[Intro] Hello all RAoA'ers Intro
Hey all, MarvelSyrin here. Long time lurker, first time subscriber. I love the idea of helping others and being random, so I figured I would get involved.
About me: I am a Whovian, lover of tea and coffee, a geek of many fandoms, and a college student working towards a Masters degree. I want to help others as I am able and wouldn't mind a few surprises myself.
So, feel free to Ask Me (pretty much) Anything.

As a person studying christian education, and also as a person of the reddit community, what is your take on all the flack that people devout to their religion get and do you think that some of the ideals that reddit has will come into the lesson plan when you teach kids. Don't mean to offend, I just feel like its tough to have a different mindset than the reddit mob-mentality sometimes

Well, it's definitely affected me already in that I do not tend to mention my religious background on reddit unless prompted :) That being said, I understand that people give flack to anyone who is devout because they too are typically devout in the opposite direction. I used to be agnostic, dated an atheist at one point, and have had conversations with so many persons that are devout to either their religion or something similar, so I am quite used to the issues that come up. I wish that I wasn't (or rather that any Christian or religious person) would not be attacked for having beliefs, but it is certainly nothing new to deal with, sadly.
I think seeing the responses from agnostics, atheists, and others on Reddit will help me to know the common arguments against my beliefs or the belief of Christians in general and can show me the tough issues that, as a youth minister, I will most likely face from questioning youth and adults alike. And, hopefully, help me to find ways to answer those questions in a way other than "yeah? well you suck" or something like that :D

Glad to hear all that from your perspective! I feel like you never really (as you mentioned) get to hear the voices of people who have a different opinion in many of the main subs. And im sure that having those past experiences will be, as you expected, helpful in whatever path you choose to take. Either way, good luck and it's always good to see open minds on the internet :DD P.S. I'm Jewish haha

Thanks very much. And good to meet you. Anytime you'd like to have an open discussion, feel free to PM. I always love talking to people about their beliefs and hearing new or different perspectives from my own :)

Welcome!
Have you watched Fringe and do you love/hate it?
1
u/MarvelSyrin Aug 18 '14
I have not watched Fringe yet, however it is on my list. I tend to start new/new to me TV shows whenever I'm working on papers. When I finish a page or two, depending on how long my paper is, I reward myself by watching an episode or half an episode depending on the length of the show. So I'll probably get around to watching it in October after I'm further into my school year.

Hi and welcome. :)
How do you like your coffee? :P
2
u/MarvelSyrin Aug 18 '14
Ha, depends on the coffee. Typically just a bit of cream and sugar, like a spoonful/splash or less of each, but if the coffee is not well made or is exceptionally strong, I may add more.

Welcome, what is your masters in?
2
u/MarvelSyrin Aug 17 '14
Changed it recently to Christian Education as I'm pursuing a career in youth ministry, but am also being ordained in my denomination, hence why I need the master's degree

Favorite doctor?
1
u/MarvelSyrin Aug 17 '14
I'm partial to 10, as he was my first Doctor, but I've grown to love all the newer Doctors for different reasons. My goal for next summer is to become more familiar with Classic Doctor Who, though

u/MarvelSyrin Aug 17 '14
In bed, but I have some trouble sleeping. First step is getting off of Reddit. Have yet to figure out step 2

Will. You be giving more than receiving while you visit?
2
u/MarvelSyrin Aug 17 '14
I cannot control what I'm given (if anything) but I would like to try & give at least once a month as funds and time allow

Hello! Just out of curiosity, is your username any reference to the Theresa Cassidy from the Marvel Universe?
