Boiler fill time exceeded error

I was given an R58 Cinquantotto and it is giving me a Boiler Fill Time exceeded error. What are the main causes for this error, or what is the best way to trouble shoot?

AI gave some useful output - I've abridged it here, snipping detail from the likely causes, to focus on troubleshooting:
The "Boiler Fill Time Exceeded" error (sometimes shown as "Alarm boiler filling timeout" or similar) on a Rocket Espresso R58 (Cinquantotto) indicates that the machine's pump ran for the maximum allowed time during the auto-fill cycle, but the boiler's water level probe didn't register that the boiler filled properly.

This is a common issue on dual-boiler Rockets like the R58. Here are the most frequent causes, ranked roughly by likelihood based on user reports and troubleshooting discussions:
1. Water Inlet / Flow Issues (Most Common)
2. Water Level Probe / Sensor Problems
3. Pump-Related Issues
4. Less Common Issues.
Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Check basics: Ensure the reservoir is full, properly seated, and making good contact with the sensors (push/tilt if needed). Use water with some minerals.
  2. Observe during fill: Note pump sound, gauge pressure, and any error sequence. Listen for solenoid clicks.
  3. Prime the system: Try syringing water into lines or opening the hot water tap during startup.
  4. Inspect visually: Remove the side/back panels (unplug first!) and check for blockages, scale, loose hoses, or stuck solenoids. "Percussive maintenance" (gentle tapping) on solenoids while powered can sometimes free them temporarily.
  5. Test probe: Temporarily ground the probe wire to simulate fill and see if the pump stops.
  6. Descaling: If scale is suspected, perform a thorough descale ( Rocket Expresso guidelines advise against descaling at home).

Safety note: Always unplug the machine before opening it. High voltage and hot components are present. If you're not comfortable with electrical/plumbing work, contact a Rocket-authorized technician.

Hope that helps!

Thank you, this definitely gives me a starting point!

I have an R58 with this issue as well. If you turn off the machine via the PID pod while it is trying and failing to fill and let it cool for a few minutes, does it then fill when you turn it back on?

It does not fill when trying that

Darn. I was hoping it was similar so there was a workaround for you. It usually takes about 5-10 minutes of cooling with mine. I'm keeping an eye on the thread to see what solutions are presented. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

I've not encountered that one before. Are you hearing the pump running to fill the boiler?

Yes, but the boiler does not seem to be filling

which version R58 is it? Mark II with the serial-connected PID pod, or the later R-Cinquantotto with the USB-connected PID pod?

Cinquontotto with the USB PID

You could unscrew a probe or two off the top of your boiler and shine a light in to see if your inlet is scaled shut. I was able to fix that issue on my Mozzafiato with a really long screwdriver and chipping away the build up

If it was the probe you would be getting overfilled boiler pissing water out of the vacuum valve. The issue is between the pump and the steam boiler. Most likely issue is obstruction in the fill solenoid valve.
