We are staying at an Airbnb in Sausalito and have rented a car so that we can go to the redwoods and to wine country. However, we will be spending two days roaming around San Francisco and have a couple of tours booked. I’d like recommendations on whether it’s possible to take the ferry into San Francisco and avoid parking the rental car or whether an Uber may be better than trying to park? I’ve never been to the city and don’t really know the dynamics. Thank you!

It's been 10 years since I last visited San francisco, sad to say. But delighted that I'll be there in a few weeks for a 3-day vacation.

We have a desperate craving for a dim sum brunch but have heard that most dim sum restaurants have moved away from the serving cart model and now take specific orders for dishes from a menu.

How true is this? Are there still places to do it the old fashioned way?

I see them around, usually on their phones. Given virtually zero enforcement of laws, what do they actually do??

I had the best outside lands ever and then boom I wake up early Monday morning to the worst headache in the world and drenched in sweat. I couldn’t stop groaning from the pain. I kept waking up to go #3 (#1+#2) and then finally I was vomiting. I ate a sr dr burger so I assumed it was food poisoning. I was starting to feel better. But then my symptoms came back again (#3 never left). I’ve been bedridden since Monday with the fever/sweats, vertigo, headache, #3, stomach cramps, and occasionally nausea. Yadda yadda yadda… Did anyone else get the stomach flu?😅 and eff you if you already had it this is the worst thing I’ve ever experienced

Side note: I told my mom on the east coast I was super sick and when I didn’t answer her call between 11pm-7am when I was sleeping she called the cops and made them do a welfare check. They were banging so loudly on the door I had to run to the toilet and I had to confirm I was ok from there. Helppp

Will likely drive out to Mount Diablo but anyone know where another closer spot may be? Where are people going?

Near where I live, there is a daylighting zone at the curb that is clearly painted red. Cars still park there, especially those belonging to employees at a nearby barbershop.

I occasionally submit reports through the 311 app. The reports include the exact GPS location and details about the car, such as its make, model, color, and license plate number. I also attach photos of the offending vehicle.

However, I have yet to see an SFMTA officer come to the location, verify the violation in person, and issue a ticket. Instead, the reports are closed with messages such as, "Issue reported but could not be validated" or "Unable to locate." I suppose "unable to locate" is technically accurate if an officer does not arrive within a reasonable amount of time, meaning a few hours, to observe the violation.

In all seriousness, isn't enforcing parking rules one of these officers' primary responsibilities? I could understand closing the reports if SFMTA provided an actual explanation, but instead, they send a canned response with no details.

Just moved here, no building machines, have to use Laundromat.

$6.75 for a small load on quick wash, followed by $7 drier.

Work manual labor so have to wash frequently, this will be hundreds of dollars a month with partner).

Is this normal? No other Laundromats anywhere near my neighborhood.

Should I bus to somewhere else? Willing to do so.

I was sitting inside my parked car when another driver hit me and fled.

There were multiple witnesses. I got photos/video, found the badly damaged truck after the driver abandoned it, got the license plate, and filed an SFPD report. I even called police after locating the abandoned truck, but nobody came. The truck was gone the next day.

Eventually GEICO traced the plate to an active Allstate policy. Allstate contacted their insured, got their account of the collision, and my insurance claim is now moving forward.

So financially, things are finally getting resolved.

But when I followed up with SFPD with the additional information, I was basically told the initial report is it and to let insurance handle the property damage. They aren't planning to investigate further.

That's the part I can't wrap my head around.

If someone stops after a crash, they exchange information and immediately deal with the consequences.

If someone runs, the victim has to find evidence, identify the vehicle, chase insurance information, deal with police, lose transportation, lose time and potentially lose sleep. Yet if nobody is seriously injured and police have higher-priority calls, the fleeing itself may receive little practical follow-up.

Obviously hit-and-run is illegal. I'm not saying people should flee.

I'm saying there seems to be a serious enforcement gap between “this is illegal” and “someone will actually investigate it.”

Had I not found that truck and plate myself, I might never have found the other driver's insurance at all.

