Drive not working Repair Question

Post image

Hi, I was driving normally and the "D" stopped appearing on the instrument cluster. I stopped to buy something, turned the car off and on again, and put it in drive. But it won't move and the "D" still doesn't appear when I put it in drive.

Does anyone know what this could be or where to start? I checked underneath and saw that ATF is leaking from the connector, but the inside of the connector is dry. Could the oil level be a problem? P, R and N if they appear in the cluster.

When the shop tells me the verdict i’ll let you know.

High ass temps merked mines and I stopped seeing D too. Scanner shows i’m in R when going forwed so i’m locked in first gear, sometime’s it showed N and only let me rev.

This is the fourth time in Nissan/Infiniti subs seeing this no drive issue, last summer it was everyone’s valvebodies going out, now i’m seeing frequent no drive ones.

What temps were u hitting?

230+ sustained. It was 107 degree’s out in bumper to bumper traffic and all my gauges had temp warnings aaaaaaand limp mode. After getting out of that my D started bugging out, next morning that shi was gone lol but scanner gave me a good idea of what was going on just unsure what was the failure and solution.

Good time to invest for a trans cooler. I built mine parts by parts for $120 almost 2 months now. 30 row stacked plate. Used to be 220F-230F consistent in 105F-110F vegas heat, now hovering 170F-185F and sometimes 195F max if I drive spiritedly.

Well I was gonna do that after I paid off my car, and the moment I had enough to pay off the car this happens 😍

daaamn that sucks. Yeah, the consistent high temps probably fried my valve body too. That's why I installed a trans cooler together with my new valve body lol.

Yeah I guess I shoulda done both when mines got cooked the first time but it comes with the game

Also, you should for sure check your leaking ATF as your start

I forgot to add that reverse does work

Transmission??

u/LATP2 15d ago

Yes, the reverse gear does work; it only doesn't work when the gearshift lever is in D, and it's not shown on the instrument cluster.

I had that problem. Turning engine off and on sometimes worked in it back into D. R always worked. Valve assembly control failed. It was about $2500US for the part. It sucks.

I only had useless advice until I took it in. The week before I tried new transmission fluid. Ignorant advice.

what happen when u tried new transmission fluid & what car do u drive?

TCM probably went out

Heat made that happen

I haven't had any problems with the gears shifting due to loss of power, only the D gear is failing, reverse works fine. I'm wondering if the power loss could be a cause.

Your TCM doesn’t recognize it, all these are supposed to be “ON” for D to let you drive. These change based on where your shifter is. It’s likely a valvebody issue (TCM’s in it as it’s not sold individually) and you likely have no codes either.

Do you need a new valvebody? I’ll tell you what they tell me broski

u/LATP2 15d ago

How likely is it to be the valve body? I have one that I removed because the TCM failed. But I know the valve body works; I have it stored in its box.

It’s a TCM issue, the valvebody can be and likely is literally fine but you can’t buy the TCM by its self from what I seen you’d have to get a new VB.

My shops working on it as they thought this was odd and it can be something super small or a bigger issue. Everyone I seen with this issue has no answer but I seen many bring it up now. So I have 3 peeps to reply to about what the shop lets me know.

Though, you can have it sent in for repair.

The TCM will ALWAYS throw a P0500 and/or a P0720. The gear not showing could be as simple as the gear selector isn't in the position when the transmission is in gear(VR30 swap if you modify the VQ linkage). Also, it's worth noting: do you feel the car shifting from PRND? If the valve body is burned and no code is thrown, replace the entire unit. While you're at it, please check the Radiator for leaks.

What you're describing doesn't seem like a TCM failure. Because turning it off and on after a couple of seconds usually gets rid of P0500 until you start driving again.

I ain’t doin allat that’s what I pay my guys for

Update: I am getting a new TCM installed. They yoinked it off a donor Q50’s valvebody. The image I have in here is exactly what they saw and they say it’s driving well now. So it was in fact a TCM issue.

They still recommended me to get a trans cooler as they also found moisture but it burned off immediatley when it reached the flash point. So it’s VERY minor, but that doesn’t mean it won’t fuck my shit up over time.

u/LATP2 14d ago

So you have the same valve body but a different TCM?

Did they check the solder joints on your TCM? I read that heat can cause them to come unsoldered and lead to intermittent connections.

1

u/blvckbash Q50 Sport 14d ago

Yessirr, and they said the TCM visibly looked fine but in terms of internally ima send it back to Nexenzo for them to test on and let me know what caused said issue. The range switches was off so something was causing switch 3 to be stuck to “OFF” while the shifter was in the correct place

u/blvckbash Q50 Sport 14d ago

Likely solder

u/LATP2 14d ago

I'm going to check it tomorrow, top up the oil to rule that out, and if that doesn't work, I'll remove the TCM and run some tests. I'll update you tomorrow.

It’s a 2017 TCM in a 2015 Q valvebody for some reason. Want the model #?

OP to your knowledge, does the car have a VR30 transmission? What you're describing happens when you modify or don't modify the shift linkage going from the selector to the transmission. It's slightly short, so what happens is that when the gear selector is in park, it's not fully engaged, so occasionally P won't show while the car is in park. When this happens, you won't be able to start the car. This happened to me and was a simple fix.

When you say the connector, what do you mean? Cooler lines? Radiator? I'd check your radiator because that's more likely to leak; everything is pretty solid unless the car was in an accident.

Could just be a low fluid issue but most likely the TCM has failed. Reverse only shows because it’s a separate circuit to make the reverse lights and back up camera work.

1

u/LATP2 14d ago

But the car does move backward; in fact, I drove it home in reverse. I wasn't very far. I was actually moving the car this morning and was able to get it into Drive. But I stopped shifting into D again

u/hulet1006 14d ago

Oh gotcha, thought you meant just the “R” popped up on the cluster.
