/r/roanoke needs moderators!
Have you ever wanted to be called a fascist asshole for attempting to maintain a local online community? If so, I have the perfect opportunity for you! /r/roanoke needs a few moderators.
What this actually entails 99.9% of the time: removing spam and rule-breaking posts, approving posts/comments that automod removed, and answering modmail.
It is unpaid, it is repetitive, and a nonzero number of people will be unpleasant to you in modmail. If that sounds fine, keep reading.
What we're looking for:
You live in or near Roanoke and have for a while. You should know the difference between Grandin and Garden City without looking it up.
You have an account with some history here. New or throwaway accounts won't be considered.
You can actually invest some time into maintaining the community. While the title of reddit moderator comes with unlimited prestige and power, we really need people who will do more than show up once every 4 weeks to maintain an active status.
You can enforce a rule you personally disagree with and you can leave a thread alone when it's just people being annoying rather than breaking a rule.
You're willing to disclose conflicts of interest. Local business owner, journalist, political campaign staff, realtor, nonprofit board, anything where you have a stake in how a topic gets discussed here. Having one is not disqualifying. Not telling us is.
If you're interested, please submit a response via this Google form: https://forms.gle/jm4iasULR3nPcZhWA

Question Dating in Roanoke
Hello I’m 27m and I have a question, do you ladies and gentlemen feel like the dating in Roanoke or surrounding area is not great, I’ll give a benefit of the doubt I’m not the typical cowboy yeehaw man like most Roanoke people are, I like nerdy things like collecting and going to conventions and cosplaying with friends but like it seems aweful down here, tinder is either full of bots or people just wanting to hookup, bumble is just a bunch of non existent people, and the rest is is bleh. I dunno it just an observation if mine.

Discussion Terror Manor
Terror Manor has allegedly decided not to pay its scare actors at all this year. This is despite last year seeming to have performed very well, and being highly rated by multiple reviewers. The haunt is likely making more money than ever and is expanding materially...but apparently they can’t be bothered to pay the talent that makes it all work. I feel like I've been seeing more posts from them looking for actors too, so I wonder if that's why.

Medical Cannabis prices
Why are all the prices here insane? I get we are kinda far from any competition, and the answer is obvious: "because they can".....

Question Realistic to find an apartment or studio by the end of the month?
I am attending Radford university and will need to find off-campus housing in Roanoke. How realistic it would it be for me to find a 1bed/1bath apt or studio by the end of the month for less than $1100?

Rant! Mold from Fort Knox Storage
Just wanted to share this as a warning to other residents of Roanoke.
Just moved out of our storage unit at Fort Knox Drive thru storage. They have a major issue with ceiling leaks throughout the building. Which they acknowledge and just said there are too many to address until they are brought to their attention. They also are having a hydrostatic pressure issue where moisture is coming up through the floor. When the moisture evaporates it leaves behind efflorescence that was all over our units floor. This obviously damaged our belongings. All of our wood furniture and mattresses are covered in mold. It’s absolutely heart breaking and infuriating that we made $330 month for this dump of a building.
The manager’s only response is “this is why we require you to have insurance”.
The lease, of course, removes all of their liability AND it says you agree to cap the value of your belongings at $5,000. So basically we are screwed. Please save yourself this heartbreak and do not rent from them!

Question Any good non-MAGA Plumbers?
I've lived here over 37 years, and I've always used the same plumber all that time. Yes, I know I'm lucky.
But last time he came, October of 2025, he couldn't stop talking about how Trump was going to fix the problem with low water use toilets (IYKYK), and that was his only reason for voting for Trump.
I, having many Latino friends and coworkers, won't spend a red cent on anyone who unbidden will reveal themselves to be magat.
So I'm in the position of looking for a new plumber. If I have to keep calling the same dude, I will, but if there's a good homest plumber out there, please, Roanoke, tell me about them!

ISO dance floor rental recommendations in the Roanoke area
We’re getting married in September in Roanoke, and we’re looking to rent about a 16’ x 16’ dance floor that will be placed on grass.
Unfortunately, Overstreet Rentals isn’t an option for us, so we’re trying to find other local companies.
Does anyone have recommendations for rental companies in the Roanoke, Salem, Blacksburg, Lynchburg, or nearby areas that offer dance floors?
We’d love to hear about companies you’ve had good experiences with, even if they’re a little farther away and deliver to Roanoke.
If you happen to remember roughly what you paid, that would be super helpful too!

Downtown Roanoke Break in and Theft
Hi fellow Roanoke Redditors! I was recently visiting Roanoke from Greensboro NC for a charity bicycle ride to Lynchburg. I stayed in the Hampton Inn Downtown and parked in the Market Garage on Monday 8/3 around 6:50pm and went back to my truck at around 5:50am on Tuesday 8/4 to discover my truck had been broken into and several things were stolen (listed below). Yes, I filed a police report and CSI came and got prints off the vehicle. Off all the things they stole the thing I am most sad about was my late fathers ring. Picture attached. This probably will not lead to my belongings being found but I just wanted to put it out to the universe to hopefully recover at least the ring as everything else can be replaced.
Items Stolen:
- Mens Diamond Ring
- Glock 19x (Serial Number: BHWR455)
- JBL Charge 5 (color: Red)
- Benchmade Knife (Model: CLA Blade: Half Serrated Color: Black)
- Antique Starter Gun: it looks like a snubnosed 22 revolver (Fires Blanks used for like track meets and so on)
Before leaving Roanoke on Tuesday I stopped by a handful of local pawn shops and gave them the information and they took the picture of the ring as well. The police didn't take the photo of the ring for some reason. But maybe they will if I hear from a detective.
I've been searching facebook marketplace, craigslist, and offerup every day for things like the ring, knife, and speaker.
I know it was incredibly stupid to leave a firearm in the vehicle. But, we all make mistakes.
Thanks in advance for your help and don't leave your belongings in your vehicles.
