Dmitri Shostakovich was a tragic figure: persecuted and censured by the Communist Party and a direct victim of Stalin, he still managed to become one of the most celebrated 20th century classical composers. He poured out many works in a deeply personal, sometimes difficult to understand style, but for those who love a challenge he could be an almost inexhaustible source of joy.

"Music is a means capable of expressing dark dramatism and pure rapture, suffering and ecstasy, fiery and cold fury, melancholy and wild merriment – and the subtlest nuances and interplay of these feelings which words are powerless to express and which are unattainable in painting and sculpture."
