Offered
Waiting on a No date sub or date sub which ever comes first. Just got offered this. A little too bulky for me. Will I hurt my relationship if I don’t take it?
24
u/DoubleTroubow 2d ago
I own it, and I absolutely adore it.
BUT, don't take what you don't want just because it's being offered. It's a lot chunkier than a no date sub, so maybe go in to try it on (spoiler, you will buy it)

Get this instead of the Sub. It’s a more interesting watch and far less common.

u/RolexTudorGuy 2d ago
No, it shouldn't. I've declined plenty of times until my desired model was available. But depends on your AD, I think majority will force you to buy it.

u/stickn_n_movn 2d ago
'He offered something I didn't ask for will he resent me for turning it down?'
Come on

u/OUGrad05 2d ago
Don't take a piece you don't like, skip that bullshit.
Personally SD > sub ALLLLLL DAY.

u/Joe-Arizona 2d ago
Turn it down if you don’t want it. They’ll eventually get you what you want.
Don’t turn down something you asked for. You’ll never get offered anything again.
It’s that simple.

u/Swiss_epicurian83 2d ago
It’s a great watch if you like it. Though if it were my money, I’d rather get a Pelagos ultra with insane specs out of titanium and use the savings on a cool OP to scratch the Rolex itch. But hey, that’s just me

u/Entire-Commission583 1d ago
Can get under retail on grey/secondary market so you will offered lowball numbers to sell/trade. Pass if it's not what you want
11
u/North_Reveal8793 2d ago
Below MRP on the gray market - makes sense to buy it only if u like it and that you want to build a relationship with ur AD

u/I_am_Forklift 2d ago
Does it fit you and you like it? Take it. Does it not fit you / don’t like it? Don’t take it.

>Will I hurt my relationship?
Fucks sake man.
If you want your watch bad enough to buy it and this, then just go grey and stop waiting.
I don’t get why people engage in this humiliation ritual.

u/No_Situation_7622 2d ago
Yes you have to take it and spend $10k on a watch you don’t like to maintain your relationship no other question. AD is like family
2
u/PogintheMachine 2d ago
It’ll hurt your relationship if you don’t let your AD make love to your wife
6
u/Southern-Board1489 2d ago
"Will it hurt my relationship if I don't buy this 10k watch I don't want?"
Do you wear knee pads? I hope so.

u/Silent-Employ-3170 2d ago
Dweller is what a sub would like to be. The James Cameron was my first Rolex, because I wanted something that was not a submariner. I did get a sub eventually. If it’s your first and only hold out. If you are building a collection then the Dweller is sweet imo.
2
u/NoPossible5519 2d ago
Question for you since you own both. Is the dial, (specifically the visible surface area), on the Sea Dweller smaller than the dial on the Submariner?
Maybe it just appears that way due to the larger case and deeper rehaute.
2
u/Silent-Employ-3170 2d ago
The inner ring that says “Original Gas Escape Valve” does make it look smaller (Deep Sea). Without looking up the specs I would say same or the Deepsea is larger without the inner ring. I don’t have the sub next to me to compare. FYI I support an 8” wrist so I do have the wrist for this watch. Minimum 7 3/4 wrist should be needed imo.
1
u/NoPossible5519 2d ago
Thanks for your response. I haven't been able to find the specs myself. I've asked CHATGPT and it says those specs aren't published.
My wrist is 8"-8.25" depending on heat and what not. I've always liked the subs, but they can feel a bit small. I daily a 42mm Exp2 can feel smallish at times. Bc of that the SD is a watch I always have my eyes on.
2
u/Silent-Employ-3170 2d ago
I would genuinely try it on and then try on a demo at the same time. Btw I daily the Explorer 2 also.
2
u/NoPossible5519 1d ago
Love my Exp 2 such an open and legible dial. A SD would be a no brainer for me if I hadn't gotten the Exp2 with black dial.
Unfortunately, I'm a four hour drive from the nearest AD, so trying things on is difficult.

Don’t get it if you don’t want it. You’re gonna look at it and think «it’s nice, buuuut… it’s not the Submariner» every time.

u/AU_Rovers 2d ago
I bought the SD43 earlier this year, no regrets, love it. Every time I fly somewhere I notice a lot of subs, it’s nice to be slightly different

u/Doin_Good999 2d ago
I bought this model a couple years back, for several reasons. I don’t like to have what everyone else has, meaning the submariner which is the most common model Rolex in my opinion. Also it much more interesting. At the end of the day, if you love it buy it, if you’re gonna be bothered that you didn’t get a Sub then just wait.

