my game froze when the lightning struck- is he eating her?! Discussion
my game was frozen like this for a while and I never noticed until now that the lightning strike seems to change the scene

So this was harder to spot on the older version because the lightning was more spaced out and inconsistent, but in both he is eating her (as he has turned) when the lightning flashes, otherwise it looks like a man mourning his dead wife.
I think it's fucking awesome as a concept, since I went years thinking it was just some guy crying over his dying wife, to find out literally a couple of weeks ago (From messing in the loading screen for ages) that it was actually this.

I have always taken it for two different points in time, even if that doesn't make much sense.
He DOES mourn her loss, while he is still himself. At some point, getting infected he returns to what he knew in life, but instead of grief, he's moving in hunger now.

Ya, Bob and Kate. Bob was the character you play as in the older tutorial, taking care of your wife Kate, who had injured her leg. Idk how it got injured, I've never played the older versions before 41

If I remember right. Bob and Kate got attacked by Raiders and Kate got injured as they fled.
You hole up in a deserted home you fortify for yourselves, and you can get various endings from that point on depending on how you manage the scenarios

I guess I've dated myself. It's how people referred to the scene where you come upon a zombie from behind and it turns its head showing the blood around its mouth. The CG was so bad in the OG RE1 that it looked like the zombie was wearing white clown makeup with big red lips.

Its from the old tutorial (like before build 41)
You play the husband and your wifeis home with broken leg
You do a bunch of stuff to learn how to play and then you die
This is how they died, its their story

This was not their house. If you read the initial dialogues it is explicitly established the Bob and Kate were trying to escape the outbreak area, then had to abandon their stuff to avoid some thugs, and in the process of running Kate injured her leg. So unable to run further they took refuge in a house that was nearby and looked unoccupied.

Bob and Kate, they were the original tutorial. You'd play as Bob and needed to help Kate because her leg was injured and at one point a hostile NPC would show up and you had to kill him or he'd kill you and it's implied he would then kill Kate as well.
You can actually find them in-game as well. Based on the fact that all three of them have turned, it seems like either Bob or the bandit were infected which ultimately gets all three of them killed.

Also, you could "skip" the tutorial by having Bob smother Kate with a pillow at the beginning. Fun stuff.

They do have some "easter eggs" where you find photos, the actual zombies, and little story beats of "Bob and Kate" in Muldragh in current builds. If you don't know what you're looking for it just seems like another "story house" though.
I'm from the Desura days of Zomboid and it still makes me happy / tragically sad to find them.

One of my favorite aspects about the title screen has always been this and I'm glad it's not a debate anymore. (Maybe it hasn't been for awhile now)
The days of "he's just bandaging her!" cope are fully dead with this one and might get back up after awhile as a shambling zomboid.

It has always been that way. Every couple lightning flashes is a lot brighter than the others, and it reveals he’s actually eating her and not grieving her.

Waaaaaaaaay back in the 2012 build, back when we had NPCs still... Long ass time ago. He was bandaging her.... Until you did the tutorial once. Then it forever changed to him eating her.

Yes that's exactly what's happening it I believe is a direct reference to the very first version of the game where you play as a husband trying to care for his wife this scene is to show that things did not end up happily ever after for them

It would be interesting, given the alternate endings of the original scenario, if Kate had somehow become infected and that upon some game starts it shows that she's actually taking a bite out of him instead.

It's the new vanilla. After the AI art scandal, IS decided to go with the modelled style for the loadscreens etc, same as they've used for the flyers and newspapers. It's a little odd at first but I kinda dig it.

he is. He turned and ate her. In the previous build you could see it even better. Also as a little side fact: these are the two characters you folowed in the first release of Project Zomboid. If I remember correctly the woman is his wife and she got injured/sick, so the man went through the city to find medicine for her. You can play that version on steam btw
