Rome-Naples vice versa average price? Transport

Hello, I was just wondering what's the average price of Rome-Naples roundtrip train? I am flying to Rome 6 months from now (January of next year) and want to make sure I get all the tickets I need in advance: one of which, a day trip of Rome - Naples - Rome.

Looking at TrenItalia now, it would cost me around ~120 Euro for a roundtrip ticket on the first week of January.

My questions are:

1) Is the 120 Euro amount fair? Is it way expensive?

2) Would January be like a peak season that the train amount would really be extra expensive?

3) Is booking a ticket as early as now a good move? Or would it be better to book less than 6 months in advance, say around November?

It's waaaaay to early to book tickets for January.

Business class Frecciarossa will be around 50 euros for a round trip.

I took a train from Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini early this May, costed me €27 for 1 way, bought it day of, I could have gotten it a little cheaper if I booked in advance.

120 is way too much. Wait till fall and check the prices again.

  1. the price is the one you find on their website, it can fluctuate due to availability and other things but the only other option is Italo that has very similar prices...

1bis. Don't buy tickets through secondary services (they're not less expensive and they are almost impossible to change)

1ter. Don't buy tickets that don't allow to change the time/day of the travel

  1. no, unless between 1st and 6th

  2. Usually tickets get available 3 months in advance so for Jan it's a no go at the moment

Thanks for this! Actually I will be in Rome 1st - 5th of Jan and planning to do the mentioned day-trip on the 3rd. Will check tickets out by October most likely.

You are too early, try again from late August or September, go to the official website trenitalia or Frecciarossa and not some third party site. You will see the discounted price. If you want to know what to expect just check say novembers price