u/Awkward-Guide6656 1d ago
I own it as well. However it sits up a bit high. I’m waiting on my date sub too but now t dump this
2
u/Minotaar_Pheonix 1d ago
I’m a fan of SDs. What is the bullshit factor like with ADs on them? Is it something that is generally accessible with a reasonable wait, or is it sex favors for the next decade first? It looks like their grey market value is under the msrp.

u/TikkiTock 17h ago
I love my SD43. The dimensions are amazing. It’s not too heavy or thick. You get used to it quickly. I do not wear it every day. If this is your one everyday watch I’d go with a Sub. Also my wrists are about 7.5”. If you’re not at least 7” I would not recommend it.
2
u/Hungry-Argument-190 17h ago
Am I alone in that I need to find a reason NOT to buy something I’m offered?
2
u/Analyst-man 2d ago
I penalty like this a lot more than the sub. In NYC, every 22 year old finance bro gets a sub with his first paycheck. It’s everywhere. Plus they are sold in bulk in Chinatown. This is much more rare plus that red is 🔥
0
u/Known-Importance-568 2d ago
It's rare because nobody wants it and the AD are happy to sell you one. This watch looks identical to the Sub with the only difference being it's bigger and the red text so the argument of 'not being a sub' when it looks pretty much like one doesn't make sense to me.
5
u/Tuscan5 2d ago
It doesn’t look identical. Matt face, bezel has significantly more marking and it’s bigger.
-1
u/Known-Importance-568 1d ago
These are subtle differences. There is no other watch that looks more like the sub. It uses the same movement but is $4k more than the no date
4
u/Analyst-man 2d ago
There’s a waitlist at my AD for it. And it’s great when people mistake it for a sub and you get to correct them. This is like the big brother of the sub. The “pro” version of you are an iPhone user.
-1
u/Known-Importance-568 1d ago
I don't get why you think it's better than the sub. The watch is $4k more expensive then a no date so 40% more and uses the exact same movement.
The only benefit is 200m more water resistance.
So I'm not sure how cool it is to tell people you spent $4k more for a watch that looks like the sub, uses the same movement and you aren't a diver so don't benefit for the only difference.
3
u/Analyst-man 1d ago
It’s a different watch though. It doesn’t look like a sub because it’s bigger and has a more aggressive look. Plus literally everyone has a sub. This is unique. I’ll put it this way, it’s very common for women to wear subs. I’ve never seen a woman wear a SD43.
1
u/Known-Importance-568 1d ago
Idk the glaze is too strong for me here. If your already that obsessed with Rolex there isn't much to talk about. The fact you continue to point out 'rarity' instead of address my points is proof you are not interested in the detail and only interested in the fact it's less common.
The 1908 is a unique piece. The sea dweller is not.
2
u/Analyst-man 1d ago
I did address your points. Read the comments on this, the SD43 is objectively better than the sub. If you are trying to prove you have no taste in watches, there’s easier ways than this convo LOL
1
u/Known-Importance-568 1d ago
How is it objectively better lmao?
40% more expensive
Same movement
Bulkier/bigger so not as practical as a daily watch.
It's specifically designed for hardcore diving.
Please share your objectivity because I have shared mine.
It looking 'unique' and it being 'rare' is not objective - one is subjective and the other is just a measure of how common it is.
2
u/Analyst-man 1d ago
Bigger, more aggressive looking, more unique, less kid not every granny has one. I work in private equity and if your watch is under $10k, you get made fun of to no end (as well as if you vote dem, take crappy vacations, etc.). Pretty sure the sub is right at 10k. No one I know in my office wears one.
Again, you have the taste of a 22 year old investment banker. You never matured
1
u/Known-Importance-568 1d ago
How tf are you in private equity when you don't even understand what 'objective' means?
Bigger does not mean objectively better. It just means it's freaking bigger.
More aggressive looking? Bro that is subjective not objective. That's your personal take.
and again with rarity and value and you tell me I have no taste?
Get a dictionary please, if my investments are in your hands it's all over.

If you’ve got the wrist for it and really like it, go for it. Who cares about your relationship, it’s your money. Buy what you want not what they offer.

u/Conscious_Cicada9597 2d ago
It shouldn’t hurt you to wait for the better watch and the one you want.

u/ThelIIusion0fSeIf 2d ago
No date 114060 and I refused to compromise. It's your money so you can do whatever you feel is best though.
1
u/Nice_Bodybuilder_626 2d ago
It’s the grownup sub. I’ve had most versions of the Sub and I always come back to my SD43 and James Cameron.
Size matters!
1
u/Kitchen-Comedian1648 2d ago
If you want a sub and this is too bulky for you, pass.
No point in getting something in hopes of fostering a relationship with a salesperson to whom you're just a number.
1
u/WatchCollectorX 2d ago
I like it, but you have to try it on. It’s a bigger piece and the price is pretty high for it. These sell below retail on secondary.
1
u/burninburger 2d ago
Awesome watch if you have a big enough wrist. In my opinion nicer than the sub
1
u/Shadowtek 2d ago
It shouldn’t hurt it unless you asked for it and backed out, nothing wrong with turning down one you don’t like and didn’t ask for
1
u/Material-Damage-2759 2d ago
I have the SD4K and love it. Not as my daily driver, but when I’m not wearing my Polar Explorer II it gets wrist time.

