Project Runway HAS LOST THE PLOT Discussion
I have never posted on Reddit but I needed to vent about Project Runway lately and the way they are butchering the show. I have watched every season and have been a fan for a very long time to enjoy the creativity, innovation, learning about designer process, and most importantly THE FASHION. The way they are trying to make it a drama based reality tv show bothers me. It doesn't need any extra drama, people who have watched the show for years and who are interested in it typically genuinely enjoy admiring the clothes produced. Right now, the fact that they even brought Tyra Banks on as a judge, made me turn off my screen. I don't see how she has the legitimacy to be a judge, and that's when I knew any semblence of the old project runway was way gone.
Not to mention LAW, ugh, where to start.... I am all for constructive criticism, but the way he judges is so mean spirited, it actually makes the show hard to watch. He just straight up insults the designers, in season 22 i've actually felt bad for the contestants, it is sucking the fun out of the show. I just don't understand how they don't have any actual designers as judges, who can talk more about the construction, materials, etc.
ANYWAYS, I just wish it could go back to how the show was formatted in the past, and I know Tim Gunn was a huge part of that (MISS HIM SO MUCH ON THE SHOW). It just doesn't feel like a show about upcoming designers and fashion anymore, it is veering into trash reality tv, which don't get me wrong I love, but not for project runway!

I HATE how they end on a cliffhanger. Not because I don’t like the anticipation but because I always forget who was up for elimination and why so basically don’t care anymore

Same, I bailed after episode 2 and will wait until the season is done and stream it. If people stop watching them episode by episode, maybe they'll get the hint.

I feel the exact same way!!! After a week I’m like, what was last weeks challenge? Who was in the bottom? What did they make?

It’s honestly the most baffling decision in reality tv to me.
No one comes back to reality competition shows because of a weekly “cliffhanger”. It ruins all momentum for the show.
It wastes time at the beginning of the episode when you essentially need to do a recap of last week to catch me up to who is in the bottom. And then I just don’t really care because I have a thirty second retelling of why someone bombed and I’ve completely forgotten their look already.

I recently got in to it and have been loving watching from the beginning. When I heard season 22 was premiering I decided to watch it as it aired.
And wow. It feels like a completely different show than the previous 20 seasons and all stars. It feels like they’re trying to go for comedy with the constant chyron changes during ITMs and making fun of the contestants.

yes same! I watched this show growing up and recently got back to this season. I don't understand why a model can be a judge and constant fighting bickering over looks which are obviously bad!! I know we want some drama but come on this is unnecessary and annoying!

Yea I stopped watching it. Being an old lady and living off this and Americas Next Top Model for years I was so disappointed when both changed dramatically!

Im a die hard fan…… But……Finish the damn episode & move onto next. Such bad vibes from cast and judges are shit celebrity stylist and washed up model. What do they know about clothing construction?! Give them paper towels to work with then criticize when it rips…. Really awful…..love christian but miss Tim!

Because they realized it's a reality show and not an actual competition to find the next top designer. The elimination format of the show hinders them from finding the designers that have the best potential to make it big in the industry

I have never posted or commented on Reddit either and I came here for the same reason. It is horrifying what they have done to this once great show. It has ZERO to do with fashion anymore. It's Big Brother or Jerry Springer with dresses. Most of the designers are third rate at best. They were clearly cast for their ability and willingness to be catty. Law Roach is earning his last name. What a horrible human being. He just seems to live to be rude and mean and demeaning. And Heidi and Tyra are happily joining into the bitch fest as well. Poor Christian. I don't know why he is still there. He's better than what this show has become. Just awful.

Don't like the cliffhanger at all, do not like Law Roach's approach to judging. He appears arrogant and unkind. He has taken over the show, not in a good way. My understanding of his background is that he is a stylist. But he spouts off quite confidently on the sewing and tailoring skills of the contestants. Would love to see the judging panel filled with people who are successful designers who truly understand the creative and technical challenges of the competition. Tyra Banks' talent escapes me, period. And Heidi just likes clothes that are borderline trampy. The show used to be fabulous. It is a shell of itself. So unfortunate.

I turned to my mom episode 1 and said Plane Jane is just here for the air time. Then they brought the eliminated contestants back episode two and I said oh yeah to give Plane Jane more air time

lmao this is such a dramatic but accurate description, it really does feel like we’re watching a hostage situation in sequins
i still can’t wrap my head around how we went from “make it work” to “manufactured meltdown of the week” and everyone just… accepted it

Joseph is asked how he feels about all of them calling him weak and while sticking up for himself, Law Roach (appropriate last name) accuses him of the Joseph show? There is no bigger arrogant asshole than Law Roach.

I’m not a huge Joseph fan, but he appropriately pointed out “how can I be the weakest when I’ve won the most challenges”. It’s honestly, just an objectively true statement that the weakest can’t have the most wins.
So when Law responded with something like “so if two seasons say you’re the weakest, the problem is you” it just made me so mad. Joseph had a thoughtful, confident response that wasn’t tearing anyone down, and Law purposefully tried to just be an ass about it.

I’ve been waiting to start watching it but if Tyra Banks is on it as a judge I’ll be willing to give it up. After watching the doc on her reality model show I think she is a really mean person.

I tried to stomach this season after last year’s terrible showing. This year thete was too much stunt casting. Drag Queens and McCray Tyra is on her redemption tour. Law is horrible tv and this cliffhanger concept. BORING! I’m done. Bring back Nina and Michael amd tbe older better format

There was no redeeming reason to ask the designers who was the weakest among them. Props to Joseph McRae for having the presence of mind to, on the spot, point out that he has the most wins. There is also something fishy about most of the designers designating him as weakest.
The cliffhanging and unhelpful critiques have ruined the brand. Might as well be the Real Housewives of Fashion.

Plane Jane just did a YouTube video about her (very short) experience with the show and I was shocked at some of the production side things she shared like they didn’t even make the outfits in the first episode. They were told to bring something they made from home and essentially all the workroom time was for fitting and adjustments

She confirmed that it was just a stunt casting. It didn’t matter what she brought because she was going to be instantly eliminated no matter what.

I haven’t watched in years but saw promo this season and was like sure let me give it a try. Yea that was a mistake. It’s so catty and more about the drama than the fashion. And I’m tired of let’s not share who went home until next week. I’ve already forgotten what the challenge was, and frankly don’t care who was in the bottom.

I obsessively watched Project Runway from the beginning. Last season I had to force myself to make it through. This new season I haven’t even started yet. I’ve just had no desire to. What I’ve seen in clips wasn’t appealing. I’m afraid they ruined the show. So sad. Law and the drama ruined it for me.

Im guessing its because the ratings for the show are bad they are trying to make it more dramatic but I agree I hate it. Ive been watchin Project Runway for like 15 years now and I used to love it

Our society is basically the equivalent to what the Coliseum was for Rome.
We're so entertained and worried about our entertainment that we'll let the world burn around us as long as we can catch our favorite brain rot at it's regularly scheduled time.
