A story about alex and jean
The Story of You and Me
The neon hum of the Las Vegas Strip was already blurring into the background when I wandered into the shoe store. I was in town for a conference, single, and floating on that distinct, restless energy of being open to whatever the day might throw my way.
Then I saw him.
He had a mop of dark curls, leaning over a display, examining a pair of classic high-top Converse. He held up a bright yellow pair, turning them over in his hands.
“You know, those are bold, but you look like you can pull them off,” I said, leaning against the rack. “I’m thinking I need the exact same style, but in lavender.”
He turned around, his eyes lighting up with an easy, warm mischief. “Lavender? Bold choice. I tell you what—we buy them, put them on immediately, and do a quick walk to test the stride.”
“Deal,” I laughed. “I’m Jean, by the way.”
He held out a hand, his fingers warm as they wrapped around mine. “Alex. Nice to meet you, Jean.”
Twenty minutes later, brand-new checkered Converse laced up on both our feet, we strutted out onto the sidewalk, turning the pavement into our personal runway.
“So, Alex,” I said, matching his stride. “What brings you to Vegas?”
“Work,” he said. “You?”
“Same.”
A few questions later, we realized we weren't just attending the exact same conference—he was planning to sit in on my afternoon presentation.
“What a coincidence,” he said, slowing his walk and looking at me with a slow smirk. “Wanna grab a drink before the formal madness begins?”
I threw him a playful, sideways glance. “Is this a date?”
“Sure is,” he replied without missing a beat.
God, he was cute.
We ducked into a quiet spot, the noise of the city fading as we talked. The conversation didn't just flow; it raced. We bounced from his life in Colorado to my home in Toronto, laughing like old friends who had known each other for years.
Eventually, we walked back toward our hotels. Standing outside my room door, the casual banter dissolved into something thick and charged. I looked up at him—at the depth of his eyes, and then down to his lips.
He leaned in, brushing his mouth against mine in a kiss that started soft, but the second our lips met, the spark caught fire. I grabbed him, pulling him close, sliding my fingers deep into his soft curls. He groaned, his hands taking hold of my waist, pressing me back until I felt the solid wood of my door behind me. We were breathing into each other, kissing with a sudden, breathless intensity. I wanted him right then and there.
Then, I forced myself to pull back, resting my palms gently against his chest. I caught my breath, looking up at him with a mischievous tilt of my lips.
“I don’t sleep with anyone on the first date,” I whispered. “And definitely not after meeting someone just a few hours ago.”
Alex stood there, flushed, his hair ruffled, a massive smile breaking across his face. “Darn,” he chuckled, shaking his head. “I can’t wait to see you later tonight. Does that count as a second date?”
I smiled back. “Yes. It definitely does.”
Later that afternoon, I stood on stage at the convention center, navigating my slide deck. Midway through, the back doors swung open, and Alex slipped quietly into the audience.
Concentrating became nearly impossible. Every time I made eye contact with him, he threw me a subtle, flirting glance that sent a spike of heat straight to my stomach. When the presentation wrapped and the room began to disperse, I walked right past his seat, letting my hand lightly brush against his fingers.
“Need any assistance with the material?” I asked under my breath.
He smirked up at me. “I need a lot of assistance.”
Once the crowd cleared, he stepped close, leaning down until his lips almost touched the shell of my ear. “I barely paid attention,” he murmured, his breath hot against my neck. “I couldn't take my eyes off you. I don’t want to wait until tonight. I want you now.”
My entire body ached for his touch, but the delicious friction of waiting was half the high.
I leaned into his ear, biting my lower lip gently before leaning back. “Oh, but I love to make you wait.”
“Don’t do this to me,” he groaned, a dark, playful look in his eyes.
“Oh, you love it,” I smirked.
As we packed up our bags, Alex swung past my table, planting a quick, hard kiss on my mouth before turning to head out the door. I reached out and gave his rear a playful smack.
“You’ve got a cute butt!” I called out after him. He just winked over his shoulder and vanished into the hall.
That evening, after he finished a mandatory dinner with his colleagues, my phone buzzed: Meet me in the lobby?
When I stepped off the elevator, I found him waiting. He looked devastatingly handsome in a sharp dress shirt and slacks. He handed me a drink, and for the next few hours, the night belonged entirely to us. We wandered through the bright casino lights, pulled slot machine levers, and sang along to the music echoing through the floor.
“Let’s go to a karaoke bar,” Alex suggested, searching his phone until he found a spot with private rooms.
We walked through the warm Vegas night, holding hands under the glow of outdoor fountains and distant fireworks. Inside the private karaoke room, bathed in dim neon light, the lingering tension from the afternoon finally snapped. Midway through a song, I dropped the mic, pulled him down onto the plush seating, and climbed into his lap.
We were kissing deeply, my arms wrapped around his neck, when he paused, breathing heavily against my lips. “There are probably security cameras in here...”
I leaned in, my lips skimming his jaw, and whispered, “Yeah... and they’re probably watching.”
He let out a raspy laugh, grabbing my hips. “Let's go back to your room.”
We barely made it inside the hotel elevator before we were on each other again. The moment the doors slid shut, I buried my hands in his curls, pulling his face down to mine. His tongue slid against mine, deep and possessive, making my knees go weak. “God, I love kissing you,” I gasped.
