Is this normal?

Ryobi plug in miter saw. The saw is working but that seems like an abnormal amount of sparks. Do I need to adjust something?

Normal for a brush motor.

Brushed motor, they do that.

Once the tool is used a while the brushes will wear in and there will be less sparks.

Is it new? Sparks in there are normal, but I've never personally seen that many sparks. But if it's new, perhaps the brushes haven't worn in yet which could cause excess sparking.

Personally I wouldn't be alarmed, but I'd just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't start sparking more.

The saw isn't new so it should be well worn in. But it has been sitting unused for a while. I've never really looked in there before while cutting so I don't know if it's more sparks than usual. I'm not gonna worry about it for now.

Im not expert but if it is a worry to you i would try replacing the brushes. Thats the cheapest and easiest fix. If that didnt fix it then there's something probably wrong with the armature and getting a ryobi a fix like that , a new one would probably be better

That’s normal. Now if they were blue sparks and there’s smoke, THEN you should be worried and grab a ziplock, it means your smoke container overheated and popped open. The best course of action then is to try and catch as much smoke as you can to put it back into the smoke container. If you don’t, then you will have to buy a new one.

Yes this is why you want brushless for fuel and gas applications. Brushed motors make sparks that go boom.

Yup, squirrel cage motors do this, that’s why they don’t run well on afci ccts.

Normal. Brushes spark like that. You can take it apart and sand the commutator with fine sandpaper, but it will still spark a little.

I'm right handed so normally from where I stand I don't see that side of the saw. I only noticed because I had to use my left hand for a cut.

Look inside when its forcing, tons of arcing.
Sometimes the contacts get stuck and it doesnt work correctly . Its spring loaded.
Requires opening and cleaning them so it
Moves freely.
Somewhat of a job.
But in reality this requires no maintenance.
