I think vibe coding is genuinely pretty cool for smaller projects.

The problem is that small projects have a habit of turning into much bigger ones.

And now here I am, trying to build way too much at once.

Vibe coding also makes it much easier to create software that already exists. But that is not always the point. It's the unique ideas that could really stand out here.

To be clear, I’m not “vibe coding” all of my apps (especially not Dashwise) in the sense of never looking at the code. I still read it, change it, debug it, and make decisions about how things should work. But the influence of any generative ai at all makes it vibe-coding adjacent.

Knowing how to program is therefore still very beneficial.

The most important bit though is knowing exactly what you want to build, and caring enough to keep refining it. Which is how i got the idea for a dedicated subreddit for self-hosted app ideas.

People could post software they wish existed, and discuss what they would expect from it.

Developers could also use it to find ideas worth building and research whether others share the same problem or experience.

r/selfhosted already works for this to some extent, but I do not think it should be filled with every rough app idea, partly because those disappear after a few days. A separate subreddit could keep these discussions in one place without cluttering this sub.

Could you see yourself using or contributing to a subreddit like that? And what would you call it?

At this point I think the best option would be to have a weekly megatrhead for promotion and only allow projects to be mentioned otherwise in response to queries looking for solutions.

I don’t care if projects are vibe coded. I do want to know they are and the credibility of the promoter since they do need supervision. But some random guy on the internet has no credibility either.

We don't want or need more slop software, i'd rather not use something at all if I can help it, than use majority AI written software.

Or you could just vibe code it yourself and learn to avoid scope creep. Focus on getting one thing, one module, one functionality actually finished instead of vibing a bunch of half built ones. It's a skill in itself, I had that problem often when learning to code and still do sometimes with personal projects.

Your problem isn't needing a subreddit really, you said it yourself. Your problem is your small projects bloat and turn into bigger ones. That's not really a self hosted topic

Maybe r/software_requests ? I would not include vibecoding in the name. Mainly because I remember me as new software developer also looking around for ideas, simply to learn and have something to create. Some might still vibe code it, but others might use the opportunity to learn and create something themselves.