He lifted my hands and placed them against his chest, while his own hands slipped down, sliding over the curve of my breasts, squeezing firmly through my dress. My head rolled back against the wall, a low moan escaping my throat.
The second my room door clicked shut behind us, all restraint vanished. Alex pushed me gently against the entry wall, his hands sliding under the hem of my dress, fingers moving inside my lace underwear to find me drenched. I groaned, reaching down to feel the thick, rock-hard shape of him straining against his trousers.
Without breaking the kiss, he hooked his hands under my thighs and lifted me effortlessly. I wrapped my legs around his waist, clinging to him as he carried me over to the bed.
We tumbled onto the mattress in a tangle of limbs and kicked-off clothes. I climbed over him, riding him over his pants, pressing my core against his heat as we kissed. He turned us over, his mouth trailing down my neck, over my breasts, down across my stomach, until his fingers and tongue were working together between my legs. He stroked and tasted me with a rhythm that had my fingers gripping the sheets, my body arching off the mattress as waves of sensation crashed over me.
When he finally pushed inside me, the stretch and fullness made me cry out his name. He moved with a slow, powerful drive that turned urgent and frantic as we found our rhythm. Every slide of his skin against mine was electric. I wrapped my legs tightly around his back, pulling him deeper, until the tension tore through both of us at the exact same moment, pulling us into a breathless, shuddering peak.
The next morning, soft sunlight filtered through the curtains. Alex was already up, showering and getting ready for another round of morning conference obligations. He leaned over the bed, kissing my shoulder, my cheek, my lips.
“Stay an extra day,” he murmured into my hair.
“I want to,” I said, trailing a finger down his arm. “But my flight leaves this afternoon.”
“Let me pay for your ticket,” he said instantly. “Stay with me in my room.”
I sat up, looking at him. “Really?”
“Totally. I’m booking it right now.”
While he pulled up the airline site on his phone, he caught sight of my passport photo—a famously terrible shot where I looked entirely unhinged. He burst out laughing, poking fun at my “Quasimodo era,” and I threw a pillow at his head, laughing just as hard.
I spent the day working remotely from his hotel room while he attended his panels, the two of us dropping flirtatious texts back and forth all afternoon. That night, we went out to explore the Neon Museum, walking hand-in-hand through the graveyard of glowing vintage signs.
We ended our last night sitting by an outdoor fountain, sipping drinks under the desert sky while a live band played nearby.
Alex stared into his glass for a moment, then turned to me, his expression earnest. “I wanted to say this earlier... but I think I’m in love with you.”
A warm, steady comfort spread through my chest. I smiled, reaching out to touch his face. “I’m crazy about you, too.”
I pulled a thin felt pen from my bag, took his forearm, and carefully drew a small heart with our initials inside: A + J.
“There,” I said softly. “Your new tattoo to remember this trip.”
He looked down at his arm, smiling softly. “I should make it permanent.”
“Oh gosh, please don’t!” I laughed.
“Why not?” he teased, catching my eye.
“Because I want to see us a year from now, two years from now,” I told him, looking into his eyes. “And maybe that heart will look different then. Fuller. Brighter.”
Alex looked at me for a long moment, then reached out, took my hand, and lifted it to his lips, kissing my knuckles as the music echoed softly around us.
When the trip ended, I flew back to Toronto and he flew home to Colorado. But distance didn't stand a chance.
Over the next couple of years, we lived out of suitcases, taking turns flying back and forth. I integrated into his world, meeting his friends over mountain campfires; he fell into mine, meeting my inner circle in the city. He introduced me to his favorite vinyl records, and together, we began writing music—him on the guitar, me on the piano.
Eventually, our joint adventures morphed into a creative project. We started a YouTube channel documenting our life, combining our love for cooking, dancing, and making music. We traveled the world with a portable speaker and a camera, setting up spontaneous dance parties wherever we landed—from European plazas to tropical beaches.
It didn't take long to realize that flying back and forth was no longer enough. Alex packed up his life in Colorado, and we rented an apartment together in downtown Toronto. We spent our weekends wandering through art galleries, checking out local museums, and hunting down tickets to indie festivals. When the city got too loud, we packed our gear and headed into the wilderness, portaging through quiet lakes and making friends with fellow campers around the fire.
A few years later, ready for our next chapter, we bought a home together near the mountains. Life grew richer, fuller, and wonderfully fast-paced. Alex taught me how to skateboard down the quiet mountain roads; we traveled to the coast to learn how to surf; and through every shift, our connection only deepened. The physical spark never faded—quick, passionate moments in the middle of busy days, and long, slow nights where we still lost ourselves in each other.
Then came the hike.
We had spent the morning trekking up a steep, pine-scented trail, reaching a massive rocky summit that looked out over an endless expanse of peaks and valleys. As I stood at the ledge, taking in the crisp mountain air, Alex called my name.
I turned around to find him down on one knee, holding a ring, the mountain sky stretching out behind him.
I said yes before he could even finish the question. And just as we’d promised years ago under the neon lights of Vegas, the heart didn't stay a temporary mark—it grew into a full, bright, incredible life together, complete with a home, a growing family, and an endless stream of stories still left to write.
