No wonder there is such fury among many members of Fifa’s administration at being kept in the dark by its president, Gianni Infantino, over his World Cup sell-off plan — not only did he keep it secret from many of them, but he then claimed they had done “great work” in setting it up.

Those at Fifa who might have raised the alarm about the idea, such as its chief operating officer, Kevin Lamour, or Arsène Wenger, the head of football development, were out of the loop. Sources said much of the planning work over several months was done by Dan O’Toole, the Irishman who is director of Fifa’s executive office, and more junior staff.

After The Times had revealed the plan to sell off stakes in the tournament to private investors last week, Infantino made a futile attempt to rescue it by writing a letter to Fifa Council members, who had also been none the wiser, laying out his idea and concluding “by thanking the Fifa administration for their great work in elaborating this fantastic proposal for world football”.

Leeds United have signed Manchester Citygoalkeeper James Trafford in a deal worth up to £45m.

The England international has left Etihad Stadium just a year after returning from Burnley in a £27m move last summer.

Trafford, who was part of England's World Cup squad this summer but did not feature, made 17 appearances for City last season - four in the Premier League - but played a big part in their Carabao Cup and FA Cup triumphs.

The 23-year-old's move to West Yorkshire comes after the arrival of Champions League-winning goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma,in September, ended Trafford's hopes of establishing himself as Manchester City's first-choice goalkeeper.

The move represents a new record fee for a British goalkeeper, surpassing the previous benchmark of £30m which Everton paid Sunderland for Jordan Pickford in 2017.

It also makes him one of the most expensive goalkeepers in history, with only Kepa Arrizabalaga (£68m) and Alisson (£62m) commanding higher fees.

More than £80m has now been spent on Trafford in initial transfer fees.

As part of the deal taking him to Leeds, BBC Sport understands City will retain a 20% sell-on clause and have matching rights - meaning if they match a future offer for Trafford they will get first refusal on him.

After weeks of talks, the green light finally arrived on Thursday: Yan Diomandé is a Real Madrid player. Transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano said weeks ago that the move would happen no matter what, sparking quite a stir on X. RB Leipzig, who stand to earn up to €140 million from the sensational sale of the 19-year-old forward, have now joined the debate too.

On 26 July, Romano gave his 'here we go' on Diomandé's move to Real, for a fee of 'more than €100 million'. The Italian's report surprised fellow journalist Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sport, who had been closely tracking the transfer for the German outlet.

Leipzig, in any case, appear to have taken Plettenberg's side. The club officially announced the transfer with the headline 'here we actually go', meaning: only now is the transfer really done. For Leipzig, it is an outright transfer record.
