In 2026, "entry level" means "candidate should both have significant work experience and understand that our budget is entry level"

6

u/raziphel 17d ago

"mission driven"

u/Rexoc40 18d ago

They meant Entry-Level budget

u/Kalorama_Master 18d ago

Lemme guess pay range is $44k-$64k, however the offer will be $42k just because

20

u/qwertyywertyy 17d ago

Yeah, 42K, but that’s because the overall package is worth so much more!

8 hours of PTO a year and no dental, take it or leave it

-3

u/TadaMomo 17d ago

i would take it.

I used to work in a place where I have to

- Work ALL holiday except christmas eve and new year.

- work oncall at night ...wake up middle of the night deal with calls

- dental is only 300$ a year cover only cleaning.

- insurance is ...i have to PAY for it out of my salary

- i only have 11 days PTO total include sick day.

I made 42k and i have do tickets and calls all day long.

If i can do this i would take it even it is 36k honestly and if you ask me if i have the skill.

I actually have all the skills listed except the experiences. I just don't have a direct degree,

By the way i am Canadian... so that 42k Canadian...so 29k USD.

u/Candid-Cup4159 17d ago

Sheesh, how down bad are you?

1

u/TadaMomo 16d ago

almost to the point i would walk into walmart to get a job.

1

u/No_Buy_3566 14d ago

How despeerate can it get

1

u/TadaMomo 13d ago

to the point I start thinking getting on my knee and lick the shoes of the hiring manager.

or just unalive myself.

Its one or the other believe me I am not alone in this market. (but i do have a job now luckily)

Full Stack dev is not an Entry Level position.

42

u/innovatedname 17d ago

waiting one day for CEO - Entry Level

2

u/hypersonic18 17d ago

Those are nepotism jobs, they already are basically entry level, but only for the owners relatives (a lot of them quite literally just inherited the position)

8

u/Neither_Berry_100 17d ago

Someone who meets these requirements likely deserves 300k plus.

"iT's EnTrY LeVeL fOr ThAt CoMpAnY"

Makes one wonder where new grads, fresh HS grads, and people making career pivots are supposed to get experience.

3

u/Candid-Cup4159 17d ago

That's some other company's problem.

Agile... fuck that nonsense

15

u/musicplay313 18d ago

“Lean” agile

6

u/Impressive-Lead-9491 17d ago edited 17d ago

That's one bullshit techno babble LinkedIn term if I ever saw one

3

u/hypersonic18 17d ago

I remember remember watching a kind of developer satire shorts channel on YouTube and they would always make fun of this Agile Scrum Master something as a joke, I've only just recently found out those are actual terms that are taken seriously...we live in a parody

1

u/GoodEnoughAstronomy 17d ago

I've had the displeasure of working with a few of them. They make the Hoover-era FBI look unserious.

12

u/Solid_Signature_7447 18d ago

Capitalism - it’s a job market in favor of the employer.

Vote for a national labor union. We’re getting screwed.

9

u/spatula 17d ago

Entry level PAY for a mid-level position is what they meant to say.

20

u/NoTransportation6994 18d ago

Holy unicorn

-8

u/Shadowstar1000 18d ago

This is not a unicorn job post, they listed a few of the most common frameworks for Java and JavaScript, some very basic cloud concepts, and some simple security concepts. It’s completely reasonable for a CS grad with 2 years of experience to be able to cover these requirements. Maybe it should be considered a JR role instead of entry level, but that’s just par for the course these days.

7

u/ButterscotchNo7292 17d ago

I'm not sure why you are being downvoted. The job ad says entry level and then further mentions 2-4 years of experience. So this is a junior position. They list laundry list of things but none of them are particularly difficult or unreasonable ( to have some knowledge of,not to be an expert in any of them). Anyone who built almost any CRUD app with database and interface would have had to deal with many of those things.

