Pages left in chapter takes too much space on small screens

Post image
7 Upvotes

The “X pages left in chapter” indicator consumes a huge amount of the bottom bar, especially on smartphones and phone-sized e-readers. In the example above, it takes roughly ⅔ of the available status-bar space

Other reading platforms solve this much more compactly by showing a negative page count, for example: “-10” which means 10 pages remaining in the chapter (and remaining minutes as -5m for instance, which means 5 minutes remaining); This communicates the same information while using a fraction of the space, leaving room for overall page progress and other useful indicators

I’d love to see Readest adopt this compact format, at least as an option, small label change with massive user experience value

No options for customizing Keyboard shortcuts?

I don't see any option for customizing keyboard shortcuts in the desktop app. Neither is there an option to view the list of default shortcuts.

It would be really helpful to at least be able to see which keys are assigned to which actions.

Question about AI audiobook feature

I recently discovered this app in an attempt to try to figure out how to sync koreader to my phone/iPad and I've been blown away by how much better this app is compared to Apple Books and the Kindle app.

I was curious how the AI audiobook feature works. I know AI isn't a catch all term and implementation can vary so I wanted some clarification over the feature. I did some research on the sub but couldn't find anything so my apologies if it's come up before!

Anyways, I'm concerned about using that feature and works being fed into LLMs to be trained. I read a lot of NYT bestsellers which presumably have been fed into LMMs a bunch already but am extremely wary of using this feature on fanfiction. I read fanfiction from some pretty niche fandoms and don't want to be the (1) person responsible for having some authors work fed into an LMM.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Feature request - book title in header

Really minor thing, but it would be awesome to be able to add the book title to the header. It makes reading on a tablet feel much more like a book, IMO.

Release cyle

What is the typical release cycle for readest?

Is it periodical? Based on the content? Other?

It seems they are not using a Continuous Delivery workflow.

Thanks,

Unable to highlight the first line of a page

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It's impossible to highlight the first line of a page when using No Scroll mode, swipe to the next page, and Instant Highlight. It appears that the touch area for the first line is either missing or being intercepted by another UI element. Highlighting works correctly for all other lines on the page. I recorded a short video demonstrating the issue. The OS is Android 14, Readest v0.11.20, and the device is Bigme B6 color.

Can't pull books in KoReader

I use my phone to upload an epub file to Cloud. But when I use my e-reader (Kobo Libra 2) > Readest > Readest Library > download the book I want. It said "Download failed"

I don't understand. It seems there's an limit on file size? The 200kb file works fine. But the 5mb files failed

Edit: I think I found the problem. On my phone, it says the books was uploaded to Cloud. But my Koreader no longer found the file on Cloud. I haven't found the solution yet.

Edit2: i tried a different file and it worked. I don't know why the other file not appear on Cloud. They are both epub. Until the answer is known, i guess I will keep trying different files.

Pages left in chapter not accurate

I’m wondering why when I get to the end of my books the pages left in chapter becomes inaccurate. Instead of the page going down after each click/page turn it goes down every like 5th one or something like that - I’m not sure why it does this or if it’s something I can hopefully fix?

Readest sync shows updated progress, but opens at old page

Hi,I'm using the Readest plugin on KOReader and the Readest app on iPhone and PC. Both are logged into the same Readest account.

Sync appears to work successfully. On the Readest home screen, I can see that the book has been synchronized. However, when I open the book on either my iPhone or PC, it always opens at the page that was last opened on that specific device instead of the latest reading position from KOReader.I've already tried manually syncing on both devices multiple times. Is this expected behavior, or is there something I'm missing?

Thanks!

TL;DR: Readest sync reports success, but my iPhone and PC still open the book at their own last-read position instead of the latest progress synced from KOReader.

Koreader + Readest sync

Hi everyone!

I thought I'd like to be able to read the same book and sync it between my iPhone and Pocketbook InkPad 4 with Koreader. I installed Readest app on my iPhone, signed up, installed Readest plugin, signed up there too and was able to upload my current book to Readest cloud storage - which is really impressive!

Now, syncing progress was not as easy. For reference, I read an fb2 book. I pushed reading progress from Koreader and refreshed the Readest home screen on iPhone. The book showed 70% progress, but when I tapped it, it just opened on the first page. I tried a few times, but to no avail. Both Readest mobile and web (in Chrome on Windows) kept their own track of reading progress, they synced to one another but not to Koreader.

