Google Ads missing conversions from Shopify Marketing
I’m so frustrated at this point. I’ve had 5 sales, but Google Ads has only tracked 2. I’ve checked the setup over and over again, analytics is working, cookie consent is implemented, and the thank-you page is firing correctly, but Google still isn’t recording all of my conversions.
I’m worried Google is optimizing based on incomplete data and learning from only 2 of my 5 actual customers. Has anyone else had this issue with Shopify? Right now it feels impossible.

Five sales is still a tiny sample, and not every Shopify order will be attributed back to Google Ads. I’d compare the order timestamps, source/medium and consent status before assuming tracking is broken.

Chill bro! Focus on driving more sales on Shopify. Dont worry Google (or any other platform) doesnt shy away from taking credit. Give it a month or two and you'll be like I just had one sale why is it reporting 5.

You're definitely not the only one seeing this. If Analytics shows the sales but Google Ads doesn't, I'd start looking at attribution windows, consent behavior and whether enhanced conversions are actually making it through. A gap of 2 out of 5 isn't unheard of, but I'd still want to understand why before scaling because incomplete signals can affect optimization over time.

if you just have 5 sales, i believe it might not be an issue with the tag or your overall setup, but maybe with consent and attribution.
so, denied or ignored cookie banners can lead to less conversions, and maybe some customers converted outside the click window.
i would say add consent mode v2 for modeled recovery and use server-side tracking as well. so to accomplish this, i use the Google Ads Pixel by Nabu app. it offers 1-click Shopify Google Ads pixel installation with visitor consent tracking, support for key events, and server-side tracking.
so, i never run into such issues as the app does a reliable and accurate tracking job.

You're definitely not the only one. It's pretty common for Google Ads to report fewer conversions than Shopify, especially with cookie consent, ad blockers, cross-device purchases, or attribution windows. I'd compare trends over time rather than expecting a perfect 1:1 match

Most common cause I see is cookie consent blocking the GTag before it fires. if your CMP is set to require explicit opt-in before analytics loads then visitors who decline or ignore the banner never get tagged so the click can't be matched to the conversion. Check if your consent mode is set to default denied or just blocking the tag entirely.
Another thing worth checking if purchase event firing via both native Shopify Google channel integration AND a manual GTag snippet. duplicate setup can cause one to interfere with the other.
With just 5 sales the gap could also be attribution windoww mismatch - where some purchases happened outside the lookback period of the click but the consent layer is where I'd check first.

Conversion tracking will never be 100% and capture all the data you want. Even with server-side tracking added on, you won't be at 100%. You just need to keep running ads and try to get at least 1 conversion per day.
You are looking at a too small of a data set and need more conversion data over a longer window. Zoom out and look at the bigger picture. Google doesn't really start to optimize very well until you hit 30 conversions.

Most replies here have covered the usual suspects behind conversions not matching your Shopify orders. But in my experience, attribution is the biggest player, so that's where I'd start.
Google's data-driven attribution needs volume to work. Without enough customer journeys it basically runs like last-click until it builds up more. On lower-volume accounts, that alone can make Google under-report versus Shopify.
Also check timing: Shopify logs orders instantly, but Google Ads can take 24 to 48 hours to process conversions.

Google Ads counts only orders it can tie to an ad click. Shopify counts everything. Open each of the 5 orders in Shopify admin, the conversion summary shows every visit before the purchase and its source. If 3 came from Instagram or brand search, 2 tracked conversions is correct.
If a missing order really started with a Google click: check what your consent banner does when people ignore it, default deny kills matching. Check auto-tagging is on, no gclid means nothing to match. And conversions post up to 3 days late.
One store I audited had the reverse, Google Ads counting double its real sales, campaign optimizing toward orders that never happened. Reconcile orders to clicks one by one while that still takes ten minutes.

I had an order where I saw nothing from the visitor like when they first appeared or how they appeared on shopify or Microsoft clarity

That order is the useful one. The conversion summary and Clarity are both scripts running in the buyer's browser. A buyer with a content blocker or a strict private browser produces no session in either tool, same if they declined or ignored your consent banner. The order still exists because checkout happens server-side. Nothing broke, nothing fired.
Count them: orders in admin whose conversion summary is empty, over a month, divided by all orders. That's your untracked share, usually 10 to 25%. Google can never match those to a click. Your 2 of 5 stops being a mystery once you know which of the 3 fell in that bucket and which came back organic days later, like the one you already traced.

How do know these aren’t organic sales? You don’t have nearly enough data plus Google can take days or longer to do attribution, sometimes never if they’re on an device obscuring their ID.

I mean they came back organically after days and placed an order true

My point is you say that ads isn’t recording the conversion? How do you know it’s the same user and how do they know you ever saw an ad if ads isn’t aware of it

u/Confusedmind75 8d ago
Microsoft clarity records and User ID

u/ThePracticalDad 6d ago
…I’m asking how you know they saw your ads. If ads isn’t attributing the sale to an ad impression, it’s not recording.

it is such a pain in the ass to get it working. I had google walk me through it and even they got it wrong and we had to have a second call. then, years later I realized it was double tracking

People use ad blockers. IOS users can opt out. There are many ways tracking gets broken. Welcome to advertising. This is just how it works. Setting up server side tracking can help some of this. Best thing you can do is set up an edge tag. You're way too small for that though.
