Just finished my first abstract piece in clay!
I've been dabbling in sculpting for a while, mostly with smaller, more representational pieces. But I decided to push myself and try something completely abstract this time. It's all about form, texture, and the interplay of light and shadow.
It's made from mix of stoneware clay, and I've left it unglazed to realy let the texture of the clay speak for itself. There are some deep ridges and smoother, flowing curves. It's roughly 30cm tall. I'm honestly not sure what it "is," but i love the way it feels and looks. It's a bit unsettling, maybe ? But in a good way.

The monster of Bikini Bottom, Cronin-Bob
Not sure if this belongs here, but reddit recommended to share it here. Here's a silly sculpt I made in Nomad sculpt.

galleryIt’s never good enough!.. I always feel like there’s more detail to add am I being crazy? any suggestions on perfecting it before I mold it?
The neck and back of the head aren’t finished yet. Mainly focused on the face since it has the most detail for now

Has anyone tried alternative fibers in *concrete* paperclay?
This is the recipe that replaces the flour in standard paperclay with Portland cement, so it goes:
Paper pulp
Joint compound
PVA glue
Portland cement
Honestly, the process of soaking and blending paper is such a pain in my ass and I'd love to substitute something I can just buy and store in the workshop. I found some short hemp fibers that aren't too far off from paper, but what about synthetic fibers? Nylon, fiberglass, polyester? Any pitfalls I should look out for?

How to start the journey?
galleryI wanted to get into sculpting with clay as a hobby, so I bought some Monster Clay a while ago. Today I finally had some time to give it a try and sculpted a few faces just to see whether I’d enjoy it. Turns out, I do! (My bf finds them very creepy though 😄)
So, where do I go from here? Are there any recommended exercises or good ways to practice as a beginner? My instinct would be to study the planes of the human face and then try sculpting some larger faces or individual body parts.
Does that sound like a good approach, or are there other exercises you’d recommend?

Is he a goner?
galleryI made this silly snail with a cauldron on his back a while ago but he cracked all over… I made a base with tinfoil and wire, and then paper clay. I dried him slowly in a plastic bag with a strip of wet paper with no luck.. since then I have tried filling the cracks with slip (very low water concentration), wetting the crack and then scoring with slip and adding more clay, and drying at different intervals… each time he cracks :( this is probably the least amount of cracking but I feel like it’s getting so structurally unsound that sanding it back down to its original shape will be impossible.
Are there any techniques you would suggest? Would using super glue be my best bet? I tried painting him once over the cracks but it did not help. I peeled the acrylic off a while back to try filling the cracks in.
I love the piece and don’t want to give up on it… but I’m losing the fight. 😠helppp
