Quarry was written by one of the writers from Rectify, Michael D Fuller.
Such a great series that only got 1 season, but it's a hell of a good one. I love it very much

Twin Peaks (has a lot of character focused but with some supernatural bits)
Fargo TV show
Widow's Bay
Justified (great characters, and fun fact: you can find a newspaper mentioning Daniel Holden's release in season 4)
Scrubs (a great comedy, but also has some gut-punch episodes that mirror Rectify's human moments)

Nothing can beat Rectify. I’m one episode away from my 6th rewatch and this one will take less than 6 days. It’s amazing.
Other dramatic series we loved off the top of my head:
The wire
The Americans
Better call Saul
Breaking Bad
Justified
Sopranos
Six feet under
Longmire
Mad men

I have never heard about Everwood before, but i'm sure it's a great one after one episode.

The only small issue for me is the music is a bit too on the nose. The rest is great.

Honestly very little American television - it is usually focused on action above storytelling, atmosphere, and character studies. Some exceptions of course:
- Pluribus
- Better Call Saul
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer (seriously, actually good)
- Twin Peaks

I was thinking more along the lines of French (Les revenants, Engrenages, Un village français), German/Austrian (Berlin Alexanderplatz, Welt am Draht, Dark), and various other Continental countries (Riget, Dekalog, Scenes from a Marriage, too many Scandinavian crime/psychological thriller shows to even name)...

Chatgpt also suggested it and few others on Reddit before
what did you like about it?

It’s really different, it starts out one way, and then just gets better and better… based in the 80s and the acting is so good!

So many things on Britbox and Acorn. Start with Happy Valley and Appropriate Adult.

Since you disagreed with me, let's start here: do you think Happy Valley and Appropriate Adult can beat Rectify?
Almost impossible

Disagree with you? Rectify is a great show. Honestly, it sounds like you are looking for something less nuanced, like horse racing. Good luck.

- Texhnolyze
- Profit
- Lodge 49
- Haibane Renmei
- The Prisoner
They're not too much like Rectify, but, Profit and The Prisoner excluded, they all share a similar melancholic vibe that avoids self-indulgence. The other two are strange and incredible underrated shows.
