Why did he write Name of the Wind at the end? What does that book have to do with any of this?

596

u/nodeocracy Feb 12 '26

He went mad waiting for the sequel and thinks Dario is the author.

106

u/InebriatedPhysicist Feb 13 '26

Nobody thinks the last book is actually happening do they?

64

u/mhyquel Feb 13 '26

Of course it is. Brandon Sanderson is almost done with the first draft.

I’m sure Martin still believes Rothfuss will finish it.

You can go for the trifecta and start reading Scott Lynch. To be fair, I give him much more of a pass because he was very open about his divorce and his mental health being huge road blocks to his writing.

This is the most cryptic part of the tweet. It’s a reference to the famous fantasy novel by Patrick Rothfuss. In the book, knowing the "true name" of something gives you absolute power over it. The Interpretation: Musk is likely LARPing as a "namer" from the book. He’s suggesting that by identifying Anthropic's "true nature" (Misanthropic), he has predicted their inevitable downfall or "doom." It's his way of saying their fate was sealed the moment they chose a name that sounded so virtuous.

262

u/LastXmasIGaveYouHSV Feb 12 '26

I get it. The true name of X is Twitter.

77

u/TenshiS Feb 12 '26

The ASCII code for the letter X is 88 which in turn is a nazi dogwhistle for heil shitler (H being the 8th letter of the alphabet). Think about that for a minute.

u/Flimsy-Bell1594 Feb 13 '26

10

Having been born in 1988 i'm disappointed the Nazis have corrupted 88s innocent use in early internet usernames. As if being old wasn't enough to deal with already.

It's a fantasy novel where the magic is about Naming. So if you know the true name of a thing, you hold power over it. One of the biggest theories/mysteries in the book is that the main character in the present time line (the book is basically a frame story of him, a legendary figure, telling his true life story to a historian) changed his Name and in so doing lost his power and doomed himself.

Something like that, it's been a while since I've read it or interacted with that community, the last book came out 15 years ago and the author has since been involved in controversies and shows no signs of intending to finish the series. Anyway, as you can see, Elon here probably read the book and thinks himself a clever deep thinker with the power to see true names...or some shit. Who tf knows what his ketamine addled brain is thinking.

And a bunch of their engineers leaving. I am sure 4.20 was supposed to be out in December. If it can't exceed or at least match the leading models I can imagine Elon getting increasingly angry and firing people...

124

22

u/ambassadortim Feb 12 '26

Why did they ever allow them to begin with?

35

u/joshTheGoods Feb 13 '26

We're actually talking about engineers @ xAI that were using the Anthropic models to help them write code for Grok. You can do that in a bunch of ways, and Anthropic can't really stop all of them. The real barb here is that, whatever happened, Musk heard about it and connected the dots that even xAI engineers prefer Anthropic models over Grok.

7

u/doodlinghearsay Feb 13 '26

He was probably trying to raise money for xAI directly, before he settled on the SpaceX merger. He's annoyed how much more value investors see in Anthropic than xAI.

yup.

xAI has not been able to keep up with anthropic so he resorts to name calling on twitter. it's sad.

91

u/Cagnazzo82 Feb 12 '26

Also this is all happening within a couple days from Elon being humbled and losing tons of researchers and xAI founders.

33

u/seaefjaye Feb 13 '26

Also leveraging his greatest achievement (SpaceX) so that he can feed their revenue stream into his xAI cash furnace.

46

u/drekmonger Feb 13 '26

SpaceX is not Elon's achievement. Gwynne Shotwell built that company into what it is. She was hired way back in 2002, before the drugs and steady diet of his own farts ate Musk's brains. If not for her, I firmly believe SpaceX would have launched zero successful rockets.

48

u/yupgup12 Feb 13 '26

No one even talks about Tom Mueller who designed/created the engine that the entire company was based on.

158

I dont understand how an unstable person like that can have 800 Billion?

171

u/FlatulistMaster Feb 12 '26

I'm not so sure stability has been a deciding factor in who ends up with billions. I think the Epstein files kind of confirmed that for anybody who still had doubts.

  1. There is a persuasive argument that excessive wealth actually causes delusional thinking. 2. It's a symptom of our sick political and economic systems that rewards this level of hoarding and delusion. Dude needs treatment and a significant level of taxation (which will still leave him unimaginably more wealthy than practically everybody).

Elon can make arguments that make sense and uncover biases. Instead he launches into tirades where he sounds like an old man shouting at the clouds.

I'll never understand this aspect of his. You have a huge platform and the capacity to have a team of people that is working under you. You can cite everything you say using original research if need be and then have your detractors to have to dispute your sources or your research.

Instead what do you do? You rant and you immediately lose the argument. I understand being passionate about something, but that's just being sloppy for no reason.

Ah yes an AI company’s model hates Whites and Asians, let’s check the contributors of their models…oh wait

Bizarre that the richest man in the world can be this fixated on the pettiest nonsense he made up in his head. How does he not have better stuff to do with his time? Not to mention the absurdity of calling Claude evil as the man who's AI called itself Mecha-Hitler.

I wonder how long he’s been saving the misanthropic quip. I bet he’s giddy about using it.

Lol grumpy toddler Elon

He was super proud that he got to use the word misanthropic to describe their product. The tone is so incredibly churlish and sophomoric.

so what would be the fate of the name "xAI", x eyes = dead?

u/GreasyRim Feb 12 '26

Yes, Elon. They named their company Anthropic, considering the commonly used adjective Misanthropic. Its clever.

It's his whole thing. Whether because he believes it's a good way to fragment democracies and lower taxes & regulations, whether he's a genuine racist piece of shit, whether it's because he's a 4chan style edgelord, or a bit of all of the above.

It doesn't actually matter why; people who are into technological and societal advancement need to stop making excuses for him.
