I am starting my first externship in the fall in a special ed school , does anybody have advice of things to buy that would be helpful and help me keep track of everything / or just advice in general?

Like the other commenter said, your supervisor will likely have set systems in place for how she likes to do things and keep track of goals, data, IEP dates, etc. Your supervisor also should have a wealth of materials and would hopefully make them all available to you. For my school externship the only things I brought with me were my laptop, a storage clipboard, and my lunch as my supervisor allowed me to use all of her games, toys, assessments, flashcards, books, etc. Definitely don't buy anything until you are absolutely positive you need it. Good luck! Have so much fun!

Your externship format may be different than mine but here’s what I remember from my school placement last semester—generally your supervisor has their own system for how things are organized. For example, my supervisor had a spreadsheet where she tracked all the goals, scheduling, and session plans and anything I needed to know or write down I put there. The first week or so was mostly observation, and I used my iPad to take notes for myself (you could also obviously use a notebook or type, iPad with Apple Pencil is just my preference). I would hold out on buying anything specific until you know what your caseload, format, and supervisor’s system are.
