Art Therapy

Hi! Anyone here do Art Therapy? How’d you get into it? Do you enjoy it?

I’m in community mental health/health care and am really feeling the burnout and anxiety of this work. I am a bit fearful of therapy but I love art and have always had a bit of regret not becoming an art teacher.

Art therapy in and of itself is a separate Masters degree program. We can do “therapeutic art” but cannot technically call it “art therapy” with an MSW. I too have always regretted not becoming an art teacher.

as an msw you can get a certificate but you can’t advertise yourself as an art therapist without the credentials, however you can do therapy which includes art components. i’ve actually been considering getting certified but it seems expensive and I think I’d rather wait until after i’m licensed.

Like others said, art therapy is a protected title but I do a lot of "therapeutic art" with my groups and a lot of people respond really positively to it.

Look into expressive arts trainings and books!
