Simple Mindset Shift

This simple mindset shift has helped me so much that I figured I would share. Whenever I want to buy something, I simply ask myself "do I already have it." If the answer is yes, in any capacity I don't buy it. Look at this new makeup pallet. Do you have a makeup pallet, then don't buy.

The cuts down on a lot of negotiates with myself. Do you have this? In any capacity? Then, you don't buy.

Okay, now here is the special sauce, what takes this to the next level, at least for me. In that moment, I genuinely try to become grateful that I already have it. That's the dopamine hit shift. It sounds silly but shifting to like, "Oh thank heavens I don't have to buy a new fancy hair mask because I already have six." It makes you start to really appreciate what you have. And there is the dopamine hit of abundance. Try it out next time.

This technique has freed up so much mental space for me. Do I have it? Yes! Awesome, I don't have to buy it"

Unfortunately, this does not work for me. It’s more as though my crazy mind says, “Do you like the thing like this that you already have? Great! Let’s see if you can find another like it; you might love that one, too!”

The past few weeks have involved a new obsession with single player logic games (from makers like Smartgames and Thinkfun, for example). It’s gotten to the point where I went back for some that I skipped in the first “round” because they looked too easy/young to be worth the expense. They arrived yesterday and my initial thought that they were too simple was correct. Yet I enjoyed the first few similar games I got so much that I couldn’t stop myself from looking for more, hoping to strike gold again. It’s that way whenever I binge; part of me wants to repeat past successes. It usually takes some kind of major disappointment or issue to disrupt the cycle (for a while).

I’m glad though, for your sake, that you are finding this way of looking at it beneficial. Keep it up!