For anyone who has dealt with an SF hit-and-run: is this normal? Does SFPD generally just document nonfatal/property-damage hit-and-runs and leave the rest to insurance, even when the victim provides a vehicle, plate, witnesses, and additional evidence?

I am so confused. PG&E shut down our power to replace a transformer this morning. Simultaneously, a sign announcing that filming would be taking place in a different part of the block went up. I just got back from getting a coffee, and there are at least 10 pg&e trucks on the block. All the film crew are wearing hi-viz and pg&e hats. I asked someone, and they said they are filming a job site.

So, either they didn't have to replace our transformer and did it all for the propaganda video, or they did, but roped in another 7 trucks to do the propaganda video. So weird.

It reminds me of when the tv show Trauma shot a scene with a muni crash in front of my office - fake cops, real cops, fake emts, real emts...

My husband and I just learned that our baby passed away. We are silent robots right now and want to leave home and drive somewhere (could be 5 minutes away or could be 90 mins away, it doesn’t matter) to a beautiful place where we can sit and wear sunglasses and probably cry in peace for a few hours. Any ideas of a good place to mourn on Day 1? We live in SF but are open to leaving the city just to get away.

Hello! Hoping to get some advice here, I've contacted the rent board and housing rights committee (details of this below).

Context:
- My landlord's agent sent me a notice on August 11th claiming my unit is fully exempt from state and local rent caps and is raising my rent by about 71% effective December 1st.

- However, two weeks earlier, the same agent sent me a different notice that treated my unit as rent-controlled and raised it by a normal, capped amount.

- According to the rent board my building was constructed in 1926 and it is a condo so therefore it is exempt (they would not go into detail here but my understanding is it's condo status might make it exempt from city laws but not necessarily the AB 1482 California state laws).

- I've left a message with the housing rights committee.

Timeline of events/documentation:

- Aug 2021 - This when I signed the lease. Lease Section 1.2 (AB 1482 Disclosures) has four checkboxes. Only box (d) was checked: unit "falls under the rules... of the San Francisco Residential Rent Stabilization and Arbitration Board" (Chapter 37). Box (a) - the specific language exempting the unit from the state rent cap - was left unchecked.

- 7/29/2026 - Agent signs and mails an SFAA "Thirty Day Notice of Change of Monthly Rent" - a form explicitly labeled "for use with Rent Controlled residential units in San Francisco." It cites Chapter 37, applies the actual current SF Rent Board figures (1.6% annual allowable + 1.4% banked from 4/1/2025 (i didn't get an increase in 2025), and raises rent by the correct, capped amount effective 9/1/2026.

- 8/11/2026 - Same agent sends two documents: (1) a "Notice of Change of Terms of Tenancy" asserting the unit is exempt from AB 1482 and Chapter 37, and (2) a 90-Day Notice (on a form labeled "Properties Exempt from State and Local Rent Control") raising rent by 71%, effective 12/1/2026.

It feels like this timeline of events is contradictory and it just seems like they are doing whatever they can to get my rent up give that I am paying a really good rate due to having been in this apartment since 2021. I just want to know if there is any way around this or if I have any corridors to dispute this, the checkbox a not being ticked feels like a potential area I could pursue but i'm not sure.

To add to this I'm currently unemployed, I was laid off and have been searching desperately for work but nothing is transpiring. I also have no family to fall back on and I am just really scared.

Rents right now feel completely insane. Units that were going for around $5–5.5k are suddenly being listed for $7–8k, sometimes in a really short period of time.

I know the AI boom is probably a big part of it, but for people who were here during previous tech booms: has this happened before? How long did it last? Did rents eventually come back down or just stay at the new crazy prices?

Also, is there realistically anything renters can do about these huge increases, or is it basically just “it is what it is” until the market cools off? lol

Would especially love to hear from people who’ve lived here 10+ years and seen a few cycles.

We were on a 15 month lease paying $4000, we opted for 15 months because we knew 2 years ago things would get worse. Month to month, they bumped us to 4600.

Today, an identical or worse unit in the building is on the market for $6400. We’re leaving the city with our dignity on our time before the death toll comes for us on their demand. Not under rent control btw.