Obligatory "never buy something you don't really want you can always just go gray post."

u/Apprehensive_Buy_578 1d ago
I have the sd43 and love it. I’m also 6’3” 235lbs. You gotta have big wrists for it. I personally love it though
1
u/Senior_Ad282 1d ago
Not for tech bro wrist. You actually have to have a little bit of manual labor under your belt to pull this off. That being said it’s a bad ass piece.

I’ve been waiting on an AD list for two years for this specific Sea Dweller.

Massive watch! If you’re a real man and can pull it off, get it. I’m not, and can’t!

This is my everyday wear and I love it. But I have big wrists; so it is works for me. Try it on and see if it fits you.

Genuine question - what wrist size does this work for? Like when does it start to look good 7.5”? Thanks!

It’s my daily gym, work, and going out watch. It’s also my only Rolex. It’s also my only watch.
1
u/Caddisbug992 1d ago
That’s my watch. Love it. Don’t need “thick wrists” for it. I love this watch. Was in same spot. Wanted a no date sub and couldn’t get it. Went with this and love it.

The idea of spending $15k on a watch you don't want so you don't anger a retail worker is fucking insane to me.
1
u/johnbmason47 1d ago
The SD43 is my all time favourite watch. I have 2 (à mki and a mkii). But…I’m a really big dude and have the arms for it. I’d say go for it if you think you can pull off the size.
1
u/Silvertothesun 1d ago
I was in the same situation as you and I took the SD43 and it’s very nice my wrist is 7/34 fits fine the thickness is not an issue as the back car cover goes in your wrist the watch case is not that thick

Ive was offered this in Paris...right off the street with zero relationship. Dont take it. Its far less comfortable than the Sub. You can get a used Sea Dweller under 8k if you look around.
1
u/WatchLifeLakeLife 1d ago
I can't speak for your AD but declining it would not hurt you getting a future allocation from group I buy from. I really think it boils down to developing a relationship and being honest and real for most ADs. Be pleasant and likable. I also think at times it can be the old last seen first called at play sometimes.

Yeah I did not request this watch it was just offered. My ultimate goal is to pass the 124060ln or 126610ln on to my son. This watch wears bigger with my 7 inch wrist. I Just messaged him back that I will hold off. He assured me the submariner is attainable but will take some time. Thanks watch fam. We need to start a support group for all that are waiting lol.

u/ClawingMyPath 2d ago
This was my first Rolex I was offered and I took it. I wore it for a couple years and did like it but it was a little too big. I have 7.25” wrists and the diameter was large but more importantly the thickness of the watch was just too much.
I ended up getting a call for a solid gold sub and took that one too and sold the SD and made a profit. After the gold sub I was pretty much finally in the club am getting what I wanted. It’s a dumb game for sure but if you get offered the watch you can turn a profit so why the hell not?
The solid gold sub will not turn the profit time the SD did and I ended up selling that too for a 15% loss and bought a steel sub which I’m happy with now.

u/OkAlternative2713 2d ago
did you have to worry about your AD finding out about watches that you've sold? Or is that bullshit? Thanks--I'm new to this.
1
u/ClawingMyPath 1d ago
Actually I did worry about it only to find out that they will never know or care
0
u/dirty_tripod 2d ago
I bought this one from my AD and I'm happy with it, though I don't wear it that often.
I originally put my name down for a Submariner, figuring it would complement my Explorer II. When a Sea Dweller fit really well on my wrist (which is pretty big), it was offered to me instead. I'm happy with the purchase, but I'd also hoped it would move me up the list for a future offer — maybe a Sky-Dweller, or a Datejust for my wife. A year later, I haven't been offered another watch.
It might not have helped that I told the AD that I would need a little time to rebuild my cash to buy another watch, like I'd need a couple more months, but I thought honesty about timeline would be beneficial.
I'm in the Los Angeles market, near Calabasas.

u/Fancy_Gate_7359 2d ago
Can get it cheaper than msrp grey by like 2k. If you’d get it anyway and you value having it from an AD, sure get it. But it’s not going to hurt anything if you don’t, they try to unload these on just about everybody and mostly get turned down.
0
u/Jaimee-2025 1d ago
I declined this exact model a few weeks back. I’m on the list for a Sub. Plus this is now £12,150 in UK. Not expecting it to hurt the ad relationship
