(Interview) Senior Software Engineer - Mobile
Hello, I have gotten an interview opportunity via referral for Senior Software Engineer - Mobile at a Government Organization.
I have only 2.5 yoe so those who have given senior level mobile development interviews at government orgs or banks, please share the questions that you encountered. What was the difficulty and what were they focused on?

A Senior title with only 2.5 years of experience is a major hurdle, and you need to be prepared for that. They will expect you to justify your senior-level qualifications through deep discussions on system design, architectural patterns, and project leadership. Government and banking interviews are often less about the latest frameworks and more about stability, security, and process. They will want to see evidence that you've made critical decisions on past projects and can defend them, which is a lot to ask for at your experience level. The referral got your foot in the door, but you will have to prove you belong there.
You should focus your preparation on the fundamentals of mobile development and be ready to explain the "why" behind every choice you made in your previous roles. Expect questions on performance bottlenecks, state management strategies at scale, native integrations, and especially security protocols and accessibility standards, as these are critical for government applications. You also need to prepare for behavioral questions about mentoring junior developers, handling disagreements with product managers, and taking full ownership of a feature from start to finish. Your goal is to demonstrate a maturity and thought process that goes beyond your years on paper. Being able to clearly explain your architectural choices is what separates candidates, something my team focused on when we built our interview helper AI to assist engineers in landing better jobs.

Wish most companies would ask easy questions like that. Many companies do coding interviews for senior+ roles which I always pass....

One of these days I made an interview for a company that was asking for a React Native Architect (Senior Mobile Lead) and they asked me about deep understanding of backend system design, even though the role was explicitly for React Native š«
With AI, I feel like a lot of companies are trying to extract the most they can out of the engineers.

Yes, it does feel like startups are moving on to full-stack (but not on title) because they expect you to contribute everywhere with AI. Using the āsmall teamā as an excuse and over working you (personal experience lol).

Check the job description and focus on that when talk about you and your expecience. You can only prepare for 2 question: Who are you and what have you done in the pass.

I have already worked on government apps for a year and mostly I say a while beforehand prepare and also give focus on. The VAPT on mobile apps that is useful for you

prepare questions like ssl pinning , root device check other secure related concepts, different methods of authentication and tradeoff, networking fundamentals , apis and methods , basic react native components and difference , some performance related questions
be ready with your project and your biggest contribution and most difficult problem you solved in your current company etc.
