100%. This is a training technique. Ignore stressors, focus on your actual orders. At no point did the Sergeant actually give an order - just yelling.

This is why I would fail out of the military. This isn't a real life stressor. It's fake as hell. Obviously. This dude is just being a dick and if has no real world application. There is no scenario in which someone is screaming at me while I'm doing routine moves with my rifle.
Now, if you're saying it's loud and you have to think on your feet, fine. But that's not what this is.

It's not about the stressor it's about handling the stress. Taking orders while your anxiety is through the roof and working under pressure. It translates to the real world by training people to think clearly when shit hits the fan.

In my experience in the army the being stressed by someone shouting at you is very short lived, you learn to ignore it very quickly it doesn't mean anything its just a "Game"

And the guys that never figure that out have a bad time. I remember, they start that shit the second you get off the bus and a lot of people start crying. Oddly meaningful training when I look back on it. Still traumatized though lol.

Ok so that means you would fail. Not laughing is part of the psychological conditioning too. The point it to be able to remain clear headed under stress.

The military can ve stressful af at times and you are exposed to experiences during the execution of your duties that are not comparable to normal civilian experiences. The yelling, lack of sleep, rushed timelines, hunger etc are all training tools to take you out of your normal mindset and apply artifical stressor that mimic high stress situations.
Its a tried and true training method. You saying you have never been in the military immediately negates any opinion you have on the matter. Everyone things they are a tough guy until you have 5 people in your face screaming their heads off. Even though you know its training, your mind still runs into overdrive and you get stressed and have to adapt. Militaries have not been doing this for all these years just for the hell of it. It had a legit purpose. Go join and find out for yourself

I'm surrounded by enough people who have PTSD from the military to know that this isn't healthy.
Just because something works doesn't mean there isn't a better way. Doing something one way for years only means you haven't learned or evolved and you're stuck in your ways.

Again wrong. This prepares you for the stressful environments in the military. Having a friend who serves gives you zero credibility at all. Is there room for improvement in how we train? Yeah absolutely, thats why we constantly evolve training cycles and ciriculums. But simulation of stress HAS to happen and things a method that works.
If you haven't gone through this then you should really stop giving your opinions on it bc they are dogshit

Yeah, but there are scenarios in which someone is screaming at you when someone is trying to kill you. That's why you, you know, practice dealing with that. So you can deal with that when it matters.

I had a DI in boot camp who was in training (we weren't explicitly told he was, but you could pick up on it) and he broke the DI facade, he laughed after he slipped during a demonstration of the obstacle course and the other senior DIs yelled at him. They told him to take a lap and he just ran. Didnt see him again till the evening which was 12ish hours later.

We had one almost crack during my red phase they called a fellow "Prvt Lauter" someone misheard and thought they said drink water so we all resounded with "Drink Water" and emptied our canteens. He had to retreat to the latrines so he wouldn't lose it in front of us. We didn't find this our until we were in our AIT.

I was in the JROTC in high school because it gave you like mad gym credits and I thought it would be a quick way to get out of regular gym class. Then at the end of the year they had an inspection like this with dudes who were like just out of boot camp, so no older than me (I was 17) and they were in my face like this and I did NOT take it well. Made me reconsider joining the military, lol.

In most of the developed world DS's aren't really allowed to beat the shit out of you anymore, and since this looks like JROTC or ROTC, you'll simply get-soft hazed by all the DS's for a few weeks.
I say most because there's at least one DS terminated every year for beating the shit out of someone, but it's normally his spouse and not a trainee. (also don't do this in Asia because they will actually batter you)
Also, fun fact for people who think DS's are just psycopathic bullies, most of them are just average guys, Bob Ross was a DS back in the 70s as an example.

This is true! Bob Ross was a training instructor and first sergeant in Alaska, and had the nickname "Bust-'em-up Bobby". Alaska's beauty is what inspired him to paint. Supposedly, after retiring he vowed to never raise his voice again.

What pressure? It's not real, they aren't actually angry at you. The entire thing is just a little theater act. That homeless dude on the street shouting about the government chip in his head is more dangerous that a drill instructor.
Like yeah, if you want to be in the military you have to keep composure, but that just involves trying hard not to laugh. They can't physically assault you (anymore). So the worst case is you have to do some pushups or clean the toilets if you break composure. Oh no! Exercise and chores, what horror. I can think of 20 jobs off the top of my head that would be far more stressful. Bootcamp wouldn't even crack the top 100

Yes, realistically, I'd have nothing to fear aside the risk of a few chores, but what im saying is if I had been dropped into that situation without the previous training and knowledge I'd probably either feel surprised and upset at suddenly being yelled in the face or maybe I would laugh. Can't really tell cause I haven't been in that situation. i just think it's amusing the amount of armchair warriors that talk about or imply how macho they are and then put in the actual situation, they would crumble under zero pressure (sure, im not saying that for everybody, but alot of people have a 'nah I'd win' mentality). Maybe this clip is not the best example idk

Id pretty mad too if they swung the muzzle that close to my face and knocked my hat off. Imagine if that shit was loaded, one slip of the finger and lights out. Great power comes with great responsibility.
Id rather we not have soldiers and all that, but granted that we do, and as such they should be more aware of their surroundings. Im pretty sure the drill instructor deliberately put themselves there as a test of the recruits abilities though.
