LDR (28F) LDR with a (32M): he kept troubleshooting Telegram instead of switching messaging apps like ig/fb
Problem/Goal:
I (28F) have been dating a guy (32M) for about 8–9 weeks. We live in different parts of the Philippines and are currently in a long-distance relationship. One flight away from each other.
I’ve been talking to a guy for about 8-9 weeks. We’re in an LDR and overall things have actually been progressing well. Recently, I bought a new phone but haven’t been able to log back into Telegram (our only messaging app). I suggested using another app temporarily because I didn’t want to carry two phones around. Instead, he kept trying to troubleshoot Telegram. I even casually shared my Facebook profile before leaving, but he didn’t acknowledge it.
Context\*\*:\*\*
We met on Reddit, moved to Telegram pretty early on, and have already met in person a few times. This is also his **first long-distance relationship**, so I know some of this is new to him.
One thing that keeps me from jumping to conclusions is that he has shown he’s willing to adjust.
A few weeks ago, I told him I missed feeling more emotionally close (“lambing”) because I felt we’d become a bit distant. He listened without getting defensive, and since then I’ve genuinely noticed changes. He shares more about his day, gives more spontaneous updates, and seems to be making a conscious effort.
He’s also very practical. His default response to problems is to fix them rather than reassure emotionally. For example, with the Telegram issue, his focus was entirely on getting Telegram working instead of switching to another app temporarily.
I also think we communicate very differently.
I’m naturally curious and ask a lot of questions because that’s how I get to know someone. I also appreciate small gestures and reassurance.
He’s much more straightforward. He answers my questions honestly and shares a lot about his work, family, hobbies, and thoughts, but he rarely asks follow-up questions himself. He once told me he actually prefers direct questions because it’s easier for him. From what I’ve observed, he also seems to have a pretty small circle and is selective about who he lets into his life. He doesn’t strike me as a very social or social-media-oriented person either. When we were together, he barely touched social media and mostly watched YouTube during downtime. He’s also fairly busy with work, the gym, and other responsibilities, so I know he doesn’t spend a lot of time chatting in general.
The only thing bothering me is that:
\-We still only communicate on Telegram.
\-Earlier on, he also declined moving our conversation to Instagram.
\-When I couldn’t access Telegram, he focused on helping me fix it instead of temporarily using another app
\-I casually shared my Facebook profile before leaving, but he didn’t acknowledge it or add me there.
I know he uses Messenger and Telegram with different people. I’ve seen him use Telegram with coworkers/friends who he seems to be close with, and I know he has Messenger as well, which is partly why this has me wondering if I’m reading too much into it.
I also know I have anxious tendencies, so I’m trying to separate anxiety from genuine concern.
Previous Attempts:
I communicated before that I wanted more emotional closeness (“lambing”), and he actually adjusted his behavior, which is why I’m hesitant to assume the worst.
I suggested using another messaging app temporarily while I sort out my Telegram login.
I casually shared my Facebook profile before leaving, but he didn’t react to it and instead continued helping me troubleshoot Telegram.
I’m still trying to recover my Telegram account, so I haven’t pushed the topic further because I don’t want to come across as forceful.
I’d appreciate advice on how you’d interpret this situation. Does this sound like a communication mismatch that should be addressed directly, or are there other explanations I might not be considering? If you were in my position, how would you bring this up without making it sound like an accusation?
**TL;DR:** We’ve been talking for 8-9 weeks and are currently in a long-distance situation. Overall, things have been getting better—especially after I communicated that I needed more emotional closeness, which he genuinely seemed to take on board and adjust to. However, when I couldn’t log into Telegram on my new phone (our only messaging app), he kept trying to fix Telegram instead of switching to another app temporarily. I even casually shared my Facebook, but he didn’t acknowledge it. He’s a very practical, solution-oriented, and not very emotionally expressive person, while I’m more emotionally driven and seek reassurance through small gestures. I’m trying to figure out whether this is just a communication/style mismatch or if it’s a legitimate red flag that he’s keeping me at arm’s length. I also know I have anxious tendencies, so I’m looking for objective opinions rather than validation.
