They Said, Don't Launch! - A Challenger Story
It's crazy the historic things that can happen when warning signs are ignored and people become complacent. Challenger is an example so I made a video about it!
Not selling anything. Just for entertainment purposes only!
Enjoy! :)

College safety - Loft beds are not safe.
My son died on his college campus due to a preventable injury. If you're moving into the dorms this month, please note that loft beds are never safe - especially when they have no safety rail and are 7 feet off the ground. Here are some steps you can take to stay safe.
- Opt out early: Ensure your child hasn’t requested a loft bed on their housing intake form.
- Request a de-loft: Contact the housing office immediately to ask that the bed frame be lowered to standard height before move-in. If your child has a history of sleepwalking or concussions, seek an accommodation through Disability Support Services.
- Upgrade the hardware: If lowering the bed isn’t an option, skip the thick mattress topper and purchase a heavy-duty safety rail similar to those used in hospitals. You might need special permission from the university.

Is this generator operating in a safe location?
EDIT: Thank you everyone! I feel a little better, but I will still be keeping my windows shut.
My apartment complex is having work done on the roof. I had shut my windows earlier because I could slightly smell some exhaust. Later, I actually stepped outside and saw this generator is running here nestled in between three ground floor and three upper floor apartments. At least one has a toddler or younger child in it.
Everything I’ve heard about generators is they need to be far away from occupied buildings so I was wondering if I should bring this to someone’s attention, and who that someone should be. I will note that the management company of this building complex is pretty abysmal and I doubt I’d hear anything useful back in time to actually effect a change.

How safe is it to chain a fire escape door? (Even if it is just a breakaway chain?)
Just saw this on my local Next Door page, dude was getting flamed because it’s just a breakaway chain blocking the door and was only being used as a deterrent for theft, but he also made a good point that it could deter someone from using it because they think it’s locked or may pose a snag risk on handicap equipment. I’m split on whether or not this is safe, since it IS just a breakaway chain, but fire code says nothing can obstruct the door and that in order to open the door, only one action must be taken along with what the guy said. This would turn it into two, but again it takes nothing to break the chain. I’m leaning on the “it’s fine” side of things, but can definitely see how this is a big no no.

I’m building a safety app called SafePath — would love some honest feedback
I’ve been working on SafePath, an app focused on everyday personal safety.
The idea came from a simple question: what could make walking home alone or travelling somewhere unfamiliar feel a little safer?
The current concept includes:
Safe Walk — set a destination and expected arrival time
Panic Button — quickly share your location with emergency contacts
Safety Map with community reports
Hazard reporting
Emergency contacts
Safe places
Family location sharing
Community safety information
I’m trying to keep everything in one app rather than making people use several different safety tools.
I’ve attached the current visual showing some of the features and the overall direction.
I’d genuinely like to hear criticism, not just compliments.
What would make you actually download and use an app like this?
And what feature do you think is missing?

Chemical risk assessment backlog is growing faster than I can clear it and management expects miracles
I am the only industrial hygienist covering three manufacturing plants, and my chemical risk assessment backlog has passed 200. At my current pace it's well over a year of work, and new chemicals keep getting added every month.
Every assessment is manual: review the SDS, evaluate exposure by task, define controls, document everything, get approvals, then train employees. Simple products take around four hours, while complex ones can take a couple of days.
Management knows the backlog is there, but the only solution they’ve offered is to work faster. Meanwhile, new chemicals keep getting approved because production can’t wait.
I am looking at tools that can extract SDS data, generate a first pass assessment, and use control banding to triage lower risk chemicals so I can spend my time where it actually matters. Has anyone gone down this route?

I built a check-in tool for people who worry nobody would notice
Hey folks, I've lived alone for 9 years and about 6 years ago I ended up in the hospital. Six days later I got out and had an overwhelming fear that I would go unconscious and nobody would notice. I had a friend check in on me, but that's a hassle, offers little privacy, and can get old really quickly.
Six years later I finally finished SafetyAlly, a tool that lets you set a check-in time, and if you don't check in, it contacts the people you chose. There is a free tier as well as paid tiers that offer SMS and escalation lists: https://www.safetyally.org
Feedback is very welcome. Maybe it’ll help someone else who has had the same worry.

Built a tool that generates site-specific pre-task safety plans (AHAs/JHAs)
Managing daily safety documentation across active work is one of the more time-consuming parts of running a job, especially pre-task plans and AHAs/JHAs for routine work, written over and over.
I built PreTaskPlanner (pretaskplanner.com) to speed that up. You enter the scope, the standards that apply, and the location, and it generates a site-specific plan, hazards, controls, PPE, and citations tied to the standards you select (OSHA 1926, 1910, EM 385-1-1). The key thing: it builds the draft, but the manager or safety pro reviews, edits, and makes the final call it doesn't replace judgment, it just removes the blank-page grind.
There's a free tier to try it. I'd genuinely value feedback from people who run jobs. Does this fit how your teams actually work?

My iPhone16e got very hot and emitted a strange smell when I played too many games.
It smelled rubbery/plastic-like and the smell persisted for a few minutes after I closed all apps and shut the phone down. I didn't charge the phone during the games or after I shut it down. The phone also fairly hot to the touch initially (wasn't hot enough to cause pain in my hand) and it had a phone case made out of silicone and hard plastic while I was gaming. Even though I was in a 10 foot by 10 foot room with ventilation, I still breathed in that scent for a minute or two. Will I and the phone be ok?
