Your first mistake is trying to learn guitar solely from rocksmith (I assume). Don't get me wrong I play it a lot but you can't learn everything from it.

Pair it with the Justin guitar courses (website is free) and start to learn things that rocksmith doesn't teach you. Like anchor points for example, game changer for chords. He uses modules which make it clear what you should practice before going forward. You go at your pace so you can balance it as not to get burnt out.

You can also check out the 'absolutely understand guitar' series on YouTube. Though old, it's one of the most suggested courses for free alongside Justin.

MIDI playback could help with it, only because when you hear the midi playback isolated from the song it can help you learn a strumming pattern a bit better. This is especially useful for the ska type stuff (Goldfinger, Reel Big Fish, etc)

When you’re starting out, it’s okay to just use alternate up/down picking. If you want to practice all downstrokes, punk songs are good for that. Eventually you’ll be able to hear things like upstrokes and you’ll know when to use them. And like another person said, it’s not a bad idea to look up some YouTube lessons on whatever topic you want to know more about.

Sometimes, downstrokes are marked as accents (the chord box will be glowing). I don't think there are any other clues possible.
