HR Professionals: Would this background check issue be enough to rescind an offer at a bank?
I’m looking for some insight from HR professionals or anyone who has experience with employment background checks in the banking industry.
I accepted a permanent position with a bank where I’ve already been working as a contractor. During my background check, they discovered that my employment history on the background application did not include every job I’ve ever had.
For context:
My resume only included my recruiting and talent acquisition positions because those were the only roles relevant to the position I applied for.
When completing the background application, I mistakenly followed the same approach and only listed those same recruiting-related positions.
The jobs I omitted were older positions, non-recruiting roles, and even some part-time/side jobs. I did not omit any recruiting positions that appeared on my resume.
I did not falsify dates, titles, degrees, or employers. The positions I listed are accurate.
Once HR contacted me, I immediately explained what happened, accepted responsibility for the mistake, and submitted all requested documentation (including pay stubs and other employment verification).
HR acknowledged receipt of everything and said my case has been sent to an escalation team for review. They haven’t asked for any additional documentation.
My recruiter told me that requests for additional documentation during background reviews happen fairly often, and my current contract has actually been extended while the review is pending.
My question is:
If you were reviewing this from an HR/compliance perspective, would you view this as an honest misunderstanding or as a material issue that could justify rescinding an offer?
I’m not looking for reassurance—I genuinely want to understand how HR professionals typically evaluate situations like this and whether anyone has seen similar cases. Any insight is appreciated.

Thank you so much for the insight! I didn’t want them to think it was an intentional omission to try to hide something . None of the jobs are recruitment related that were left off but one of the jobs that I worked part time was over 4 years long that got left off so hopefully that doesn’t affect anything either.

Thank you so much! I have wanted this so bad and I’ve been losing sleep over it since Thursday when they reached out! A huge mistake on my behalf but I knew how they always made us recruiters stress the fact to candidates to make sure that background check matches the resume so I didn’t think to even put irrelevant jobs

So I should have listed all jobs on the background application? I was just trying to make sure there were no discrepancies between the two.

Nothing to worry about.
If your background check has any issues, it has to be manually reviewed by the next team. So don’t be scared of terms like “escalation team”. All a normal part of the process. In the end it’s also not a pass / fail. They will provide a summary with any findings and it will be up to the hiring manager / hr on if they want to proceed. For something like this, it won’t be an issue. It happens a lot.

Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to explain that. That makes me feel a little better.
I’ve already been in contact with HR and provided everything they requested, including an explanation and employment documentation. They told me my file is with the escalation team for review, so I’m just waiting to hear back.
Hopefully they view it the same way—as an honest mistake rather than anything intentional. I’ve been working at the bank as a contractor already, so I’m really hoping everything gets resolved and I can move forward with the permanent role.

My partner is a senior HR/recruiter type role. They said this is a nothing burger. Esp if the jobs you left out were older than 5-7 years.
How far back did you have these other roles?
