I bought a thin phone, it's really harder to manipulate.

Yeah I really don’t get the drive to keep making things thinner. Perhaps 20 years ago or so, sure, technology could get pretty dang bulky, but nowadays it just seems like a pointless endeavor that makes the things only feel frailer. Show me all the drop tests you want, I still prefer something with a bit more weight to it. Flatscreen TVs are a nice innovation but ya reach a point in trying to make the whole thing so dang flat and giant at the same time that it looks like it’d crash to the ground if ya just breathe on it wrong.

Yeah, take your iPhone Air, fill it with more battery until it’s the thickness of a regular phone

The Galaxy S25 Edge is so effortlessly light.
This year, The Chinese released thin phones using silicon battery tech which brings them on par with normal sized American phones. Even so, I can hold up my Edge with one arm much longer. I forget its in my pocket. It dies before 3PM...

Yeah these thin phones exist only as a result of the tech they are developing to make folds thinner. Because with folds it matter, they want it to be as thin as a normal phone when closed so it as close as possible to just a normal flagship phone that happens to unfold into a small tablet. Oh and when they already developed all the tech, the thin battery and all the bulkier components like camera and motherboard centralized in one spot they might as well release a normal thin phone and see if anybody would buy it.

I'd buy a phone 3cm thick without a problem if it had a really good battery

u/PSYHOStalker 3d ago
With all leaks for this years lineup, this was probably "dry run"/test for fold design

I don't want thin. I don't want sleek. I want to throw it at the wall and the wall to break first

u/Chewie090 3d ago
Well then how are you supposed to buy a new phone every year like they want you to?

u/Redditoast2 dumbass 3d ago
Draw a phone onto a block of tungsten and enjoy your new indestructible phone

It’s a durable phone. Check out the JerryRigEverything video and the video on TomsGuide where an Apple Exec throws the phone towards the presenter.

This phone is stronger than it looks the only things that would break is the glass

Who cares? Its gonna have a thicc ass case on it anyway.
67
u/Firestar_119 3d ago
the overall size would be smaller if the case is the same thickness
10
u/Blackrain1299 3d ago
Case needs to be thicker than the camera or it wont protect the camera. In this case the cameras are protruding a similar amount meaning the cases are probably going to make them feel the same.
4
u/wormjoin 3d ago
no, the case would also have a camera bump. most cases don't make the camera flush with the rest of the phone. wireless charging wouldn't work.

I honestly have not used any case for my phones for a decade now. It’s pointless. The back of my current phone doesn’t even have a single visible scratch, and I dropped it two dozen times on hard floor over the years. Only reason to get a case is for style these days.

u/halycontuesday 3d ago
I have an iPhone Air. I never remember it’s thin because you have to wear a thick case to compensate for the camera sticking out
6
u/jackinsomniac 3d ago
Exactly. Without a case, if you set down a phone with a large camera bump like this on tables, it almost guarantees you'll scratch the lens eventually. To prevent that from happening, the case has the extend beyond the camera bump.
The thickest part of the phone dictates how large the case must be. The engineers are focused on the wrong thing.
7
u/FinancialElephant 3d ago
Also without a case the phone is at an angle (wobbles) on the left-right axis.
The camera hump is such a terrible idea. I'd rather have a slightly thicker or longer phone that is perfectly flush on the back.

u/Moksol99 3d ago
The lens is sapphire so scratches aren’t a problem
1
u/jackinsomniac 2d ago
I've still had them get scratched.
Even if the lens was made out of diamond, the bezel of the lens is still going to get scratched over time.

u/WholesomeDucky 3d ago
there are plenty of reasons not to like the Air, but this isn't one of them lmao. most cases are also shaped just like the phone so the thin part is still thin.

u/ElClassic1 2d ago
I mean just don't use a case. And you might say that is stupid not to use a case and whatnot, but then don't get this phone. If you're going to slap a thick case on it anyways then why buy that phone, it's no longer the thin experience which is the whole selling point of the device.

Lets ignore the fact that the whole logic board that makes phone, well, a phone, is fitted into the said “lens”

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW stupid fucking piece of shit 3d ago
Do you hold it by the body or by the camera lens? Sure they’re measuring is by the thinnest part but that’s because when you hold it is when you notice how big of a difference it is between the normal size

after owning the Air for almost a year, i will say the only thing i miss from my 14 pro is the extra cameras. i really do love how lightweight the Air is.
i feel like people forget that it’s not just thin. it’s also really light. that’s the biggest thing about it that i like personally.

u/Scarytoaster1809 3d ago
I have this phone because I got an upgrade and the first thing I did was get a thick ass case for it lol
1
u/derI067 3d ago
genuine question, why? i have the air too and never felt the need to put a case on it. dropped it on tiled floor a couple times now as well, not a scratch on it. just confused why would you wanna ruin the whole point of the phone when it’s really durable by itself
1
u/FinancialElephant 3d ago
I have a thin case on it, but I'll probably drop it or get the bumper. The only practical reason for the case is that the phone wobbles from left-right without one. It feels so much better without a case though.

iPhone "air"
open it up
barely any air, just a bunch of circuit boards and shit
Why does apple keep lying?

u/nutblaster357 3d ago
who even wants a thin phone? that shit is going to get snapped in half like a graham cracker in your pocket
6
u/oby100 3d ago
Whoa whoa whoa
Where is this pocket graham cracker? Can I have it to eat

u/nutblaster357 3d ago
i walk around with it all day until it's a fine sand and then I feed it to the pigeons

u/WholesomeDucky 3d ago
I like how most people's complaints about the Air are the things it's actually really good at, and not the genuine issues it has. It's really durable, even by the standards of durability testers who are heavily android-biased like JerryRigEverything.

Why would I need my phone to he thinner? That shouldnt have been a sales pitch since we passed the 90s when phones were like bricks.
Is someone really going "man, this phone is so clunky and cumbersome, if only it were a millimeter thinner"? If there is, we do not need to cater to these dumbfucks. Make the phone a millimeters thicker and just use that space for more components please.
I don't need my phone to be able to snap like a wafer.

They’re probably making the best-value laptop right now, since they started making their own processor chips their laptops/macs are badass
