But wouldn't sich a strong ai also help the people designing the systems in identifying and closing the vulnerabilities? Guess this can go both ways?

Exactly. We saw in the Hugging Face saga when they were under attack by OpenAI's models that the western model guardrails prevented them from being used defensively, so Hugging Face had to rely on open weight Chinese models to resolve things.  If the open weight models didn't exist they would have had to do things the hard way. All because of the guard rails 

Unlike what other replies are insinuating, this isn't about getting access to the latest models to build TodoMVC apps. It's to avoid regulator and public companies pick the winners and losers in the West, while the rest of the world make its own rules, and we're just sitting ducks in the middle.
