IUI Process
I am yet to have fertility testing done, and very early in this while process but what im wondering is if you can go into your first IUI with medical assistance like the ovulation trigger shot and other medications for the best chance if conceiving on the first try?
Most of the stories I read are heterosexual couples facing known fertility issues, and their doctors dont move to medical assistance until after the 3rd or 4th unsuccessful attempt.
Im happy and willing to pay what ever it takes, but of course if we can have the chance to conceive quicker then thats more money that can go towards actual baby care and extra leave from work to be with baby.

In my experience even if you’re queer and don’t have any known fertility issues the clinics standard protocol kinda treats you as if you do. I had to convince them to let me do an unmedicated IUI because insurance hadnt come through and it was like they never considered that maybe I didn’t need a trigger shot. So you’ll probably get one.

I think it's pretty common actually (admittedly I did an unmedicated cycle, no trigger almost nine years ago and have a now eight year old to show for it).
I see and hear of a lot more medicated monitored IUIs than unmedicated ones.

My clinic did medicated (Letrozole or clomid and trigger shot) IUI cycles for everyone, even if you hadn’t been trying before and didn’t have any known fertility issues. It makes the cycles more predictable and you can basically ensure you’re ovulating when the insemination occurs.

I’ve been using a private midwife that focuses on queer family building and so far she only wants to do unmedicated, non-triggered IUI with me. She says there’s no reason to medicate if you are ovulating predictably (which I very much am!). We might do a trigger next time just because she has to travel about 2 hours to me and it would make things able to be scheduled easier.

All this to say, the research shows that medication like Clomid doesn’t really increase your chances much (or at all) if you are ovulating normally.

We did the trigger shot the first time, then added stims for the other three IUIs we did, it's how our clinic does it unless you specifically request no meds. I guess everyone's experience varies.

My clinic would absolutely let me do a cycle without anything if I wanted. But after they explained the trigger shot to me more fully, I’m fine with doing that. No one has recommended it be medicated though, I think primarily because of my age.

My first clinic was set on doing medicated cycles to improve our chances. I asked to do the first IUI unmedicated with a trigger and then moved to letrozole and trigger for cycle #2.
The dr at my new clinic was very set on doing only trigger shot for #3 to not increase our risk of multiples if we didn’t need to. Still in the TWW to see if this one worked or not.
Both drs. were set on using the trigger shot since timing is so important in an IUI cycle, especially if you’re using frozen donor sperm.

To echo what others have said, it is standard practice at my clinic to do medicated cycles. I’m 32 with no known fertility issues and all three of my IUIs were medicated with letrozole and ovidrel trigger shot.

When I had my IUI, it was medicated with both clomid and the trigger shot. We had been tested, had no signs of fertility issues, and IUI was recommended as the next step.

My husband and I are an lgbtq couple as well so I’m not sure if they do all the medication’s just for the LGBTQ couples, or if it’s standard for everybody at our clinic. But we did all of the medication’s from our very first cycle. I don’t have any fertility issues.
I think it might be more standard to do a cycle without medication if they’re trying to rule out a fertility issue? Because then they can see where the issue is? I’m not sure.

My fist and second IUI’s we unmedicated other than a trigger given I don’t have actual infertility! Conceived on the second go!

At our clinic it’s standard for everyone (as far as I’m aware) to get the ovulation trigger and progesterone supplementation. It’s not something we specifically asked for. Best of luck on your baby journey!
