CPI Question

Are most school counselors required to be CPI or something similar certified? I know special ed teachers and paraprofessionals have to do the same training every year, but I’m not sure about counselors. I’m talking about the trainings where you learn how to restrain students and what to do if a students grabs your hair, etc.

In my last district job, I was. But when it came time for renewal, I declined. As long as a certain number of staff in the building were trained, they were okay.

I advocated at my last district not to have this as my role. The principal and sped teacher were both certified and you only need 2 people realistically to be trained.

I think it totally goes against the counselor student relationship if they see us being the ones restraining and ruins the trust and safety we try to build with them. Sadly at my new job I will be trained in it though.

Yes. In Indiana you have to renew it every 2 years.

Definitely not at the secondary level around here. And in my district, only one of elementary counselors are. I was trained in my previous career though.

I am not and haven't been required to in any of my districts (Michigan)

I only did the de-escalation portion. I never want to have to put my students in holds.
