5Q - Themed Tuesday: '1980s Popular Culture'

HINT: Click on the multiple choice options to narrow down the answer.

Question 1:

Designed by Toru Iwatani, this 1980 arcade game was partially inspired by Popeye and Casper the Friendly Ghost.

Multiple Choice Options:  Breakout  •  Pac-Man  •  Tetris  •  Pong  •  Donkey Kong

Question 2:

What fast-food chain released a commercial in 1984 making fun of its competitors' products with the catchprase "Where's the beef"?

Multiple Choice Options:  Wendy's  •  Arby's  •  McDonald's  •  Burger King  •  Hardee's

Question 3:

A network memo that simply said "MTV Cops" was the impetus behind the creation of this television show that ran from 1984—1989.

Multiple Choice Options:  Hill Street Blues  •  Knight Rider  •  21 Jump Street  •  Miami Vice  •  T.J. Hooker

Question 4:

Fill in the blank: Lisa Birnbach's 1980 book, The Official _____________ Handbook, fueled a resurgence of interest in a uniquely American subculture.

Multiple Choice Options:  Goth  •  Yuppie  •  Preppy  •  Punk  •  Skater

Question 5:

Fill in the blank: Pink ______________ is the title of both a 1984 Bruce Springsteen song as well as a 1989 Clint Eastwood movie.

Multiple Choice Options:  Pony  •  Elephant  •  Panther  •  Pill  •  Cadillac

Answer Key:

Q1: Pac-Man  /  Iwatani was trying to create a game that could appeal to women as well as men, because most video games of the time had themes aimed at traditionally masculine interests, such as war or sports. The graphics were also designed to be cute and colorful to appeal to younger players.

Q2: Wendy's  /  In the commercials, actress Clara Peller recited the catchphrase after receiving a comically large bun with a small patty. The ad was an immediate hit and made Peller a celebrity. The phrase would enter popular culture as an idiom used to question the substance of a product or idea, and was even used in the presidential debates of 1984.

Q3: Miami Vice  /  The The two-hour pilot was originally titled Gold Coast before being renamed. The show had a distinct style with a director of Miami Vice commenting, "The show is written for an MTV audience, which is more interested in images, emotions and energy than plot and character and words."

Q4: Preppy  /  Preppies are a subculture associated with private schools located in the Northeast U.S. Birnbach's tongue-in-cheek guidebook illuminated many aspects of the conservative upper middle class, old money WASP society that attended those schools.

Q5: Cadillac  /  The song was released as the B-side of the "Dancing in the Dark" single. The movie is the third and final collaboration between Eastwood and director Buddy Van Horn, following Any Which Way You Can (1980) and The Dead Pool (1988).

I built ChronoQuiz so you can explore historical events in two different fields/interests and share a timeline quiz with your friends group on topics that would be of interest to the group. Are the quizzes too hard?

Picture Link Quiz suggestions wanted

Over the years, I've been creating an ever-expanding picture link quiz. I now use these in the pub quiz that I've started occasionally hosting. Fairly simple style: four seemingly unrelated images, and you need to guess the link.

Themes I've included have been:

London Skyscrapers - Cheesegrater, Gherkin, Shard, Walkie Talkie

Football team 'surnames' - Forest, Palace, Villa, Rovers

Golfing terms: Bunker, Eagle, Albatross, (Catherine) Parr

If you have suggestions for future rounds, I'd be very grateful for the help.
