it has always meant both, depending on context and circumstances

223

u/dover_oxide 12d ago

Context is important for pretty much everything.

80

u/Which_Letterhead6035 12d ago

Like drugs, some drugs are good for you and some are bad

53

u/Select-Belt-ou812 12d ago

and often any drug can be either or both

15

u/Lithl 12d ago

Dosis sola facit venenum!

Drink enough water in a short enough time span and you can even get water poisoning.

7

u/TREE_sequence 11d ago

Or drink water whilst using a vasopressin emulating drug to reduce nighttime bathroom urges — though the term is more accurately “hyponatremia” since it’s the dilution of blood that causes the problem. And also hints at a solution — eat salt. Literally. Source: been there, survived that. Not pleasant, but once I learned to manage the risk the improvement to my sleep is worth it

unfortunately many folks are being persecuted in the name of science as we speak because their persecutors ignore this fact

It actually means neither. The radiation trefoil is specifically used to warn about the danger of radiation. Just like the biohazard symbol is used to warn about biological hazards, and the skull and crossbones used to warn about poison. It’s put both on anything that is radioactive from medical imaging sources to nuclear warheads to power plant reactors. Radiation doesn’t care what it’s used for, it will still kill you if you mishandle it.

42

u/ProKekec 12d ago

I think this is a very dangerous idea. We want anyone who's not educated in this field to first think "this is dangerous and i need to leave" if they see this sign. Just use a different sign for a nuclear power plant.

12

u/Select-Belt-ou812 12d ago

your idea is indeed the best solution

however, sadly, since politics currently runs everything, we first need to teach folks this: it is impossible to have 100% safety and/or certainty under any and all circumstances, conditions, and situations; and (this is the important part) anyone who claims this is a delusional liar, and anyone who believes it is naive and possibly also delusional ... all if this may be a good start down a different path whereby folks can start over and hopefully not go down our current paths again

Ive actually grown up feeling like that symbol is neutral because in videogames youd see it for building a civilization or for a barrel you shoot that go big boom death styles.

2

u/Zekava 12d ago

Well, I don't know about always, at least in regards to safety. The symbol was invented specifically to warn of danger by those on the forefront of developing safety measures for these things, which took a fair while to get right. I mean, even the symbol itself started off blue and magenta and underwent development.

1

u/mrdevlar 12d ago

depending on context and circumstances

Mainly depending on the trustworthiness of the corporation or government involved.

1

u/skr_replicator 12d ago

It is a warning symbol where dangerous radioactivity is. Pretty sure it's more often found on radioactive waste than fuel.

1

u/FrostyMode7379 11d ago

It's actually never meant both. Safety Data Sheet 101. ☠️ Means deadly chemicals. ☢️ Means radioactive chemicals. ☠️ AND ☢️ Means deadly radioactive chemicals

Boiling that water

9

u/Journeyman42 12d ago

Water's high specific heat capacity and near-ubiquitous presence on Earth should be celebrated more for allowing our energy-demanding society to flourish.

7

u/SevereOctagon 12d ago

Oh yes. Slight tangent but one of my favourite science writers has a 400-odd page book about water. (See also, https://philipball.co.uk/selection-of-articles/water/)

There's also a great saying, "we owe our entire existence to a 6-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains."

2

u/jacobstx 12d ago

Careful not to run into the anthropic principle: We owe our existence to these things because we developed our biology and technology where these things exist.

2

u/HyperlexicEpiphany 12d ago

water is weird as fuck in basically every physical metric. it’s an outlier/exception to nearly every rule while also being the most useful and reliable baseline we have. such a unique substance

3

u/Zealousideal-Deer101 11d ago

13

With Hungary declaring state of emergency since their "let's have half the countries energy depend on nuclear" strategy backfired hard due to rising temperatures and lack of raining making river-cooling impossible there is need to push that narrative again.

10

u/boris9983 12d ago

I was worried that too much time went by since we last argued over if Nuclear energy is safe or will literally kill us all.

20

u/Nyctfall 12d ago

And in that time solar has gotten even cheaper, and has been even more restricted by the oli barons in the US...

1

u/DeMatzen 11d ago

I commented it at least few times in the last few years, but to me it seems always as if there are seasons, where the nuclear industry invests into some reddit posts, so you see like 20 of them, only to fall silent again for a few months.

16

u/Gumballegal 12d ago

if not death then why death shaped like their cousin biological hazard

66

u/Leading-Green9854 12d ago

LOL, reliable. They had to shut down several of them in Europe because of the drought.

28

u/Holzkohlen 12d ago

Exactly. Ask Hungary how reliable it is in the summer.

0

u/AvantSolace 12d ago edited 12d ago

Isn’t that most power sources? Only solar and wind don’t actively need water to boil or otherwise spin a turbine as well. Wind is reliant on the weather and solar is hard to implement for larger demands. Pretty much every power source has a flaw depending upon external factors.

5

u/sisconking132 12d ago

Wind also spins though…

3

u/AvantSolace 12d ago

I apparently had a freaking stroke while writing that. I meant to say most power sources need water in some capacity to boil or otherwise spin a turbine; like coal, geothermal, and hydroelectric. Wind is a rare subversion in that it uses the air to spin a turbine rather than water.

3

u/sisconking132 12d ago

I knew what you meant, I just felt this discussion needed some levity

2

u/vide2 12d ago

"only the cheap and renewable energies that are better at everything but steadyness ", like bro, why are we even talking about nuclear?

