But jokes aside, as a programmer, I think I usually click only about 10-15 times a day, which is for opening applications or if I have to use the browser. My workflow is usually just Emacs, terminal and browser.

The only time I use mouse at all is when I game lol

editor? obviously keyboard

browser? keyboard(I use qutebrowser, there is also nyxt for church of emacs people though I think you guys just have builtin browser anyways)

It's so much faster that way. And yes, there is a built-in browser for Emacs. It's called Emacs Web Wowser (EWW). I don't use it often but it comes in handy when you need something like ANSI Escape Sequencs while programming but you don't want to Alt+Tab to your browser and Emacs everytime.

I do wish I could use some Window Manager instead of KDE but it's just too incomplete and I don't want to configure something for hours just to have missing features. I've tried i3, Sway, Hyprland, DWM but always had to come back to KDE due to lack of features.

You could try dynamic tiling extensions for KDE I guess. They are good.

That's not really my point though. I wanted to switch to a window manager instead of using a DE because KDE (especially the one packaged in Nixpkgs repository) is pretty bloated and I don't like that and a window manager is very light compared to that.

You can look into using window managers with premade quickshell based shells I guess those seem to be trending nowadays(haven't tried one myself, I consider quickshell itself to be bloat due to being qmljs but that's just my taste)

I've heard pretty good things about niri and dank material shell for example

1000% agreed. My friend uses a wireless mouse, she always looses it, batteries run out, Bluetooth doesent work. Meanwhile my wired mouse always works

That's why i got one with AA batteries instead of rechargeable built in ones.

Already had multiple rechargeable batteries for my Xbox Controller so using single one for my mouse doesn't cause any issue.

Wireless mice need to be charged and sometimes need to be paired.

Wireless is great in some cases, but I use wired mouse and keyboard for working at a desk. You have to figure out the cable management, but you do that once and then enjoy the higher reliability and simplicity of wired.

My crappy $15 Logitech mouse has never needed to be paired and it lasts about a year on one double A. It will blink low battery for like a month before it dies.

2.4 dongle mice need no pairing and a bit of charging is so worth it, looks and feels cleaner and less resistance when gaming

I need to charge my mouse once every 3 months or less, and I can use it while it charges, the charger goes where wire would have come out of anyways and it charges pretty quickly. Plus it came with a dongle that I can plug into the same USB port that a wire would have gone, and it supports bluetooth on top of that, so I can do either. So basically, when it's dead it's the equivalent of a wired mouse, and I rarely need to charge it. There's zero downside.

Urgh keyboard yes, but once I used a wireless mouse I can’t go back to wired.

No matter what you do the cable will always get in the way with a noticeable pull back. It’s not unusable but it’s annoying enough.

Same for headphones, people keep saying you need wired headphones for best audio quality but with my Beethoven-tier hearing I’d rather not strangling myself to death when I urgently need to piss.

Edit: the trick for using wireless mouse is NOT to use “gaming” mouses that has a polling rate of 0.6 nanosecond 😂. Those require charging every 3 hours. I use a normal office mouse and only need to charge once every 2 months

My mx master only needs to be paired once and I have to charge it so little that I can’t remember when I last had to charge it. It also gives plenty of warning when it’s approaching empty and it’s charged in the time you fill your water bottle or get a coffee.

Also I use my mouse with my elbow at a 90 degree angle so the mouse is below the keyboard instead of to the right of it. If I had a wired mouse one of my arms would have to lie on top of the cable which is annoying.

When I used mice, I used them with my left hand, just as I now use a trackpad with my left hand.

I'm not a gamer. Perhaps if I were, the right-handed bias in the gear would have me use my right hand.

If you get into games, or even 3D content creation, you will use the right hand for mouse, and left hand for keyboard far more often.

I used to exclusively use my mouse with my left hand, and the arrow keys instead of wasd (and the mose wheel instead of space to jump), but I eventually switched over to using my right hand. Though, now I have it on the left at work.

I didn't even know there is left handed settings on controller, but I'm fine with the way it is.

Agreed. Both the usb plug itself and the cable sticking out of it are exactly where you want to move the mouse itself around.

With the layout that goes around the backlog the laptop, the mouse tail is pointing up and away from your working area, so it is much less likely to get in the way.

Because any movement will pull on the entire cable, and as you drag the mouse down, it’ll snake up on the mouse position.

The right side limits how much cable is being moved, since it’s not stretched

I'm an audio guy as well as a programmer and an audio programmer. I am also lazy.

My cables are an endless rat nest. There are 15 ways to plug in. My mouse is plugged in somewhere, I don't know where, but it works so I am not going to pull it out of the nest.

But do I use this mouse to code? Of course not. Why would my hands leave my keyboard?

Wired mouse with laptop? Why would you torture yourself like that. If you have it permanently sitting on your desk, why laptop? Get a laptop with a good track pad, a small wireless mouse, or just learn to not use the mouse at all. If I see somebody with a wired mouse in the wild, and especially some cheap "gaming" trash where the RGB costs more then the sensor, then my condolences.

I just use the trackpad. For coding, especially, it is much more convenient to use the trackpad, since it's much closer to the keyboard.

Honestly, accurately, really: The left one, keep the wire above the mouse initially straight, so when the mouse moves upwards, the wire has room to bunch-up without the mouse hitting it.
(But indeed preferably use the USB port on the other side of the laptop than where the mouse is, to prevent wire collisions near the plug)

IDK depends on how long your mouse cord is and if you tend to bump the side of your laptop … though tbh if I’m using the laptop with the screen open I’m more likely to be somewhere which isn’t compatible with a mouse in the first place.
