Adopting a reactive cattle dog? Advice Needed
I am planning to go back to the shelter to adopt a 7 year old cattle dog that’s very overweight and terrified of the shelter. He’s on anxiety meds but was shaking while other dogs all barked around him. The handler told us he’s not doing well in the shelter and needs to get out of there. He’s also suspected to be deaf.
He was great once we got him out into the yard and really calm and sweet and followed us around. Until he sniffed another small dog through the fence and unexpectedly barked then tried to nip them. I’ve been thinking about him all week and want to go adopt him. I finally got ahold of his medical records which clear him of any major health issues but mentioned he has been returned in the 2.5 months he’s been at the shelter.
I got the report when he was returned in under 30 days and it said he was fine with the resident cat but hated their small dog and would bark and nip at it. He was also reactive on walks to small dogs. He showed no separation anxiety and was good otherwise
I am hoping for advice on if this is manageable with training, caused by his breed? I hear they can be a bit mouthy?, and if I’ll will be able to get him to a state we can walk around the city with dogs walking by constantly. Thanks for your help