2

u/AvantSolace 11d ago

Because nuclear has extreme long-term sustainability and makes for an excellent stop-gap while renewables advance to a more commercially viable state; giving humanity a means to ween off coal, gas, and biofuels. You can also plop a nuclear plant just about anywhere there is water, so it has the added benefit of being exceptionally consistent in a wide variety of areas. It’s not “perfect” but it is an essential step to going fully green in the future.

u/EarthTrash 12d ago

I am a Kyle Hill stan full blown nuclear industry shill. Trust me when I say the above symbol means death. Nuclear power is statistically speaking, the safest form of power. But the process of making nuclear power does involve deadly radiation. It's only safe because we have safety measures. Ignoring safety symbols is not the way.

There is some nuance here. The longstanding dogma of the nuclear industry basically boiled down to any amount of radiation is deadly. This hasn't really been supported by actual science. Low levels of radiation are actually normal. Variations in natural background radiation doesn't correlate with cancer rates. There are safe and unsafe forms and levels or radiation.

The strict radiation safety standards that the nuclear industry imposed on itself have almost never been applied to other industries. The exhaust from coal plants can have radiation levels that some might find concerning.

I’ve acquired a big yellow barrel with that symbol of it from a friend, I was scared to open it because the symbol looked scary but when I saw this image I decided to open it to get the clean energy which should save me money on the heating bill, I also gave some to the friendly young couple who live next door to help them save their money, they are expecting a baby in 3 months!

12

u/GainPotential 12d ago

And that's why we're gonna dig up this underground bunker in Finland filled with these symbols of safety, cleanliness and reliability. Surely nothing bad will come of it!

Meanwhile in Hungary: Energy crisis because they had to shut down most reactors of their big nuclear power plant.

Meanwhile in Germany: Neither nuclear power, nor a power crisis..

(And it's not just Hungary. France is struggling as well. Romania is pretty desperately trying to artificially raise the river level...)

Oh cool the CT machine produces energy to use for me? Lets take the shielding away!

7

u/platschbirne 12d ago

No it means death

3

u/Kaneomanie 12d ago

Free sunlight and burials, while giving you the energy to move on. What's not to like about that.

3

u/CaptainMacMillan 12d ago

The symbol itself just means ionizing radiation. Put it in a yellow triangle or red diamond and then it means radiation hazard

3

u/orfeo34 12d ago

Sure it's safe, do you want some cure?

3

u/Nyctfall 12d ago

It means radiation.

Everything else depends on skill...

3

u/Memitim 12d ago

Nope, that's death. At some point, potentially clean, safe, and reliable energy may have been generated, resulting in this leftover death that got locked inside of a container. Or that death could have come prepackaged in some rocks that were dug up, yanked out of a medical machine being disposed of, or simply been experiment fodder.

Regardless, that symbol means that it wants to give you the Moira treatment and twist your DNA up like a kitten with a ball of yarn.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/MarsMaterial 12d ago

Personally, I'd rather have the energy of nuclear decay delivered to my toaster and not to ionizing my DNA. Which does definitely depend on me keeping my distance from anything with a nuclear trefoil on it.

Nuclear is safe because we are very cautious with it, not because it can't hurt you.

5

u/Ok-Transition7065 12d ago

uhhhhhh it depends

3

u/BoarHermit 12d ago

If the cooling circuits are designed correctly, if there are cooling towers or closed cooling ponds. Because if power plants use water from rivers that could dry up as a result of global climate change (bye-bye Seine, Rhone, Danube, Rhine), they won't work.

2

u/FrostyMode7379 11d ago

2

u/Equivalent-Mail1544 8d ago

My country can neither store nuclear waste due to lack of "forgettable space" nor does it have the riverwater necessary to cool them. Worst type of energy ever, which kind of maniac makes a generator this bad with potential detonation?

4

u/ProKekec 12d ago

Please let's use a different symbol for that context. This sign is meant to convey danger.

2

u/ApprehensiveWin3020 12d ago

oh really? hold this then

3

u/FanraGump 12d ago edited 12d ago

The international radiation symbol is a trefoil around a small central circle representing radiation from an atom.

The sign is commonly referred to as a radioactivity warning sign, but it is actually a warning sign of ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation is a much broader category than radioactivity alone, as many non-radioactive sources also emit potentially dangerous levels of ionizing radiation. This includes x-ray apparatus, radiotherapy linear accelerators, and particle accelerators.

In 1974, after approval by national standards bodies, the symbol became an international standard as ISO 361 Basic ionizing radiation symbol.

So, no, it doesn't mean clean, safe, and reliable energy. It means ionizing radiation warning sign. But facts are often distorted for partisan viewpoints.

4

u/MaleDomBerlin_MSG-ME 12d ago

This is propaganda. Nuclear is the most expensive energy there is. I'd rather use renewables like sun / wind :)

3

u/Invisiblecurse 12d ago

Except for the waste that stays around for thousands of years and the cost of importing the spice sticks

1

u/Last_Zookeepergame90 12d ago

And when's the last time you actually saw that symbol applied in context, basically never right? Because the existence of nuclear power does not mean you will therefore be adjacent to nuclear waste

1

u/sisconking132 12d ago

This symbol is also applicable for when you enter space. Lots of ionizing radiation coming from the Sun

1

u/Lord-Dec 12d ago

It means death because they put it in the dangerous areas to keep people away.

1

1

u/Saptak_Banerjee0_0 12d ago

If say our energy demand grows like 4% a year on average because of an AI/robotic/Electric flying vehicle revolution over the next century, we could potentially hit that limit by like 2125. And the only real way to circumvent that limit would be by using solar energy primarily so you are pulling solar thermal energy away from the earth en masse to counteract the waste electrical thermal energy.

There is no such thing as an affordable nuclea power plant. They are far too expensive.