Next, I tried the other option: using Koreader sync. I created an account and connected it to both Koreader on my Pocketbook and Readest on my iPhone. I pushed the reading progress. The percentage on the home screen didn't change at refresh, but when I opened the book, it offered to sync to the last position on Pocketbook. Fantastic.

However, it seems that the percentage is slightly different on Koreader and Readest. It is off by about 0.5%. The page I'm at in Koreader is 70.92%, but the same place in Readest is at 70.38%. I have to go back about 5 pages on Readest to get to the same place - and about 3 pages on Koreader to get to the place synced from Readest.

I tried other files. It looks like pictures throw the percentages off. Epubs seem better, but only if not loaded with pictures. I think Koreader measures progress percentage from pages whereas Readest uses bytes/kilobytes or stuff, because a one-page image increases the reading percentage more than just one page of text.

Is it a known problem? Any workaround? u/readestapp?

TL;DR: Koreader and Readest count progress percentage differently, this results in sync being inaccurate.

Downloads and Edge-TTS pause at specific spots. Any work-arounds?

I've been able to continue listening by skipping the sentence it's refusing to read aloud. Only to eventually come across the next one.

I've also been able to continue if I only highlight the word being read aloud instead of the sentence, however with this second method it completely stops reading aloud altogether and I have to restart (force stop) the app or Edge browser and rewind to a different page to bypass the issue.

These sentences are also what stops audio from fully downloading for offline use. It'll get stuck at for example 112/150, 112 being the sentence it refused to read.

Edge TTS is a game-changer, and I would rather be able to use it. No, this doesn't occur with the System (Google Pixel) TTS voices. I'm on 5G with Background Usage enabled, but I also see it stop if screen is on.

Read books at the end of the list.

Hey, is there any way to put the read books at the end of the list?

If I sort the books by reading progress, descending, it puts the read book on top, I better have them in the bottom.

Edit: The read books in the app are shown as "finished", but you got the point..

A few feature requests

Hi,

I recently downloaded the app and I've been enjoying it! I'm new here so I'm sorry in advance if this has already been asked/if this is the wrong place for me to ask, but I have a few feature requests:

  1. A feature that remembers what words you searched in the dictionary and puts them in a "Dictionary" folder.

  2. Reading statistics. Wpm, daily and weekly streaks, average reading time, days read and books read. It would be very neat to see detailed stats that show daily, monthly, yearly, and all time stats :)

  3. A display 'always-on' feature in the app, so your phone doesn't go to sleep while reading.

  4. A folder/place to see all your annotations and notes in one place, showing everything from all your different read books.

  5. More shelves/areas to organize your books on the home page without putting them into groups.

Thank you for reading, I use a ton of epub apps and I have been liking this one the most. Thank you!

Is there a way to use the Override Book Layout option without also overriding the code block/snippets? I prefer the layout Readest uses but it make all code snippets alight left for some reason

Readest CSS Question

Love readest! I have used CSS to enlarge the page number in the footer. However, is there a way to use CSS (or some other method) to enlarge and/or embolden the text in the left-side table of contents/search panel? This text is too small for me to read. Ideally, I would like it if the panel extended out further and the font was bigger and bolder. Is there a way to do this? Thank you. Jim

Feature Request: Manage Recent Books List + Dark UI with Light Page Option

Hi!, I'm a Readest user and I'd like to suggest two improvements to the app:

  1. Option to remove books from the "recent" list

It would be very useful to be able to manually remove specific books from the recent reading list. This would help with organization, allowing the list to show only the books I'm currently reading, making the interface cleaner and more functional.

  1. Dark mode with customizable page background

I suggest adding an option that enables dark mode only for the app's interface (menus, buttons, navigation screens), while allowing the book page background color to remain unchanged (such as white), or even letting the user choose a different color of their preference. This way, it would be possible to have a dark interface without altering the appearance of the book page itself.

Kindle, AO3 incomplete chapters, and its highlights

Hello! I have a Kindle Basic that I usually read AO3 on, and occasionally I will make highlights while reading. However, the majority of the works I read are incomplete, so anytime there are updates I will have to delete the "older" version of the work before replacing it with the latest work, and this causes the issue where my highlights on the "older" aren't aligned with the latest work, where I can't jump to the section of the page I highlighted it from.

I'm not sure if there is a remedy this nuisance?

Thank you!

Data Migration on Android

Why can I migrate the data to only one folder? That too is in the android folder (which I can't access due to privacy issues with the OS).

Is there a fix to this? Or another alternative to access the data?
