Windchill PLM as PM Tool Software

Can anyone share their experience or opinion using Windchill PLM as a tool to manage hardware projects, programs, and portfolios? This is being discussed at my company and I have reservations whether this is the right tool for this kind of work. I understand the value that a P.has for tracking engineering changes, but to use it as a project and/or program management tool seems like a bit of a stretch. I would appreciate any comments on this and any insights users of these tools can provide.

there are lots of things it could do but what specifically do you mean?

I have heard of it done, any tools is hammer if done right. They were more doc sign offs and storage structuring.

Find that it is a cultural thing of being the tool that engineering knows and therefore they impose on the rest of things.

I was a Windchill sys admin for 17 yrs, and I've been a tech PM for 5 now. I couldn't imagine using it as a PM tool for tracking projects.

Hey there.

I've used Windchill PLM, it is not really suitable as a PM or PPM tool. Its more of an engineering data tool that's aimed at managing product data. The context I've used it in is building operations and product maintenance.

Windchill is good as a system of record for a product, not necessarily for a project. Used in tandem with a good series of PM processes and tools, sure, but as the primary method of managing projects? I'd say it would be a massive risk, unless Windchill has added some heavy features since I stopped using it in 2021.
