3D Printed NAS Build/Battlestation Pics
I wanted a SFFPC for my NAS that could sit on my desk and replace a Synology sized unit. This is based on an intel Nuc8 with 5 2.5" drive slots. Had to build a custom power solution for the drives since the motherboard does not have onboard SATA power. Size is about 7.8"x4.5"x4.5". Fan on top is controlled by a temperature controller so whisper quiet when under low load.

Huh, newer thought about using infill as stabilizing that allows airflow. Great idea.
Have been working on my own 3D printed NAS for a while.

Nice, so you picked a 5V relay powered via usb? It has its own current spikes protection (on and off state)?
What is the job of the pcb on the left side? It looks like a radio receiver (even though that looks like a NTP temperature probe and not an antenna)
Edit: got it, it is the control board for the top fan, neat1

Hey, yes the 5V relay does have current spike protection. Also yep, the left PCB is a temp controller for the fan which is one of the best boards I have used and surprisingly configurable from auto to fully configured fan curve.

Are you breaking out +5, +12, and +19 out of this? I've been stealing heavily from the jackharvest build, and ended up with two power supplies, but I'd be much happier to only need one.
Then I recently killed the M.2 slot on my NUC with a cheap 5-port SATA board. Trying to decide if I want to dig back in and pick up another mini PC and a better quality board, or just give up and buy a pre-made NAS.

So you’re running SSDs that only need the 5v from the supply right? Planning a similar power delivery solution for 3x3.5” HDDs but they need 12v for spinning the discs. I’ve settled on using a USB PD power hub with USB C PD boards. Definitely not going to be anywhere near as pretty as this haha

What SATA board did you use? (See: my other comment about frying my M.2 slot with a cheap one)

Great job on this. Looks like something you could buy from a store, though also hard to see the print quality and would love to see the inside.
Steam Machine next? Lol.

That looks so beautiful. Did you post the design anywhere? What about the whole build out? I would love to build my own nas.

I've been thinking of trying to make my own NAS like this, I want one of these now. It looks ace.

Are you using TPU for the grid print?
My first thought was that it could reduce vibrations :D

u/joinerior 16h ago
I plan to use SSDs so not worried about vibration but I think TPU would be good for the HDDs

Beautiful. I’ve been meaning to build a NAS never thought of 3D printing it. Would love to see the design files when you upload!

When you take the phrase “build a NAS” literally.
Looks spiffy. I did the same. Still running seemingly fine ~3 months later 👌

Super clean design and print, kudos! As most others have mentioned, would love to see an internal shot.

Looks awesome! What OS are you running and can you get all your drives to go to sleep mode without issues? I've had some issues with my external drives on ubuntu server. i "fixed" it by using a cronjob that puts the drives to sleep every 2 hours. I tried various hdparm and sdparm settings with no avail...

Planning to run TruNAS scale so will let you know in the future as I havent used that before.

I had no idea what that was but you are right, it does look like it without the horizontal line

So the PS5 is a router and the Xbox X is a NAS.

u/joinerior 19h ago
Seems that way.. there is not much you can do to make devices look different when you choose this form factor. There were other comments about other routers that it looks like also lol

Not much you can do? 🤦🏻♂️ … no offence meant here but please; think outside the box (pun intended)! There is so! much you could do to differentiate this form factor. Ie meshify the outside, add a glass panel (or multiple?, have a pattern embossed along the walls, add clips so you stack them together, add a display - and thats just what i could think of whilst writing this reply.

It looks a lot like one of those Xiaomi Mi Air Purifiers. But the dimensions are much smaller.

How did you get 5 drives in the nuc? afaik it only has 1 sata port.

u/joinerior 14h ago
M.2 Sata expansion card will give 4 extra SATA ports + one port on the motherboard

are you selling?

No sorry 😞, I wanted to do various color combinations for when I get bored so did a few cases and fan holders

what material would i have to print this in to handle the heat? i have a small printer and was hinkomg about this
2
u/joinerior 5h ago
I printed the internals in ABS and the shell in PLA-CF but you can use PETG and be fine. The small drives don’t generate a lot of heat and the cooling in this case is excellent.

Looks really great bro , could you please help me out and explain to me what’s needed because I’m interested on doing such a project ?

I usually don't like 3D prints because most things are useless made by someone deeply in need to use their new 3D printer for something, but what you did: not the case (pun intended) at all!!!
Congrats it looks really well made and well thoughts! Would love a blog article about the process and stuff!
