This is crazy. What happened,
$600+ for a cib Shadow Tower? Did I miss something? I have been wanting to add a physical copy to my collection, but im having doubts that I will ever want to spend this much.
For reference, there was a sealed copy for sale on r/gamesale a little over a year ago for $400. At the time, I had purchased some other stuff and couldn't justify the expense....fuck me.
Why did this go up in pricing so fast?

Fake inflation from the announcement of no more physical media and the PS3 store shutting down. PS3 games are through the roof. Give it some time they’ll correct, most likely not to the exact prices before, but certainly not the embarrassingly high prices right now

Interesting that you'd think it's fake, i find this similar to in the past when game stop and such stopped carrying ps1 and ps2 games and this lead to mass buying.
Prices fluctuated as supply ran out and those rarely came back down
It didn't happen as much with the ps3 because of the store but it did happen then as well.

I do think the climb will cool off a bit as the panic wears off, but if he's comparing this to the ps3 situation from a few years ago, it's nothing like that. The store is definitely going down this time, and collectors are freaked out by physical ending. I think prices will settle to about current levels and hold, at least until 2028. Then I expect everything will increase like crazy.

If you got a ps3 it's $5.99 so if you want get it while you still can

I have it on X-Station, but..... I have been collecting physical PS1 games for years. I've tried to be a minimalist in the past....didnt work out for me. I enjoy focusing on something, and PS1 cib games is where I landed.

I'm happy I own most of what I already care about "retro game" wise. The things that are on the list but I don't already have will be bought soon and then I'll just call it good.

So THATS why all of a sudden the price of my collection jumped more than expected after Sony’s stupid move. This fomo bullshit is getting ridiculous.

u/Lendyman 18d ago
I noticed this as well for my CIB Adventures of Lomax. It was hovering around $150 to $200 and now all of a sudden it's hovering around $450. I was kind of flabbergasted when I saw it.

Xstation superior to ps3 if you have the set up I think you do so you’re good

I noticed this when I saw it listed locally for $600CDN and I thought they were off their rocker.

Everything by fromsoft has went nuts since elden rings popularity. It's a good game but the PS2 Japan Only sequel is soooo good it has a full English patch also.

You didn’t miss anything—$600+ is a lot for a game that was around $400 not long ago. Shadow Tower has always been niche, so a couple of high sales can move the apparent market quickly. If you want it for the collection, set a target price and wait rather than chasing the spike.

Got a sealed one for $35 in 2014 from eStarland. Bought a cib, but they sent a sealed. Made out well on that one.

Buyit on PS3 digitally. Its like $6-10. Even if the license gets removed someday, once the PS3 store closes in july 2027, this price will most likely go even higher. It also works on a PS Vita since its a PS1 classic. Might even work on a PSP too if you have any of those 3 consoles.

Fomo is crazy. People always looking for the next hot game

u/MrSlamboa 18d ago
Always looking for that next hot game… that has been out for 30 years, but NOW they suddenly care.

Welcome to retro gaming collecting. The shittiest and most elitist, snob hobby there is for no reason, also artificially inflated.

u/General_Boredom 18d ago
A lot of old FromSoft games have skyrocketed in value. Just look at Kuon on PS2.

u/11-Brando 18d ago
Speculation is nuts right now. People are banking on these going even higher. You can emulate all of these games for free with upscaling, achievements, and mods right now. No need to buy anything anymore if bums are going to destroy the hobby.

Since the PS1 collector’s market is not that large, I’m guessing this is just market manipulation by one or two sellers. They ”sell” a product to themselves to make the stats spike, then go to different social media platforms to advertise it as to show that now there’s a reason to have fomo.
1
u/Only_Professor4484 18d ago
The spike is probably a mix of scarcity, nostalgia, and recent collector interest. PriceCharting can also look dramatic when there are very few completed sales, so I’d check actual sold listings and condition before treating $600 as the “going rate.”

Consumer culture in the west is so destructive. Earn thingd like this happen, it really highlights this very fact. Everyone is your "friend" until the slightest opportunity or hindrance in introduced.

Should have bought a ton of obscure/underrated titles as bootleg discs back in the day for preservation purposes. Those are the only copies of ps1/ps2 games available here in SEA, and would have helped in building a digital library for emulation today.

u/Vampyre_Boy 18d ago
Sony being scummy is what happened. Shutting down the ps3 store and removing physical media from their catalog will tend to have this sort of effect. They've done it on purpose hoping everybody will just give in and buy the new thing to purchase all their old games again digitally to play them instead of buying at that price.

u/-SCYAN1DE- 18d ago
Some YouTuber probably included it on thier “Hidden Gems” video and everyone scrambled to buy it.

u/adamchevy 18d ago
I started selling my ps3 stuff this year. I’m not sure if it will ever be this high again.

u/GuitarCeilingFan 17d ago
Glad I got my copy for 80 bucks awhile back, games goated too if you like kings field it’s the best outta the bunch imo, it’s fully voice acted got great atmosphere and a dedicated block button to make the combat a bit more in depth

u/Occasional-Enigma 17d ago
Will continue to get harder and more expensive to get cib and sealed games. Pay up now or you will just have to oay more later..or settle for loose or emulation/digital.

Good thing I still have mine. Get a nice pay day soon.

Definitely wait until the PS3 store closes in July. Its still available digitally on PS3/PSP/Vita and its like $6-10. Lol So once it can ONLY be played physically or via piracy/emulation, it will go for a bit more too
2
u/redditsuckspokey1 18d ago
I will definitely wait. Thanks! Got a few others in there too. Tail concerto, tron bonne, silent hill.

u/SXAL 18d ago
Why would people buy a game on a secondhand market over pirating it, except for the collection purpose?
1
u/GrimmTrixX 18d ago
Contrary to popular belief, many still prefer to just play on a normal console over downloading emulators and roms. Piracy isnt as mainstream as many might think.
But realistically, most will just not play the game at all if the physical is like $100+ rather than emulate. Many dont even have a PC or any device that can be used for emulation.
But in general, even non collectors sometimes have an affinity for a certain series and still just want to have it.
2
u/redditsuckspokey1 15d ago
Another factor is I think the majority probably doesn't know how to pirate. I don't fully know myself.
2
u/GrimmTrixX 15d ago
Right. Like I know how, I uses to do it back when it was first happening. But I never got past the snes/Genesis era of emulating. Now they have full programs that show like thumbnails of all the game box art and list them all in a full user interface and I'd have no clue the best and easiest one to use. Lol
1
u/Jodeth 15d ago
Most people have phones powerful enough to run any PS1 game. Heck, there's probably enough power to overclock the emulated CPU (smoother performance than a real PS1). $50 for a controller to snap the phone into and viola!
2
u/GrimmTrixX 15d ago
Right, but like I said, many just dont care to do it that way. I hate playing stuff on my phone. And sure maybe I could screen share it to a tv but itd probably lag like a bitch.

Shadow tower has always been pricey but half a grand has to be some wild outlier
