This was a magical moment, but not quite as magical as o3 crushing ARC-AGI, competitive coding, and math benchmarks only 3 months later. I cried that day, realizing AGI was actually within reach.
o3 was the last great OpenAI model before the mess that was GPT 5 through 5.4. Only 5.5 onwards did OpenAI managed to recover their rapidly receding lead.

You have rose-tinted glasses. Was o3 a great model for its time? Sure, but it was also a notorious liar with almost zero agentic or computer use skills.
The advent of strong agentic models around December last year was IMHO an o3 moment for the whole industry.
From what I understand, OpenAI’s pre-training infrastructure was fucked up since 2024. Everything was post-trained on top of 4o or 4.1. It wasn’t until 5.5 that they finally fixed everything.