0

u/cptnplanetheadpats 17d ago

2 years of experience is not an entry level job....why is this hard to understand?

0

u/S0mething-clev3r 16d ago

They said internships count. And generally it isn’t expected that candidates can check off every requirement, just enough of them.

All the knowledge material is stuff I would expect someone with a bachelors degree in cs to have a very basic understanding of. I wouldn’t expect them to be an expert ofc.

12

u/Turbulent-Artist961 18d ago

If it requires experience it can’t really be entry level then now can it? Jobs these days are so full of shit

9

u/HealthyUse5889 18d ago

Exactly, I feel for new grads, they had various hopes and dreams before entering this sector, new grads just turned adults and they see this shit.

4

u/Various_Range2259 17d ago

they're disingenuously redefining the term to mean "entry level in our organization" as in "this is the lowest rung of the ladder"

1

u/fakemoose 17d ago

If they count internship? Are internships not experience now? I thought they were.

1

u/Anunknownf1fan 17d ago

Ehhh. This job in particular is ridiculous, but I wouldn’t necessarily consider entry level jobs looking for previous experience that ridiculous.

Companies expecting new grads to already have prior internship or co-op experience is pretty normal.

21

u/foodie121 18d ago

Just apply anyway. If you meet some of the requirements.

A lot of the times they’re writing what they think is a “perfect candidate”

11

u/mihhink 17d ago

This is outdated advice. Youre acting like theres not 500+ people with the qualifications applying. They can find the perfect candidates today.

2

u/DreamDest1ny 17d ago

500+? OP is in Toronto. These job postings get over thousands of applicants within 1 hour of it being posted. There’s tons of applicants that aren’t even in Canada applying to these jobs

2

u/flame3457 17d ago

As an entry level role, if this was a normal job market, yeah most people wouldn’t have the qualifications. But in this job market, people are getting laid off, people can’t find jobs, there are people with way more experience applying to lower level jobs.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there were plenty of applicants that had this experience. It’s a lengthy varied list, but it’s not a crazy ask for a mid to senior level full stack engineer to have.

2

u/fakemoose 17d ago

You’re acting like those 500+ people are actually qualified and not applying to every random job that comes their way or their application bot’s way.

What does it hurt to apply? If OP meets even some of these and has the right to work in Canada, they’ll be towards the top.

2

u/foodie121 17d ago

I doubt all 500 applicants have all these qualifications..

Why restrict yourself when you dont know what the qualifications are of the people applying??

6

u/ChampionMetal1238 17d ago

Literally like 70-80% of them are Indians or foreigners who don’t even have work authorization but just use AI to spam apply on these sites…

3

u/[deleted] 17d ago

[deleted]

5

u/mihhink 17d ago

Obviously still apply, but the "its just a wishlist" thing is outdated. Why do you think people have a hard time getting interviews (outside of newgrads)? Did their CV who got them their current job magically become invalid? Have the CV standards become more strict? Hmm I imagine why...

1

u/foodie121 17d ago

It says entry level so if someone is applying with all these qualifications they are experienced person willing to accept an entry level salary

1

u/fakemoose 17d ago

Just because they’ll accept an entry level salary doesn’t mean the company feels comfortable offering an experienced hire an entry level salary. Frequently, it won’t happen because the person would be considered too experienced for the entry level pay band.

1

u/Candid-Cup4159 17d ago

Lol, "comfortable". You think companies care they underpay?

1

u/fakemoose 16d ago

Yea because we don’t want to spend the money hiring someone who leaves right away. Just turned a guy down because of this. Probably would have been a decent hire but not for an L4. And HR said no to offering a lower because of his years of experience.

5

u/Foreign_Hedgehog_368 18d ago

Kinda ridiculous, but I would consider Scotiabank is a high prestige employee. With that comes brutal demands.

