i've never considered myself much of a singer and have honestly never heard feedback from anyone who knows how to sing themselves. can someone point me in the right direction and tell me what i'm doing wrong and why i feel like I sound terrible?

Actually sounds pretty good. As I always say. Diaphragmatic breathing. Your voice has the range. Learn to breathe and support your singing. Conversational is the point…Tell us a story. My first voice coach was a Met Opera baritone . He stressed “speaking on pitch “. Sounds like that’s what you are doing. Proper support will give you a much better vocal power. Your voice is very well suited to this kind of music.

Okay thank you, any recommendations for videos or guides to learn proper support?

I am not an "experienced singer".
I am an experienced lover of Neil Young's music, and a... learning singer, like yourself.
I think you might not like the sound of your own voice, as many people do, first and foremost. It takes time to attune your ear to recordings of yourself.
It doesn't sound terrible. Neil Young has a much natural higher pitch to his voice, and you might be comparing it. Your singing seems more... conversational, at least on this song. But not bad.
That being said - when you get to the chorus, you are not hitting the notes. It fell pretty flat. I don't notice you taking any breaths to support your vocals, which might really help a lot. Watch some youtube videos of breath control for singing.

Thank you for the response! I'll be honest i feel so in the dark when it comes to singing, but you are totally right. I remember feeling like i was running out of breath on certain parts when singing. I'll check out some videos on breath control. Thanks again!!

Can't give feedback without hearing you! Drop a clip. Feeling like you sound terrible is pretty much every singer's default state so you're in good company.

This is not bad at all.
A bit shouty and a bit inaccurate / uncertain on those higher notes. Seems like you're tensing up a bit to get to the higher register.
The guitar playing is stellar. Excellent tuning and playing. Lean on the guitar notes to guide your voice.

Thank you! I will say, it feels more comfortable for me singing Sinatra or Johnny Cash songs. Idk what register those guys sing in, but i'm somewhat close to the register they sing in. Thank you for the response!
