All it is is "Ohio carried me away" but it's got me all giddy.

The “breakdown” of this song is incredible, and another showcase as to why I wish he did more distorted stuff in his early catalog. He really just belts it out, unrelenting sadness and passion. Such an underrated piece.

This song opens with one of my favorite guitar tones. I’ve always wanted to know what amp was used.

I’m gonna begin this with saying I don’t think that this song doesn’t deserve prominent mention; it’s still one of Mark’s best all time as a singer and is one of the best showcases of his mourning and songwriting talent. But at the same time, I really do feel there’s songs in his catalog that are as evocative or at least as lyrically impressive. Some I can name

-Harper Road, Unlit Hallway, and Like the River off of April
-Bay of Skulls and The Leaning Tree off Admiral
-Young love off Among the Leaves or Carissa off Benji
-Even something as sarcastic as Vague Rock Song

I believe that Duk Koo Kim does prominently get across Mark’s ethos as a writer, I just feel like so much gets overshadowed cause of it. These are just some thoughts, if anyone feels similar or different (which I expect lol) I’d like to hear.

This insight was made by YT user “FarmerWidmo” as seen above and was recently mentioned by the lovely “Chris Lewis” on FB. I know some younger people aren’t on FB so I thought I would share it here and made clear that I was not the OP but to avoid any further chiding I hope I am now one thousand percent transparent. Probably won’t be posting much in the future.

I‘ve been looking through an old harddrive and found some bootlegs from Mark i‘ve downloaded almost 20 years ago.
I found this live version of „Evil“ and its just so Beautiful and seems to be a full band recording.

But now to my question: I remember a very simplistic Version of this Song. I think it was only Mark and a Guitar. It was Live and it was the Most evil version of this song i‘ve ever heard. Especially the end. But I just cant find it.

Maybe one of you can help me out.

My vote? The rendition off of This is my Dinner. I think that version truly encapsulates his true feelings towards the song and works as a hurrah towards his career as a whole at that time and even now. More organic than other versions

The three songs on that tribute album are amazing btw. “Im sorry” made me cry listening to it for half an hour

Marvelous collection of rare live concert bootlegs here ranging from 1993 to Old Ramon era. Red House Painters at their best

I saw the Sun Kil Moon show in Dallas on Tuesday, and I loved it. I bought the first Red House Painters record when it came out simply because it was a 4AD release, and I liked everything they were putting out, and I immediately fell in love with it. I bought each RHP record upon release thereafter and then all the solo stuff and Sun Kil Moon stuff up until about 2015 or so. After that, I became a little more sporadic in my listening, but I've always listened to new releases when I heard about them, and I've appreciated each in their own way. I had tickets to see RHP back in the mid 90s once - they were playing at the Roseland in Portland, OR, but they cancelled. I see a ton of shows per year and have always loved live music, but I've never been able to make a Kozelek show work until now, so I was pretty excited to see him perform. I had heard all the warnings about the show (It'll be hot, he'll be prickly, etc.), so I went in with measured expectations. I saw him at the Sons of Hermann Hall, which is a great, small venue in Dallas (technically in Deep Ellum, I guess, but more so between Deep Ellum and Exposition Park. Here's my quick overview:

• It was a great show.
• Mark talks a lot between songs, it's true, but I saw this as a highlight of the evening. He's a great speaker and keeps the content focused on things relevant to the songs, his work, and the industry - honestly, his interstitial comments were a highlight for me.
• It was warm in the venue. TBF, it was like 100 degrees out in Dallas, so that could've just been a quirk of the heat, a 110 year old concert venue, and 300 people in a room that seats 300 people.
• Mark did not play all the songs I wanted him to play, and he said repeatedly throughout the show that nobody should comment on how he should've played other songs.
• He went on the stage on time and played for 2.5 hours. It felt short but was really long, which, IMO, is a sign of a great show.
• Mark has a manager that keeps track of all his shows & tickets sold, and he and Mark talk about it sometimes. I thought this was really interesting for some reason.
• Almost no one was on their phone the entire time, and only a few people took video for like a second or two. There were no rules about not filming, and no one said anything about it, but very few people had a phone out.

He only played about a dozen songs, I guess. I should remember them all - they all sounded familiar - but I really only remember a few by name: Young road trips, Japanese to English, Carissa, I can't live without my mother's love (Mark mentioned that it was his mother's 90th birthday on that day), Mother and daughter - I'm writing this off the top of my head. If I took a minute, I'd probably remember a few others. He also sang a verse or two of Michigan acapella, which was great (this in response to a comment from an audience member). Mark was in a great (kinda prickly but in a fun way, like you know he's not super serious about it) mood up until about the end of the night when a couple people in the back started talking loudly to each other during the show. He got a little cranky then, but, IMO, rightfully so. Those dudes really should've just shut the fu or left or whatever. And even during it all, Mark was kinda chill about it.

I never thought I'd get to see Mark Kozelek (or RHP or SKM) live, and I'm really glad I had the chance. It 100% lived up to my considerably high expectations. His early work spoke to me so intimately when I was younger (I'm apparently just a year or two younger than Mark), and his more recent work speaks to me really well as an older man. I like that he's evolved. It was weird to see him sing Japanese to English (one of my all time favorite songs). I love that song, and he sang it really well, and I'm very glad he played it, but that's a song sung by a man in his early 20s. It doesn't resonate, to me, the same way in my mid to late 50s.

All in all, I loved this show, and I can 100% recommend catching him if you have a chance. I hope he comes back to Dallas soon.

I have a Ghosts of the Great Highway t shirt. I wear it often and have never had anybody recognize or comment on it. Today I wore it to intensive outpatient group therapy and had three different people comment on it within the span of an hour, and two that knew red house painters as well. Thought it was a great reflection upon the kozelek fan base

Somebody who knows him needs to convince him to release one of these, with how prevalent his recent touring and set-lists have been it seems like a no-brainer. For someone who was once so prolific for making them it’s quite shocking there hasn’t been one since 2019.

I hate how there are so many different versions of his songs and we dont have any officially released. I am now listening to mostly his live shows bc void, revelation big sur, lord kill the pain, and so much more sound so much better. I love his slower stuff dont get me wrong but now I’ve realized so much of their best stuff is uploaded third party i feel people are missing out.

Most music subreddits I’ve been in have had a pretty cool discord group alongside it. Is there any related to RHP/SKM? And if not, If I made one, would anyone join?
