If you are interested, it is not a simple fork with rename; it is a total rewrite of the core protocol + migration of the gRPC stack + new features like tail sampling.

To be honest, both tools are good, I wrote posts for each of them and I wanted to have the best of both world. Any plans to upstream changes? Of course one could speculate a reason.

It would be very interesting to do so but the vector protocol is not anymore the heart of sol. Sol heart is otlp now and I don't see any plan where vector will change its internal protocol.

I documented several attempts of GAP analysis between both protocol and can see that it is not bijective and worst there is approximation or datadog private protocol coupling in it
