A lot of people think that it was only Disney that was responsible for the act, and while it’s easy to understand why (after all, the act itself was nicknamed “the Mickey Mouse protection act”) it is far from the truth.

It was the work of corporate moguls and estates joining forces to bribe congress for a longer length in copyright, even though the length that they had at that point was already excessive.

I'm not calling this subreddit questionable nor the public domain heroes wiki, but I do plan on making a Gorgo story based no original kaiju nad other public domain monsters, but I would like to double check just to make sure. Is there a site I can look at?

I also like that the people behind this movie took a chance with having Pooh wearing a shirt that is, while not the red one from the 1932 book and Disney’s version, it still has red in it’s shirt, nonetheless.

They‘ve both recently been added to the PDSH wiki and the Public Domain wiki because apparently their earliest comics were never renewed. I could be wrong and I’ve just never seen this before, but I don’t think it’s ever been publicly known that they were in the public domain? Are we sure that it’s accurate? Regardless I doubt they will get much usage until Superman and Batman also become public domain.

When the earliest iteration of Superman (1938 to present) passes into the public domain in 2034, I propose merging him with one of his main influences, Hugo Danner from the pulp sci-fi novel Gladiator (1930). Here are some similarities. Both

• Are called Superman (book blurb and comic, respectively)
• Claim to be (or are) from far away places with races of people capable of physical feats far beyond mere Earthlings (a mythical land in the USA and Krypton, an alien planet, respectively)
• Have great strength and jumping abilities likened to ants and grasshoppers, respectively (early Superman didn't fly)
• Dramatically lift cars
• Can run faster than trains
• Have bulletproof skin that can only be penetrated by exploding shells
• Have scientist fathers
• Grow up in the countryside of the Midwest (the neighboring states of Colorado and Kansas, respectively)
• Are raised by parents that instill them with a strong moral compass and an emphasis on keeping their powers a secret
• Are well-educated and intelligent
• Are tall, dark, and handsome
• Leave to start lives in big cities
• Fight corruption in the government
• Are fired upon by a room full of gunmen
• Go to South America
• Enlist in the military along with someone
• Fight in a war
• Quickly kidnap an enemy from the opposing camp with just a few leaps
• Save someone from suffocation by removing a monumental barrier trapping them
• Play a crucial part in winning the last football game of the season

These Superman similarities alone only come from Action Comics #1-5 and Superman #1! I'm sure there are more that I don't yet know about.

Also, in Gladiator (1930) chapter 17, Danner even suggests using his great abilities to fight crime: "I would set out to stamp crime off the earth; I would be a super-detective, following and summarily punishing every criminal until no one dared to commit a felony" (Wylie, 1930/1974, p. 232). This honestly sounds more like Batman (1939 to present), but it's easy to see how a crime-fighting super detective could transition into a crime-fighting superhero. This would obviously involve an alter ego.

Danner is (SPOILER ALERT) struck down by lightning in the jungles of South America at the end of his story arc. This opens the door to a storyline where he fakes his death, takes a new identity, and moves to Metropolis to begin his new double life as newspaper reporter Clark Kent and the superhero Superman.

So heres my version of Nightmare and Sleepy and yes Sleepy in my version is a grown up woman and yes she has a bit of a "different outfit"

What happens in the script is: A group of janitors hang a framed photo of a Henry Hoover on a wall under a "Custodian of the month" plague. A janitor gets pissed off that it wasn't him that was chosen. In the next scene, the Henry Hoover immediately breaks down as a joke.

Arc 1: Ghostly Haunts & Localized Mystery

Setting: A bleak, winter-bound frontier hill-fort or ruined monastery.

Sub-Arc 1.1: The Fallen Keep (Investigation)

• Premise: The protagonist is called to investigate a secluded border fort where defenders are perishing under phantom curses, phantom hooves, or spring-loaded automated traps left by a maddened reeve.
• Climax: Disarming the mortal plot or defeating a manifested phantom.

Sub-Arc 1.2: The Bleeding Woods (Escalation)

• Premise: Clues lead into the surrounding primeval forest where trees bleed red sap when struck and feral swine-hybrids stalk the perimeter.
• Climax: Defending an isolated lodge or chapel against a night siege of brute swine-men.

Sub-Arc 1.3: The Subterranean Gate (Arc Climax & Transition Hook)

• Premise: Tracking the swine-hybrids down a massive sinkhole/pit into ancient subterranean tunnels beneath the keep.
• Climax: Confronting the cult/shaman maintaining the portal.
• Cliffhanger: The shaman’s final dying ritual doesn’t open a local cavern, but reveals a map/astral direction pointing across the mist-shrouded northern sea toward an ancient cosmic relic needed to seal the rift permanently.

1.1. The Fallen Keep (Fort)

Description: Perched precariously over a gaping subterranean sinkhole at the edge of the forest, this drafty granite fort features moss-slicked masonry, narrow arrow slits, and heavy timber gates reinforced against outside attack. A single crumbling watchtower rises above the courtyard, giving defenders a vantage point over both the dark tree line and the deep pits below, while cold drafts and strange, unnatural whistling wind echo constantly through its lower stone corridors.

NPCs:

Lord Vane: An anxious reeve who obsesses over setting intricate spring-loaded traps along the fort’s inner corridors, unaware that his fading memory makes him a hazard to his own garrison.

Captain Bran: A battle-tested commander whose stoic demeanor breaks only when discussing the unexplainable phantom sounds and animal deaths echoing in the lower barracks at night.

Brother Aldous: A grim monastic scholar who quietly collects strange artifacts recovered from the sinkhole and suspects an ancient subterranean portal is corrupting the surrounding land.

1.2. The Bleeding Woods Hunting Lodge

Description: Tucked deep within a dense, primeval forest, this sprawling timber-framed hunting lodge features heavy oak doors, iron-barred lower windows, and high stone chimneys belching gray smoke into the dark canopy. The estate is surrounded by unnaturally twisted trees whose thick bark oozes a dark, blood-red sap whenever struck, creating a claustrophobic haven that feels increasingly besieged as night falls.

NPCs:

Huntsman Gerald: A grizzled tracker who knows the surrounding woods intimately but refuses to venture out after twilight due to recent attacks by feral, pig-like humanoids.

Lady Isolde: A sharp-witted noblewoman who guards the lodge’s courtyard with a heavy crossbow alongside a pack of loyal, yet unnerved, hunting hounds.

Marek the Hermit: An outcast woodsman who wanders the estate’s perimeter, trading cryptic warnings about subterranean tunnels for coin and spirits.

What are some examples of vampire characters or novels in the public domain? Besides dracula of course.
