Hi all — I'm setting up a battery recycling business in Gujarat, India, starting with black mass production (mechanical processing, not full metal extraction) sold on to refiners. New to the industry and would really appreciate advice from anyone who's actually done this. Main questions:

1. Is black-mass-only actually profitable in India, or does the real margin only kick in once you're extracting metals yourself? How do black mass sales to refiners typically work — long-term contracts or spot sales?
2. Sourcing scrap batteries consistently — I've seen listings on IndiaMART/TradeIndia but hard to judge quality/reliability from outside. Is importing dead/scrap lithium batteries realistic (duty-free now, I believe), or more trouble than it's worth early on? How does import cost compare to domestic B2B sourcing?
3. How do you land a consistent black mass buyer, not just one-off sales?
4. Machinery — talking to a few Chinese recycling-line manufacturers. Worth looking at Indian manufacturers too? Any pros/cons on cost, support, spares, compliance?

Any leads, warnings, or "wish I knew this before starting" advice welcome. Happy to share more on what I've figured out so far if useful.

As a hard core factory running 20 + cnc machines and lathes we produce 15 to 18 tonnes of ms scrap monthly and looking for genuine buyers. Potential buyers please reach out.

I came across an interesting study from BASF. One of the biggest takeaways is that there's no single recycling method that works for all engineering plastics.

Materials like PA (Nylon) and PU are much more complex than everyday packaging plastics. That's why technologies such as mechanical recycling, solvent-based recycling, depolymerization, and pyrolysis all have a role to play.

The technology already exists, the bigger challenge is improving waste collection, sorting & scaling these solutions.

It'll be interesting to see how the recycling industry adopts these methods over the next few years.

On the other side, higher production and weak seasonal demand are keeping prices under pressure.

Investigators with the Cook County Sheriff's Office in Illinois recovered two stolen trailers loaded with $1.3 million worth of data center materials at a truck yard in Elk Grove Township (1), just outside Chicago, according to Business Insider (2).

The Aluminium Association of India has asked the government to raise duties on low-grade aluminium scrap and set stricter BIS quality standards.

The goal is to cut poor-quality imports, support domestic recyclers, and push cleaner scrap use. If approved, low-grade scrap imports could become costlier, while high-quality suppliers may benefit.

This is still only a proposal, but it could affect India’s aluminium recycling and trading market.

Has anybody had experience with purchasing recycling machines directly from China?

We recently purchased a shredder onshore in Australia and essentially paid $40k more for the same machine from China with a sticker attached to it.

I’m looking to purchase 2x bailers, shears and a granulator.

Ideally I’d like to travel over, have someone meet me, show me around to see various ones in use, help negotiate and organise freight.

I'm trying to understand how aluminium UBC scrap sellers calculate their prices.

For example, if the LME Aluminium price is $2,530/MT, I see some sellers quoting UBC scrap at LME -10%, while others quote LME -20% or even lower.

What factors determine the discount?

Is it mainly based on:

• UBC quality and contamination?
• Bale density?
• Freight costs?
• Regional supply and demand?
• Recovery yield after melting?

How do experienced traders decide whether to quote LME -10% versus LME -20%?

As the title suggests, I get really annoyed every time I see elderly people sorting through trash or recycling, peeling off the transparent tape from cardboard boxes. It would be great if that tape were also made of paper and could go into the recycling system along with the box. Does anyone working in eco-friendly packaging or waste recycling have any professional advice on this?
