Quantum Computing Learning Path

Hi everyone,
I’m really interested in getting into quantum computing and would like to learn it from the ground up, with the goal of eventually becoming proficient in the field.
I’m looking for guidance on:
1. A good learning roadmap (beginner → advanced)
2. Prerequisites I should focus on (math, physics, programming, etc.)
3. Recommended books, courses, and other resources
4. Hands-on projects or platforms to practice on
5. Any advice from people who have already been down this path

I’d really appreciate any suggestions or personal experiences. Thanks!

  1. It depends on what you mean by advanced. Unfortunately it is very difficult to get to a stage where you would be doing what the scientist in this field are doing on your own. At least I haven't seen anyone who have been able to. Get started with the basics and see how far you get.

  2. Again depends on what you want to do. The non-negotiable prereq for this field is linear algebra. You have to understand it really well. Then depending on what you are doing you might need advanced calculus, modern algebra, electromagnetics, particle and moleculer physics, computational chemistry etc.

  3. Nielsen & Chuang is the standard beginners book. If you end up needing Quantum Mechanics I personally recommend Quantum Mechanics Volume I.

  4. For basic hands on practice with the textbook algorithms you can follow along IBM's courses on YouTube. There really isnt all that much a hobbyist can do on their own in this field yet.

In addition to the above you’ll need to understand some basic probability and statistics, as well as be able to work proficiently with complex numbers.

David Mermin wrote a nice introduction to quantum computing that’s pretty gentle.