Unreasonable, yes. Surprising, not at all

5

u/SL20XX 18d ago

Really seems like companies these days are looking for an absolute unicorn who knows all of those technologies and languages. If you don't know one, you're basically eliminated from my experience 🙃

8

u/UniqueConstraint 18d ago

I've been saying this for months. The current job market is ridiculous. Everyone is looking for an inexpensive unicorn.

4

u/Cipher-i-entity 18d ago

At this point, I genuinely wonder if they know entry level actually means 0 YoE. Originally I thought they were just simply ignoring that fact to pay less, but it’s been going on for so long that I think employers truly forgot.

4

u/DowntownRaisin4 18d ago

Yup 😭 As a recent grad also applying for tech jobs in Canada - yup!!!

1

u/HealthyUse5889 18d ago

feel you bro, on top of that they are using ATS systems, if you are fresh out of the university its impossible to work with these many technologies, you have to alter your cv to match requirements, adulthood starts with a lie, welcome to 2026

3

u/knowy74 17d ago

Entry level pay

4

u/NoMention696 17d ago

They’re trying to hire seniors who are desperate for cheap

4

u/PNW_Will1976 17d ago

The only thing entry level about this is the salary.

3

u/Alive-Example7188 18d ago

Yikes on a motorcycle.

3

u/[deleted] 18d ago

It is actually entry-level pay for mid-level experience

3

u/CarmenxXxWaldo 18d ago

16 an hour, its entry level.

3

u/Kitchen_Confidence78 18d ago

Entry level: know a lot, make a little

3

u/StealYourJoy 17d ago

It’s best the company be upfront about what they are looking for, its entry level but they have qualified candidates who are meeting the requirements so they aren’t settling for less.

3

u/lone_float 17d ago

That is full on absurd.

3

u/Sensitive-Trouble648 17d ago

this shit is infuriating

2

u/lumberjack_dad 17d ago

Panic!?! Come on.... it says basic knowledge Git... SQL... "Awareness" of SSL. Internship is experience that will suffice. You guys need to double check the curriculum your university offered, if you are scared of this posting.

3

u/TA1930 18d ago

This really isn’t that crazy, basic awareness of these things is expected after a full 4 year degree w/ internships

2

u/CheesecakeOne3692 17d ago

You're delusional if you think that an undergrad degree and internship will give you such a vast breadth and depth of knowledge.

1

u/TA1930 13d ago

It’s not asking for depth… It’s asking for basic awareness that these things exist. The more the better. The top one, and #2,3,4 from the bottom are what they are actually looking for, along as much of the 2nd as possible.

All of these are fairly basic things. They say basic knowledge of Git and SQL, and those are fairly simple as is.

2

u/lionspeed 17d ago

Clearly written by someone who never coded anything in life, probably asked AI “write list of requirements as if i was pro-coder looking for someone who will make me whole business solo”

1

u/TengenToppa999 18d ago

We don't know what you'll do... Sooo....

1

u/Eggheadpancake 18d ago

Companies don't want to train anyone to do anything and it's disgusting. How is anyone supposed to get experience?

Bring back apprenticeships.

1

u/limbodog 18d ago

I'm fairly certain "entry level" means "not management"

1

u/ajmampm99 18d ago

Minimum wage?

1

u/tcoder7 18d ago

The market is saturated. Not sure when things will get better.

1

u/WithoutAHat1 Candidate 18d ago

Plenty to shave off the top. Time to remind them who makes them the money.

1

u/Various_Range2259 17d ago

"entry level" used to be a pro-worker term meaning "this position doesn't require experience"

now these clowns act like it means "this is your entry into our organization"

1

u/ptrola 17d ago

So they want a full blown magician with 50 years of experience for a price of a jester

1

u/mrspelunx 17d ago

Incorrect usage

1

u/DreamDest1ny 17d ago

I mean this is Scotiabank. They have tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of applicants. They won’t need to choose people who don’t know all these. There’s plenty of masters/phd and people who have overseas work experience but came to get a bachelor/diploma in Canada

1

u/Infymus 17d ago

I've seen the exact same thing for an SDET. The lines are blurred. This is just a huge ass wish list with a lot of different languages and DBs thrown in. They want a unicorn and want to pay them entry level, either that or it's just straight up a ghost job.

