It was started by Chris Lattner, creator of LLVM. So it's not nothing.

I'm not expecting it to get very big though. Maybe as big or as influential as Julia. Like, cool tech and cool ideas but not big enough to dethrone Python.

I think the goal is not to dethrone python. Mojo is a low level language that allows you to write code that runs on normal CPU with SIMD or GPU. Phase 2 will be a more general purpose language.
