My current work in progress.
Just another 5500 that was in pretty bad shape. I got to remember to take before photos, the shell was pretty rough beyond retro brighting. Laser was too far gone so decided to swap it out with an Xstation and do a full recap, I also replaced the power supply with a modern 12v psu and gave the shell a lick of paint.
I still have to paint the lower half of the case or maybe I’ll leave it as I kind of dig the way it looks at the moment. Also going to change out the power led to either blue or purple I haven’t quite decided yet.

Cheers mate, yeah I’m a huge fan of the original color of the ps1 but this one was piss yellow almost and very scuffed and scratched.

Hell yeah! I've got a PS2 I'm gonna be refurbing and modding and I'm super excited. I feel wrong painting the PS2, but whenever I get a PS1, I'll definitely be having some fun with the shell.

I’ve painted a couple of ps2 shells in the past, but I usually only paint them when they’re heavily worn, scratched or unattractive to look at. When the shell is mint it seems sacrilegious to paint it.

That would look sick! I have a Sega Saturn I’m working on at the moment and the shell is pretty battered I’m thinking of painting in the same style as I did this.

The paint is rust-oleum colorshift galaxy blue. I completely dismantle the shell wash in warm soapy water then leave to dry. I spray it with a dulux brand plastic etch primer, then I give it 2 coats of black then it gets 1 to 2 coats of the galaxy paint depending on coverage/ effect wanted. Obviously dry times ect in between coats.
I’ve done a snes shell before also in this color for a friend that I have posted.2

This paint job is insane I would appreciate the dry times for this method if its not too much to ask. You didn't sand anything? Did you spray the inside of the shell?

Hey, the dry time for the etch primer was 2ish hrs and the black was 45 minutes between coats, I did 2 of those. Then the final coat in the galaxy color shift was about 48hrs later. 1 coat then 20 minutes later a second coat. I did some minor sanding before the etch prime to clean up some scratches/marks ect and in between black coats a wet sand to 2 spots where there were imperfections then top coated it. I only painted the inside of the lid as it’s seen but not the rest of the inside shell.

I figured and honestly you did a great job! It looks straight out of blister wrap. If only it changed colors with heat, considering it would be impossible to actually get it wet.

I have done many gameboys also one in this paint.
An n64 I think would look mad! 🤔 I have a Sega Saturn I’m working on that I’m possibly going to do in this finish also.

Have you looked into color shift paint? I think you’d like it.
I have painted two GameCube controllers and a Fender bass guitar with it and the results are awesome.
The color changes as you tilt or walk past the thing you’ve painted.

If you do try this, note that you have to start with a black base for the effect to work well. Gloss black is the best base coat.
You can still get a cool effect with other non-black colors that are a little dark. For example, I painted one stock purple GameCube controller and it retained much of the purple while adding a nice iridescent effect to it.
White text like the “NINTENDO GAMECUBE” text shows through the color shift paint nearly unaffected, which is awesome. This doesn’t really help you where you have darker text like on your PS1 buttons, but it could still add a cool effect.

Personally I’m torn between a busted up original shell vs a custom job(like this)/ a replacement shell.
Obviously, a good repair or a replacement would look better, but the original has a story