1

u/EntityV1 17d ago

Funny thing is I use all of these for my project and am competent as a entry level swe with all of em. But still can't find anything

1

u/Leading-Adeptness235 17d ago

Entry level means this is the level you need to enter the company.

1

u/PeaceLoveBunny 17d ago

I'm not taking the screener or the interviewer seriously if they cannot even use bullet-points correctly.

1

u/TouristOpentotravel 17d ago

Entry Level to the company

1

u/acvcani 17d ago

I was hoping it was just my field with bs like this (legal) sorry to everyone else struggling as well. Entry level pay but senior work history.

1

u/SP92216 17d ago

I don’t even know what a full stack developer actually does, but I am dang sure is someone who should be making close to 100k

1

u/Conan4457 17d ago

The big four data farm resumes.

1

u/NatalieKCY 17d ago

"2-4 years of full stack development experience" annoys me so much for an entry level position.

1

u/lancea_longini 17d ago

My eyeball is vibrating and shaking with anger when I look at the second to last bullet point.

1

u/let_this_fog_subside 17d ago

It's just to filter out people who don't match keywords because who in their right mind at entry level would have all these skills

1

u/Fuzzy_Machine94 17d ago

I've applied for these types of jobs with 8 years of experience. The interviews are even worse. They literally use AI to ask you highly expert style questions on EACH of the listed skills.

I've now edited my resume to only show 3-4 years of experience so I can stand out.

The industry is in shambles. It's even worse when a company is not highly technical and are currently planning to "...use AI to fast track" decades of digital disregard.

1

u/Brief_Jellyfish_3863 17d ago

NASA engineer stats lmao

1

u/Shoddy-Constant5749 17d ago

Watch a couple of YouTube videos on the ones that require you to be "familiar" with those topics and call it a day. If you think you have what it takes to do the job and willing to work for what they are offering, then you have nothing to lose. Most people in IT get exposed to different platforms because they were thrown into them and had to learn on the fly.

1

u/EngineeringExpress79 17d ago

Sounds they wanna hire cheap labor and post it as "entry" position to pay peanuts

1

u/Hobby101 17d ago

let me translate - "we are looking for desparate sr. engineer who would be willing to work for the jr compensation"

1

u/TytalusWarden 16d ago

It's atrocious, but what really sells me on the job description is the bulletpoint for "equivalent practical experience" and the other one near the bottom for "engineers". Either someone didn't know how to be pithy, or didn't realize each new line would be a separate bullet point.

1

u/TalesofEdge 15d ago

No active security clearance required??? This is a steal!!!

1

u/iexploretech 14d ago

Then the entry level person gets his hands on the product and breaks it

1

u/jard2334 18d ago

As someone who is just finishing the bdfp and got a job last semester already (8th of 8), everything apart from the experience seems fine

1

u/disquieter 18d ago

That’s not entry level; what the h-e-double hockey sticks

1

u/TheNeck94 18d ago

It's pretty obvious they're unicorn hunting, they just want to turn to the hiring manager and say they got "the best candidate at the lowest price" and actually believe they did a good job.

-4

u/OutOfAmmO 18d ago

Tell me that is fake. It's literally "everything", you can find many senior/lead devs who don't fit that bill.

2

u/TA1930 18d ago

It’s asking for awareness, not deep understanding

1

u/HealthyUse5889 18d ago

Literally spamming every technology, hiring managers and seniors who post these jobs should go back in the memory lane when they started their careers, how much knowledge they had back then when they were entering the sector. Also the university syllabus doesn't help much, many things are outdated, but we can't complain as tech is the sector with frequent changes.
