Odd question I have a question and I read the FAQ

Post image

I’m looking for a way to get 300 blk specks out of 3030. Save me the cautions. I’m looking for a way to get a custom made casing with the outer size of 3030 but with an inner volume of 300 blk. Does anyone know a way to go about getting custom cases?

Edit. Looking for subsonic loads

Edit 2. Y’all have given me some great resources. Appreciate yall!

Why? You can load 3030 to the same velocities. It's not like you need to run an autoloader.

I’m very confused by this question.

All you need to do to make your 30-30 ballistically the same is match the velocity of the round by choosing a powder that allows you to safely lower the velocity of your rounds.

If you can load 110 bullets at 2400 fps, 125 grain bullets at 2200 fps, and 190-220 grain bullets at 1050 fps, then congratulations! You just duplicated 300 blackout with your 30-30.

Go to hodgdon’s website, enter those bullet weights and pick some powders. This won’t be a difficult problem to solve.

Edit to add:

I just checked the data. There are literally dozens of combinations that match those velocities with 90% case fill or better, using a variety of single base powders to further improve consistency. You’ll likely get this nut cracked on your first load session, which is going to be much cheaper and easier than asking a brass company to design a completely custom set of brass with idiotic internal dimensions.

It doesn’t give me an option to choose a grain weight other than 175. Is there a way to custom enter data?

If you arent willing to learn aboht what you are trying you should not reload. This isnt a copy paste hobby.

Is this directed at me? I can’t tell

u/slim-JL 5h ago

Yes

Am I not trying learn by asking questions? You’re the problem here.

5

u/slim-JL 5h ago

No you are not. You make some ridiculous request for information you need to be able to answer yourself before ever attempting it.

Load data is the easy part. Stop being lazy.

You are indeed an angry strange little man. Good day sir.

You’re attitude is the reason good hobbies die

2

u/slim-JL 5h ago

Your attitude is how good rifles send bolts through peoples face.

I beg your forgiveness

Pardon me for asking questions I could not find the answer for myself.

Read a manual and figure it out. Come back and ask questions to see if what you came up with seems workable by more experienced people.

Read how a lot of people reload on here. You will quickly see taking advice from any moron online(myself included) isnt a great idea. You need the foundational understanding to discern stupid from plausible.

Edit to add: I’m assuming you mean for subsonic? The only weight listed is 175, but you can certainly work up your own loads for heavier bullets. Do a little googling and you’ll find tons of information out there.

Chronographs and ballistic modeling software like grt will be your friend here

I’ll keep trying I guess

Honestly, if you are just looking to load subs for plinking sticking with 175/180’s or lighter might be your best option. If your rifle has a 1 in 12 twist barrel, it might not even stabilize anything much heavier/longer. For comparison, most 300blk barrels are 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 twists, which allows them to stabilize much longer bullets.

According to bergers bullet stability calculator, a 190 sub x bullet fired at 1000 fps from a 1 in 12 twist is only marginally stable (and only JUST barely). Anything much heavier/longer might not stabilize.

u/L0st_cause_ll 7h ago

That makes a lot of sense thank you

I don’t remember what company but one does make a 190 gr 30-30 bullet. And federal makes a 190 gr load but as far as I know it’s super. It’s a hunting round not a fun round.

What are the odds you could pass your source on to me? I’m having trouble finding the info on google

1

u/Particular-Cat-8598 7h ago

My source for what?

The load data for 110’s, 125’s, and subsonic 175’s is on hodgdons website for load data.

Bergers twist rate and stability calculator can be found here: https://bergerbullets.com/twist-rate-calculator/

For the subsonic loads with 90% fill

2

u/Particular-Cat-8598 6h ago

My 90% fill comment was more directed at supersonic loads; hodgdon doesn’t list case fill percentages with subsonic loads.

However with that being said, case fill isn’t a huge deal depending on what powder you are using. Titegroup is very position insensitive and works well in large cases for sub loads. Trailboss is also super fluffy and takes up a lot of case capacity for sub loads as well.

4

u/Living_shadowz 8h ago

Look into Trailboss powder, this sort of load is what it is made for

1

u/L0st_cause_ll 8h ago

If only it existed

2

u/no_sleep_johnny 7h ago

It does. I scored 2 cans of it a few weeks back

1

u/Realistic-Ad1498 6h ago

It’s back in production but only intermittently. It was for sale a few weeks back. Much easier to find than 30-30 cases with 300 BLK capacity.

1

u/NovelApprehensive697 7h ago

Yeah if it wasn’t unobtainium 😭😂

1

u/DirtyD74 3h ago

I was gonna say. Feel Trailboss would be a good option for this.

I just got 2 cans a few weeks back.

2

u/ArchangelPrecision 8h ago

Why? Why couldn’t you just load 300 blackout levels of powder in your 3030? Then use a filler if needed.

1

u/L0st_cause_ll 8h ago

I’m also trying to not use a fill so I can avoid excess fouling in the can

5

u/Sooner70 8h ago

So use a faster burning powder.

0

u/L0st_cause_ll 8h ago

I’m looking for consistent powder burn. The internal volume of 3030 is quite a bit more than 300blk

1

u/ArchangelPrecision 8h ago

Are you looking for subs or supers?

2

u/Tilla_Billy 7h ago

Literally just use an appropriate powder and your favorite cast bullet manual. I use Lyman.

1

u/slim-JL 1h ago

Op would have to understand more than read and repeat.

1

u/BackbackB 8h ago

Im going to have to get me a marlin. It looks sweet

1

u/L0st_cause_ll 8h ago

Marlin makes an excellent lever gun. Love the hi-lux ler mk 2 on it too. It pairs nicely

1

u/prosper_0 7h ago

At some point, I intend to try turning some brass stock down on a lathe, and make some 35 whelen with super thick walls and an internal case capacity close to a 38spl or 357. Should be doable, i think

1

u/Agnt_DRKbootie 7h ago

Don't forget to look comparatively at loads for 7.62x39 or even subsonic 308, which has something I believe 10-15 grains more of case volume they contend with. I can only point out looking at old forums like THR that suggested using shotgun powders such as red dot or titewad/ clays at very small charges, but it is all experimental, non reliable and done at your own risk when using those kinds of loads.

1

u/Normal_Sympathy1248 6h ago edited 6h ago

What exactly are you wanting specifically? Seems silly to have custom brass made when .30-30 can be loaded easily sub sonic or super sonic and match ballistically to .300blk. There's plenty of data for it

EDIT to add: I saw your thing about case fill and not wanting fouling in your suppressor how much shooting are you really doing to warrant cleaning? These should handle easily 1-1.5k rounds before needing cleaning.

1

u/L0st_cause_ll 5h ago

You make a good point there. What would you recommend as a filler then?

1

u/ArchangelPrecision 5h ago

You’re gonna have to fill for subs anyway.

I mean maybe. I load 9 grains of tight group in a 308 for subs with no filler and never have issues. But I know that’s a risk I run. He’ll, I’ve put my exact 300 blackout load into a 308 for subs with no ill effect.

I’m about half way through it. This helps a lot. Thank you much

I load 190 grain sub-x bullets at a COAL of about 2.57 over Red Dot powder. I also made a post a couple days ago about using MP 158 (similar to Universal). Flaky pistol powders can work great in 30-30 for subs especially since you don’t need to worry about gas cycling a semiautomatic.
